QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 01:23 PM) Honestly, there's no reason for Thornton to be on the team 25 1/2 hours from now. There certainly is...a win today and a big lead tomorrow would go a long way...

Jackson & Teahen to TOR for Frasor & Stewart (RHP)

QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 12:38 PM) From the Post Dispatch after the trade... Scouting Report on Edwin Jackson, the Cardinals new starting pitcher: I really don't think people realize how much Jackson improved during his time with the Chicago White Sox. Pitching coach Don Cooper made a positive impact. In 131 career starts before joining the White Sox, Jackson had a 4.68 ERA. In 30 starts with the White Sox, Jackson's ERA was 3.66. His strikeout rate went up. His ground-ball rate improved. His rate of baserunners per nine innings fell. His rate of allowing home runs decreased. His walk rate went down ... According to STATS, Jackson's fastball has averaged 94.5 mph this season. And his sharp slider averages 87 mph... Jackson had a 3.02 ERA in his last 8 starts for the White Sox ... against RH batters, Jackson almost exclusively throws the fastball and slider .... against LH batters, he mixes in a changeup ... his best swing-and-miss pitch is the slider; batters have whiffed on it 34.5 percent of the time... batters are hitting only .240 against the slider.... Jackson's ground-ball rate, which was stuck at around 50 percent in the middle of his career, has jumped to 63 percent this season. Read more: http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/ber...l#ixzz1TbxbgX1w But because he had a few bad outings and had a tendency to walk hitters, he was never appreciated here. Ridiculous. -
QUOTE (MLB Fan @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 11:48 AM) This is how our lineup is constructed currently when healthy: This week's heap of trash CF Prado LF McCann C Chipper 3B Freeman 1B Uggla 2B Heyward RF Gonzalez SS This team hits tons of HRs, but can't get on base for anything, which is what we need in front of McCann, Freeman, and Uggla. There is no place in the lineup for Quentin. Beachy, Teheran, Vizcaino, and Salcedo are absolute untouchables. Minor and/or Delgado could be traded at the right price. Bourn and Upton are our targets for CF and we also need a cheap RH bat to platoon with Heyward in RF and play LF when Chipper needs a day off (Prado to 3rd). This is the reason why the trade has not occurred, and most likely will not occur. The Braves are not desperate enough for Quentin, and the White Sox are not desperate enough to move him, especially with the recent on-field developments.
-
I could live with trading these two guys if we did get 3 or 4 of their top 10 prospects, because I honestly believe we could still win without Quentin or Thornton, assuming Viciedo's thumb heals well. You know Kenny would want someone that could contribute now, however. My guess is he would want Reddick back.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 09:57 AM) At least this week, we can sacrifice Peavy to Sabathia. Which means that Peavy will ratchet it up to 95-96, throw a shutout and at least SOME will be back on his bandwagon. Honestly, I like those kind of matchups for Peavy...I was happy when he was going against Verlander. He has the potential to throw up a bunch of zeroes, if Ozzie could just grow the sack to pull him when he needs to be. Let him throw 5 good innings once, build some confidence, and then bring in the pen. The way that Floyd, Danks and Mark have been pitching, we can certainly afford to use the pen for 4 innings when Peavy starts.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 09:48 AM) How are we more well-rounded? Relying on Peavy and Humber the rest of the way is very scary, and their offense is so much better, it negates any starting pitching advantage we have (IMO, of course). Anyone know how their schedule is the rest of the way? Regardless of what you think of Peavy/Humber, our team ERA is 3.64, while theirs is 4.26. Obviously their offense has been better than ours to this point, but we're underperforming, while they just have a lack of pitching. If I were a betting man, and I don't know how good of an idea that is after the fiasco Tuesday evening , I would take the White Sox over Detroit based on the pitching, whether Detroit adds Fister or not.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 09:41 AM) Pauley, Al Al, Benoit, Valverde, Coke? Still think if they can get anything from Porcello and Fister the rest of the way, the division is theirs with relative ease. Relative ease? No way. Their offense is better than ours, if you assume Dunn will suck for the remainder of the year, but we are a much more well-rounded team than Detroit.

Let's face it, if the White Sox manage to win again today, there just isn't any way that Kenny can trade Quentin without alienating the fan base. Especially if we happen to take over 2nd place in doing so. Meanwhile, the Braves (and Phillies last night) are basically daring the seller's to wait until the offseason to deal these guys if you want our #1 or #2 prospect for them. I can see Thornton or Ohman getting dealt for a prospect if the offer is solid, but I don't see Quentin getting moved unless we lose tonight and then get down big early tomorrow.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 08:30 PM) I wonder do Red Sox fans look at us the way we look at a team like the Royals. "We blitz the f*** out of everybody. But we can't seem to beat those mediocre White Sox." They would be a lot more vulgar, of course. It's probably a little different since we did sweep them in a postseason series and then win a WS...yes, I know it was 6 years ago...but those postseason defeats linger with you...

