QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:44 AM) In the city, I see no benefit to having a big SUV. My gf has a toyota yaris, I'm always amazed at the spaces we can fit ourselves into. Yeah, I have a little Audi TT that I love for the same reasons...still agonizing whether I can justify keeping it as my daily driver when I get my dogmobile or whether I should be responsible and trade it in.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:04 AM) If you watch any car commercials during football ads, they definitely try to sell there being a "Man card" on having a big engine in a pickup truck or SUV. Personally though, I always feel more excited about an exceptional turning radius or various other technologies. One thing I learned about the Nissan Leaf, for example, is that while it's plugged in, you can either set it on a schedule or use a smartphone to have it turn on the heater/air conditioner, so that the car is already warmed/cooled 10 minutes before you get into it, and you don't burn the battery doing so. Still one of the most intelligent things I've heard of in a car, that would make every day easier for me. I would absolutely love to get a Leaf as rarely do I ever make trips exceeding 10-20 miles at a time, and I did finally move out of the condo I was leasing and bought my own home, so I could get the charger installed. Unfortunately, I have a huge dog with another coming in a few months that I take to the park almost every day, and so I need something bigger. Been struggling to find the perfect dogmobile for a few months now. It's amazing that SUV's and trucks are back so quickly. It wasn't more than 3-4 years ago that auto industry analysts were saying the SUV would be extinct and would never be a mainstream automobile again, due to fuel costs. I remember going with my friend to buy his pickup truck and they were practically giving them away...he got like $10k off MSRP or something ridiculous. How short the memories of Americans can be.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 09:18 PM) He's been plain bad. We get the Chargers' broadcast here in Vegas since we don't have an NFL team and a lot of people have adopted them. Their announcers last night keep saying he is just not right. People can point to the injuries they have had at their skill positions but I seem to remember them being a lot more beat up last year at times and yet Rivers was still lighting everyone up. -
Buehrle, Castro, Omar, Pierre all file for FA

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:15 AM) No doubt. Widger had a fluky season in 2005 and I think the backups were pretty decent in 2000, but Castro did just about everything expected of him while here. I certainly respect the job therapist did while here. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 09:26 PM) I think you're making a gross exaggeration. It seems that the majority of people in favor of hiring Thomas are the same ones who love the Ventura signing. There are obviously some exceptions. I think there are far less people who would have liked to see Thomas as hitting coach than who are pleased with the Ventura hiring. For me personally, Ventura hold just a little bit more credibility than Big Frank in terms of coaching skills right now.

The bottom line is they have turned out some players that were not expected to rise so quickly or at all...just as the White Sox have done recently with Santos, Hudson, Sale, Humber, De Aza, Reed, Viciedo, and Lillibridge. You could very well be adding Flowers and Morel to the list shortly.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 05:34 PM) If you didn't notice, I said before August 29, which doesn't include this year's title. There's obviously no comparison now. I looked at it from 2005-2010, but when you include '04 that does tilt it more in their favor though. Well, since 05', they have won 18 more games than us in a crappier league. That's an average of about 2.57 games better per year. I wouldn't say it's a completely different franchise...

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:43 PM) All I know is that in the last two years their farm has produced David Freese, Jaime Garcia, Allen Craig, Fernando Salas, Jon Jay, Jason Motte, Mitchell Boggs and Eduardo Sanchez. They're doing something right over there. And obviously Shelby Miller and Carlos Martinez are both on the cusp. Now this is horses***. This same argument has been made by several of us regarding the White Sox, and you've dismissed it out of hand.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) Some team will give him several million dollars just to see if there's a chance he can. My guess will be something similar to the 1/$8m Berkman got last year with the Cardinals.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) He got s*** because of his performance, which was understandable. Tebow wont get that for awhile, which is bulls***. However the worst is Cutler who gets s*** for his facial expressions. Rex is also a bit of a dolt with the media...he isn't the sharpest guy in the world and didn't really know how to articulate the things he wanted to say in a way the media needed to hear it. He's done the same things in Washington. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 10:16 AM) I do remember the big deal that was made about how far he slipped down the draft chart. His draft position was a huge surprise. Wasn't the issue with Rodgers simply about the Tedford mechanics? I read that excerpt earlier which pointed out he had the high release prior to even going to Cal, but weren't the concerns all about the Tedford mechanics and the NFL coaches not believing in them? -

