Just finished Gunslinger, Jeff Pearlman's book about Brett Favre. Pretty interesting read, albeit a tad long. Well done all-around though. Next is Shoe Dog, by Phil Knight.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

QUOTE (CyAcosta41 @ Dec 26, 2016 -> 02:26 PM) Sure, show me up ... make my points in far fewer words! No, no, no. For an increasing number of folks, reading your posts is an absolute pleasure. Please error on the long-winded side of the fence, if ever in any doubt. -

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 26, 2016 -> 02:07 PM) Its worth taking a bit less of a price than TOTAL FLEECING and just dealing Quintana now to avoid being burned by the ever-present threats (even in the case of Mr Consistent himself) of ineffectiveness or injury. Could you imagine if Q busts his shoulder in May for a terrible Sox team and getting basically nothing in return for him? This isn't an argument to give him away, but it is an argument to be a little more flexible on the asking price. I disagree. I understand your point, but we are still the one moving the established piece. While the increased understanding of the value of prospects has made blue chippers more difficult to acquire than ever, I think our demands are reasonable. We can't come out slightly ahead or even IF things work out in the best way possible. We need to come out WELL AHEAD if things break in the best way possible - because the odds are that they won't. I don't understand why the Sale deal is so incredibly lopsided in our favor. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 26, 2016 -> 12:41 PM) One thing I'm thinking about right now is that the White Sox have already taken 2 franchises that think they can win right now...and gutted them. So, there were teams willing to go all-in and make a move, and teams that had the resources to do so, and 2 of those teams are now gone. So now...we're left with a set of teams that should still make moves, but they're more hesitant to do so. So, maybe we're also running into a demand shortage. We've tapped out 2 teams, leaving only a handful of teams who even have the resources to make such a move. If that were the case, then waiting on a few drafts, signings, and minor league breakouts, maybe even combined with a major league surprise or injury or two, could be required before anyone steps up to pay this price. Yeah, that's a good point, but I think the optics of those two deals may be impacting things more than actual liquidity. There are teams that have the assets and that actually should be in a position to move them, but I feel like they are refusing to pay the same price because of the optics. It may just be a matter of waiting them out a bit longer while they try to play it cute. -
Wife got me an iPad Pro and all the requisite accessories. I primarily use a MacBook Pro and a 2nd gen iPad. Not sure what to make of this...whether I actually want to open it or not...

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 24, 2016 -> 04:59 PM) 49ers just won their game against the Rams. Browns go back to 1st overall pick now. Bears can now fall back as far as 6th pick if they win next week. But we have #3 if we lose, correct?

Do we really accept that as fact at this point though? Worst case, couldn't you just complete the trade and then move McCutchen afterwards? Secondly, isn't equally s***ty that the White Sox are unwilling to take on salary to complete the transaction? -
Anyone use a stationary bike at home? I've been looking at those peloton bikes for quite awhile now...seems like a good way to get a half hour workout in the morning or evening...

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 01:48 PM) It was a good segment Glasnow is legit, I have no issue stocking up on premium arms Too much talk about bell though. Pittsburgh likely wants to keep him and might be willing to move Newman or other prospects So Pittsburgh doesn't want to move Meadows or Bell? This sounds like the reason for Yankees being involved. -

Hell, we should be willing to take McCutchen if that's what needs to happen. Flip him at the deadline for some more pieces. -

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 11:30 AM) If the Pirates get Quintana, it's going to be a 2-team trade. The Yankees stuff seems off. They can make their own trade after the fact,. The only reason for the Yankees to get involved is if the Pirates are unwilling to move a top bat. That's why the Glasnow to NYY idea is interesting. -

Is there any scenario wherein the White Sox take back McCutchen? Or is this more like the Pirates won't move their top bats, but the Yankees have an excess, so we're getting the Yankees involved in Glasnow to get the likes of Rutherford and Andujar back? -
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 11:17 AM) Certainly but for acquisition costs you would both be paying Abreu more and paying prospects for Abreu. And Carter still gave out a respectable .320 OBP and fantastic .499 slugging last year. Flawed but cheap player. IF you are a DH away... For sure, but he also hit .199 the year before. He's a .730-800 .OPS player generally, whereas Abreu has the ability to go >850-.950 IMO. Do they both hit home runs, yes. However, that is where the comparisons end. I suppose it just depends what the Sox are asking for in Abreu.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 10:09 AM) Would you rather trade prospects for Frazier/Abreu or just sign Chris Carter for 8 million. Well, Abreu is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Chris Carter as a hitter. That's not really a fair comparison at all.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 08:37 AM) Here is some reading. http://yanksgoyard.com/2016/10/21/yankees-...s-one-to-watch/ Substantially out performed Trey at AA. Trey has constantly been pushed for his age limit, but this year will probably repeat. Trey isn't done yet but Andjuhar is a top ten prospect in a much deeper system so a better spec Just want to add, you've been an awesome consistent presence in these threads since the offseason. Appreciate all you've been posting. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 08:34 AM) This return would be amazing. If we're going to engage in a three-way deal with Pitt/NYY, I would prefer we take the opportunity to acquire 2 position players as the top two pieces, if possible. I know we love Rutherford, and he would be an idea 2nd piece. Just wish we could make that first piece either Meadows or Torres or Frazier. I agree in regards to stacking talent and not worrying about fit quite yet, but it sure seems like these other orgs are hoarding their position players ahead of their pitching prospects. I think that is an indication of value that we are accepting, which I wish we were unwilling to do. -

