Also no one is taking away your right to vote. It's taking away your registration to vote. Registration is an important step and prevents you from being able to vote in elections you have no business voting in (e.g., voting in Chicago if you moved to California)
-
Same day registration should be doable, and again it's a "why is our system so ancient/terrible," but how would you prevent voter fraud? Someone could just go to multiple polling places and vote multiple times. And 100% agree it should be a national holiday. Or at least moved to a Saturday.
-
I do, and if someone is removed from the registry for failing to return the card, they should be able to follow the same registration process and vote again. That's why I don't see a problem here - they get removed and as far as I can tell they have no additional hurdles to re-register. They just have to do it within 30 days of the election, which is true for anyone. I'd be fine with return receipt. And other options to verify (online, in person, etc.) Look, our election system is 1000 times more complicated than it needs to be. But having to verify your address AND vote in a four year period to stay registered is not too much to ask IMO.

It's made me depressed reading all these stories about it being 20 years since the last Bulls championship. 20 freakin years -

I think he's already made it public that he's re-signing with the Warriors. -
Come on, those are vastly different from this. This is less work than registering. It's just a verification of your residence on a freakin' postcard. You can skip all the elections you want, just verify your address. Again, there may be no good reason to remove people from the registry or there may be a very good reason. I have no idea. But I think it's laughable that putting in the smallest amount of "work" like this can be considered a barrier or some kind of voter suppression. You'll find that ANY effort to vote will impact more liberals than republican based on class. So, why even have registration as a requirement? That takes some work!
-
Great. I ask again, how hard is it to return a postcard? And what are the hurdles to re-registering?
-
And what are the "hurdles" to getting back the ability to vote? Re-registering? How on earth can people do that if they can't even send in a pre-addressed/stamped post card?!
-
How difficult is it to return a postcard? As difficult as registering in the first place?
-
On the one hand, i'm not sure why it's a problem if people that have registered and don't vote remain registered (perhaps there is a good reason?), but on the other, I don't see the problem with removing people who (1) don't return the pre-addressed/pre-stamped postcard sent by the state to verify they still reside at the address, and then (2) fail to vote [edit: FOR FOUR YEARS]. It's laughable that that can be considered a barrier to vote.

This is typical New York/Boston media hype IMO. Creates talking points. -

I like how this "leak" isn't even sourced to the Celtics. it's from this bleacher report, which cites to conjecture of Chris Mannix (and only Mannix): http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2780152-kyrie-irving-rumors-celtics-scared-pg-will-leave-in-2019-fa-join-knicks -

https://www.theringer.com/nba/2018/6/8/17440192/lebron-james-boston-celtics-offseason This is such a dumb, click bait article written to appease the Boston homers that probably make up the majority of Simmons' (e.g, The Ringer's) audience. Zero chance the Celtics trade Hayward or Irving a year after signing/trading for them. -

I don't see it. Kyrie doesn't want to play with Lebron so you would have to get rid of him. And who takes less minutes so he can play 35-40 minutes a game? -
I wonder what his fine was. I think the fine for not getting a permit is double the original permit fee, so for this a whopping $130 bucks, plus I guess the possibility that I would have to redo something. It just doesn't seem worth the cost if I have to also pay to get a survey done. I did look into those shed-in-a-box kits and they do look like they cheap out on a lot of parts (24 inch vs 16 inch framing, for example). That's why I ended up deciding to do my own. Plus I was worried about getting low grade lumber that is all knotted or warped.
-
So i'm going to build a shed in my backyard. Nothing fancy, probably 10x12 or 12x12. Not going to spend the extra dough and pour a whole concrete pad, just throw it on some blocks and skids and landscape it nicely. In looking into it more I discovered that I need to obtain a permit for this, along with a review. I also need to give a plat of survey (i'm hoping I received one as part of my home purchase 8-9 years ago). This all seems overboard to me. Anyone else build a shed without getting a permit? I doubt the village would ever find out, because i'm not throwing anything away. I suppose they could come by at some point and see a large lumber shipment, but that would be about it. I've read that maybe tax assessors will see it and possibly discover no permit was pulled? I find that hard to believe as well - why would the assessor's office care?

My wife loves it and I just can't stand it. One, because it's just depressing as shit, and two, the whole premise of the show is too unrealistic/unbelievable for me. In a fictionalized near-future world I need to be able to believe that people act/think logically and they just don't in that show.

Lebron is the better overall player based on size, athleticism, longevity, etc. but Jordan is still the GOAT. Excelling at the absolute peak of the profession...Jordan has no match in the modern game. -
But you can if you are exercising your own constitutionally protected religious freedom/speech. And that's where I think he's got a good argument. I doubt this case ever comes back up because it's a very limited fact pattern. I think the next one will be a challenge of Indiana's law (I think it's Indiana) that expressly states you can refuse service based on your religious beliefs and the question will be if it is narrowly tailored enough. IMO this whole area has very limited application. There are very few "because of my religious beliefs" applications. Weddings would be one. I really can't think of another.
-
Yeah I don't buy it. It's not discrimination against a protected class of people if you're willing to perform a service for those people. It's about the message, not the class. If they had come in and asked for a cake that said "congrats on the abortion!" do you think he would be within his rights to say no? Or would he be discriminating against them simply by virtue of saying no?
-
The ACLU represented them. They paid nothing.
-
I think it's going to depend on the set of facts in the next case. This guy said he didn't want to bake a cake for the purpose of a wedding, but it was undisputed that he offered to provide them his goods and services for anything else. Not sure how you can read that as discrimination against gay people in violation of the Constitution. At best it's a discrimination against an occasion/event. I think the Court would probably agree with that if this issue ever came up again given the pretty lengthy discussion about freedom of religious speech in the opinion. Also, I listened to an NPR interview with the couple and it kind of annoys me that they readily admit they had no expectation (and probably intention) of actually getting a cake from this guy for their wedding. It was all set up. I'm sure there are other people out there facing actual discrimination whose cases are not being heard because these guys wanted to prove a point and took a space on the court's docket.
-
Fat chance. The talking points provided to both sides (and the ad revenue it generates) to confirm their biases is too great.
-
Also, while we're at it, can we just kill these assholes? Why is this guy allowed to live out his days in a prison? Just get rid of him already.
-
You sound like the unreasonable gun people you're complaining about. According to Twitter (read: who knows if there is any truth to this), sounds like this kid was a big fan of guns and nazi's. It's too bad we don't have this network of websites that dumb young kids post their entire lives on that can be used to possibly predict this type of behavior.