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:56 PM) I hate you Well, I've been saying this since the day we signed Dunn...this became a commitment for more than just this year...this became a commitment for 3-4 years. It's awfully hard to rebuild when you've got to commit $90 million in payroll while fielding a 70 win team, especially with this fan base. I think you almost have to stick with your plan and try to win in this window and pray that you can get something out of Dunn and Peavy. Baseball is a weird, weird game. If you can get yourself into the playoffs (or at least stay in the pennant race down the stretch), who knows, maybe Dunn will find his stroke again and turn red hot when we need him most. Stranger things have happened.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:51 PM) I think he's a great player. His defense this year has been just amazing compared to last year. I'd miss him, but if we're not going to have the money to extend him after next year, then right now is the perfect time to cash in on him. I just don't know if he's a player we can afford to move right now...We have as good a chance to win this division as anyone right now, and with Peavy and Dunn and Rios on our payroll for the next 2-3 years, I'm not sure going young at this very moment, versus keeping Q and Danks and Floyd and trying to win this year and next, is the best solution.

Jackson & Teahen to TOR for Frasor & Stewart (RHP)

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:27 AM) I agree that LaRussa can be a massive jerk at times and can alienate players. Scott Rolen is a good example. The bottom line, though, is that LaRussa knows how to win. At the very least, he knows a hell of a lot more about winning than Rasmus and his daddy. If I were Rasmus, I'd buy into LaRussa's system because it has a long track record of working. My issue with this situation is that there are veterans in St Louis that should have been able to serve as a buffer between Big Bad LaRussa and poor little Colby Rasmus. Holiday and Berkman could have taken this kid under their wings and protected him a bit, if there really was this huge rift between manager and player. It seems as though ALL the Cardinals coaches expressed frustration with this kid, not just Tony LaRussa. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 06:41 PM) The Sox have Frasor/Crain in the pen. Cowley is pissed. Last night he said no way the rumor was true. He got scooped by a guy in his underwear in his mom's basement. No, he got scooped by a guy with a direct source inside the White Sox organization. The guy in his mom's basement just happens to follow that guy on twitter. -

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 04:33 PM) When I heard Kenny's interview on The Score today, the bit about "four average pitches" made me laugh. I know he didn't mean for it to sound the way it did, but it just sounded so bad. And what exactly is a "power change up"? -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 01:50 PM) I mean if Jackson gets one, why not you? Sorry half the board STILL can't spell your name. Your twitter account was sometimes humorous, so thanks. You really do go out of your way sometimes...
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 11:33 AM) I wish him well but Milkman is essentially right. Never should have traded Hudson. Very very dumb. Thank goodness Teahen is gone forever. Edwin didn't trade himself to the Sox for Dan Hudson. The guy pitched well for us, which is the only thing in his control. Thanks for the innings, Edwin. You deserved a better fate. Good luck with the Cards!

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 10:40 AM) I'm PM'ing you my PayPal number. I'd like the $5000.00 by the end of the day, please. Maybe if you had admitted your source was Kona and not pretended as though you had some inside knowledge when you didn't I would have believed you. You did nothing other than take a post from an actual source. I give you credit for posting it here first, but nothing else. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 10:10 AM) According to Keith Law, Stewart is immediately our #1 prospect. Well, if this is true, and I don't know s*** about prospects, then I am happy with this. Getting good prospects is what I advocated rather than trading him for and Thornton for Rasmus. -

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 10:42 AM) Posters need to listen to you and DocSox more. It actually makes a lot of sense, replace Thornton next year with Frasor as 7/8th inning guy or trade both (as they will both be in high demand for teams competing now). I see plenty of moves following this one. My problem is just the timing of the deal. I refuse to believe that the Red Sox or Yankees wouldn't have been willing to eat Teahen's contract and actually give you back something that could be used for our future. I don't get why we need to do this deal on Wednesday morning. -

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:51 AM) Well since Shack is on a roll with that, someone should see if he'll add another 5 G's to bet in this thread. Hah...as soon as I realized it was Kona, I was more concerned. But I still think that something is getting lost in translation here. This has got to be misinformation. If it's not, and we don't get a premium prospect, and we won't, then I will be finished with this regime and you won't find me defending them any longer.