QUOTE (gosoxgo2005 @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 08:16 AM) Hey Dick Allen. I've perused these message boards very sparingly over the last like 8 months or so. Recently a little more. I try to avoid message boards because they're all the same. It took me like 3 days of reading these boards to immediately pin you as the internet know it all dick head. I mentioned it to others who read the site and they confirmed my suspicions. I didn't and probably wouldn't have seen your messages today cuz I haven't read these boards since the Sale trade and was pointed it out by people who do read them. And for the record, if you knew anything about what I do online, which you clearly don't, you'd know that I myself and the medium I write for is satirical in nature, and that I shouldn't be getting scoops, let alone having people like Jon Heyman, Buster Olney, Ken Rosenthal, etc. use me as a source. Those are the big shot journalists we make fun of. People who are antiquated in how they approach writing, breaking news, etc. All of the news that I break is exactly that - a joke; that said I do have legit sources in the organization with both players and FO. That said, I'll keep getting paid to be an internet tough guy and work with the White Sox a few times a year to coordinate parties at their games. Got 600 people out last year for one game alone and they handed me $3000 in $100 bills. They reach out to me, because they know I put asses in seats. And Brian is my guy, as are James and Aaron, and though I fibbed to them saying Brian didn't know the package that he just tweeted about, I was the one who brought this exact trade scenario to his attention. He just confirmed it with his people. Sources are boooooone dry. PS - I've told the WGN story a billion times. I was rushed there from work and it was 1000 degrees out. I was nervous. I laughed at it too. It was embarrassing but I embrace it. There's a reason I'm on TV, gonna go on the radio today, etc. Welcome aboard, good Sir! -

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 07:38 AM) I know Dave well enough to know he's not BS'ing. Sometimes it's simply a matter of having info you can't release until you get the OK. Not saying that's the case here but he's proven time & time again he's someone to trust and has the inside track on something. Brian trusts him as well, which is enough for me. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 09:18 AM) Honestly, can we really knock Loggains for getting 27 points with Barkley at the helm. I think if we all looked at our expectations of Barkley when he was first announced and then look at what he's done and talk about how well he's played, we can give Matt a ton of credit, but is it fair to ignore Loggains? It is so hard to know what Loggains is, given all the injuries, etc. I'll be the first to admit I am shocked at how well Barkley has played. I watched him in the initial game against GB? and thought oh man, this guy is immobile, has no arm, and generally has no clue what he is doing. Typical Bears backup. I still think he's a backup, but he's certainly serviceable for me until we find our next QB. As for the state of the team, I don't agree we are 10 talented players away. 10 talented players (at least my interpretation of what Rock means by "talented") means you are a playoff team, as far as I am concerned. I think we've got 5-6 already, with a few more on the cusp (Floyd, Howard). While we may lose 1-2 in Jeffery, Young, etc, I think if you can add a QB and maybe 3-4 pieces, you are in business. Keep adding to that and you're starting to build an elite roster (assuming one is a QB). I don't love Fox as a coach, but he's done a lot of what we asked him to come in here and do. Remember what this team was like in the last few games of the Trestman era.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 23, 2016 -> 07:13 AM) I was just looking at that tweet. In my memory I thought that was a one for one swap and totally forgot about Nick Masset and our fireballing 07 bullpen. Not a great memory considering the fireballers we are bringing in now edit: although it did remind me of one of soxtalk's best nicknames, David AAArdsma Masset went on to be pretty decent with the Reds, didn't he? -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 04:35 PM) Just a feeling but I don't think Pirates will give up Newman. I'm guessing Glasnow, Bell and Hayes is the structure of the deal You really like Bell. Are you concerned that a deal that did not include Meadows (but did include Bell) would leave us without enough premier hitting prospects after moving our top 3 pieces? -
QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:50 AM) Thanks guys. The only downside has been that I haven't been able to really use it. I flew home for Christmas the day after I bought it. Haha. I would have been tempted to drive it!

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 02:04 PM) Where in Switzerland and Italy? I've been to Italy a lot and also Zurich in Switzerland, may be able to offer some advice there. Going to head north from Monte Carlo probably to Genoa and then Milan, then settle in Lugano, Switzerland for a few evenings. Then head back down to Nice for a night before heading home.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 12:40 PM) Talked to my friend, he said definitely go in the casino but make sure you wear something nice, a lot of tourists don't realize they have a strict dress code to get into the nicer parts of the casino. Other than that, he said check out the palace, walk around the yachts, and do a short trip to Monaco. Some people found it cool to get their passport stamped there, but that probably depends on your interests. FYI, Monaco is kind of boring as no one really lives there, but it is really beautiful. Thanks Russ. I've got a lot of research to do still to figure out how to fill all our days, but I'm sure that won't be too difficult. We can always leave the French Riviera for few days if need be. Edit: So you convinced me...I decided to switch things up and only stay 3 nights in Monte Carlo. Then we'll heading through Italy and Switzerland for a few nights, before heading back to Nice. Thanks for the insight, Russ!