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Oct 30, 2011 -> 10:26 PM) He can run the wildcat formation, be the backup QB I think. With enough experience and what he brings to table he should be fine in that role. I think he could be a pretty solid TE... -
Just finished the Pillars of the Earth series, based off the book written by Ken Follett. Outstanding series, I recommend it very highly.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 30, 2011 -> 07:14 PM) i hope the bears are watching the cowboys and taking notes on how not to defend the eagles. good lord I think they are trying to put too much pressure on them and just getting beaten badly by the Eagles' speed. The Bears will try to contain them a lot more and force field goals and stalled drives by tackling and just hoping they make mistakes. Probably not too different than the recipe last year. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 30, 2011 -> 05:35 PM) This post is just ridiculous. Rasmus has done s*** so far for the Blue Jays, yet you have the nerve to call them a clear winner. You can say the Cardinals did well in the trade, but let's wait a couple years before we judge the Sox or the Blue Jays. Only an idiot would try to speak in absolutes right now. Or a Sith... -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 30, 2011 -> 08:47 AM) I'd say the Blue Jays and the Cardinals won it. The Cardinals got a needed starter for a talented, albeit struggling outfielder. The Blue Jays got a high-upside outfielder and a Kenny contract for Jason Frasor. The White Sox got Jason Frasor and a busted SP spect. There are two winners, and one clear, obvious loser. How is he a busted SP prospect? Because the White Sox acquired him? Funny that Stewart is busted, but family icon Rasmus is "high-upside," despite the fact that his attitude problems were the entire genesis of this trade. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 29, 2011 -> 09:07 PM) Explain how it's stupid. Say you and two friends make a trade. You all end up with money in the end (or saving money), but one friend uses his end of the trade to buy a winning lottery ticket. Each one of you has won, but that last guy clearly won the most. So many reasons. First, you can't attribute this trade as the reason the Cardinals won. Second, it's impossible to tell who has won the most right now. What if the first friend bought 10,000 shares of Google stock in 1996 with his money, and the lottery winner buys a luxury home but then squanders the rest? I know you're trying to say that you're only talking about the early returns, but your previous posts in the thread certainly belie that. Your entire point on the issue makes no sense when put the way you have put it. I believe you said the Cards won the WS, thus they won the trade, no point in further arguing it. To put it that way is to imply finality, which is exactly what several of us have been cautioning is impossible with a baseball trade this early in its infancy. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 29, 2011 -> 02:34 PM) Like saying all of the teams won? That's what I said might be the case, but the Cardinals have clearly won the most because they won the World Series. Simple. I think this is one of the stupidest posts I have ever seen. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 29, 2011 -> 11:54 AM) Absolutely. I will find this thread the day after the clincher once I sober up. When the trade happened, everyone said the Blue Jays had committed highway robbery & the Cardinals were the dumbest team ever. Looking back at hindsight, the trade solidified the Cards pitching staff, they got hot and won the wild card by a single game, and ended up as champs. We still don't know if Colby Rasmus is more Matt Kemp or more like Brian Anderson. Right now, the Cardinals are the big winners of this trade. Period. Your analogy doesn't work cause we saw what the Cardinals looked like before the trade, and plus Titanic should have never won Best Picture, no matter who the female lead was. No one is saying the Cardinals didn't benefit from this trade. And secondly, you can't attribute the success of the Cardinals post-trade completely to the deal. Anyone who's watched baseball for any number of significant time is well-aware that teams go on streaks, both good and bad, for any number of reasons. The White Sox went on their run in 2010 for 2 months...why? Why were they so good during that time but then not so good later or before, essentially with the exact same players? Regardless, the manner in which you are viewing this is completely wrong. There is the capacity for all teams to benefit tremendously from any trade. The best way to put it is that a trade is not a zero sum game. That puts it into perfect perspective. I'm not sure everyone understands what that means, however. -

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 29, 2011 -> 11:11 AM) Did anyone say the Sox lost the trade? Nobody's heard of a win-win? But unless the Sox or Blue Jays win a title with players received from this trade, the Cardinals won the most. Oh come on...that's ridiculous. It's quite possible that Colby Rasmus may contribute far more to the Blue Jays' than the players received by the Cardinals, even though the Cardinals went on to win the World Series. Maybe Zach Stewart goes on to win 18 games in 2014 for the White Sox and is the Postseason MVP as they capture the World Series. Are you going to come back then and say the White Sox won the trade the most? The trade worked out well for the Cardinals, and for the Blue Jays and White Sox, it's still a work in progress...but to say that because the Cardinals happened to win the WS this year, that they have and always and forever are the clear winners of the trade is not possible. That's like saying if Kate Winslet didn't play Rose in Titanic it would have never won Best Picture. Yes, it worked out with her in the role, but there is no telling that it wouldn't have done just as well or better with a different female lead. -

QUOTE (MAX @ Oct 29, 2011 -> 01:14 AM) I agree with pale sox. Trades, much like everything else in the world (but that's another argument), are not dualistic. Saying 'the cardinals won the trade' implies that they are. Right...saying the Cards won the trade because they won the WS is kind of like saying they were better off this year without Adam Wainwright. The bp arms they acquired definitely helped them more than anything, especially Eyechart.
