  1. At some point school districts are going to go the way of airport security. One entrance, metal detectors, no more easily accessible open spaces, etc.
  2. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:49 AM) Jenks, What about this: Do you think with all of those police reports, being expelled from school, making threats about becoming a school shooter on the internet, that his ability to purchase a gun should have been revoked at least temporarily? Or perhaps that the govt should have had the right to confiscate his weapons? This is the problem. You could create rules that would make it less likely for people who are threats to get guns, but certain politicians are so hellbent on making sure that everyone/anyone can get a gun and a moments notice, that they dont even want any restrictions. I 100% agree that this kids history of mental health treatment, legal and school troubles, etc. should have put him on a list and he should never have been able to purchase/possess any gun. But people blaming the FBI for not doing something...there's nothing they can do until he makes a legitimate threat.
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:42 AM) There are adopted children with no father figures who are outcasts and loners in every country. The rest of the world hasn't had 18 shootings at schools in the first 6-7 weeks of 2018. It seems to be more relevant than post hoc "mental illness" diagnoses. I think it's a lazy answer to say it's a culture problem, especially when no one ever points to something in our culture that explains it.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:39 AM) Law enforcement official tells Eva Perez that there were at least two FBI reports on the guy. The FBI didn't share the information with local law enforcement. Not clear if they ever fully ID'd the shooter as the same person who made the youtube comment. https://twitter.com/jaketapper/status/964160387099873283 But you're right. Finding and preventing a single shooter is really, really hard unless they're making their plans known to friends or acquaintances. It's perfectly legal and in some places normal to stockpile and obsess over guns, so that's not a reliable sign. "Edgy" pro-violent rhetoric, especially if at all anonymized, isn't all that uncommon. From the NYT it sounds like the local police knew the kid because the mother would call them in hopes of curbing his behavior. But I still don't think there's anything they could have done in terms of charges or jail time.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:36 AM) The kid was expelled and was no longer a student at the school. Last year, when he was still a student, he wasn't allowed to carry a backpack. I'm not sure what more school administration should or even could do. I haven't dealt with schools, but part of my job requires assessing motivated active shooter scenarios sometimes. If someone is willing to kill or be killed/captured, there is not a whole lot you can do to stop them if they have readily available access to firearms. It's a cultural problem that's much larger than just some gun laws will solve or for specific actions in specific cases ex post facto. So many of these cases are single individuals who are self-radicalizing rather than a group of people plotting, and that is much harder to find and prevent ahead of time. Still not sure I buy the "cultural problem" argument that people are making. What about our culture impacted this kids life? I'm not even sure what our shared "culture" is. Florida culture is different from Illinois culture. Heck, this county is probably different than most in Florida. He's an adopted kid. He had no father figure. I'm sure he was an outcast/loner. This is a revenge/attention seeking person.
  6. So what exactly was the FBI to do here? Keep a 24/7 watch on this kid? Over a Youtube comment?
  7. More bullying prevention/enforcement and ensuring schools do all they can to make kids feel welcome and loved will do more to prevent this stuff than more gun laws. edit: to be clear, i'm not saying that reasonable gun legislation shouldn't also be a part of the solution.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 11:23 AM) Does that make the Cavs better or worse on the court this season? (Honestly don't know) They get younger and more athletic. But neither of those guys are going to be huge stars or anything. Thomas has been terrible in the 15 games he's played. And it seems like he and Lebron don't get along. So I think this was to appease Lebron and also rid the Cavs of having to decide whether to pay Isiah a big contract next year. Also, Windhorst said this trade now prevents them from trading the Nets pick until after the draft.
  9. Pretty good move there I think. But boy, that Kyrie trade was such a dumb, dumb move by them.
  10. Cleveland would be dumb to move that pick without Lebron's assurance that he's staying.
  11. I was JUST coming to post the same thing. That looked so cool with them synchronized.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 5, 2018 -> 09:24 AM) JT has a good backlog, which made it seem okay, but the way they cut up those songs was terrible, so much pumped through each song you couldn't make out what the hell was happening. I agree with this. Cut 2 or 3 songs and make some of the others a little longer and it would have been better.
  13. I dunno, I think women like him a lot and kids like him for that "can't stop the feeling" song (mine do anyway). I thought it was fine. No Bruno Mars, the best recently, but better than Beyonce by a mile.
  14. Great game. Won some money, the Pats lost, halftime show was a solid B. I think the commercials were the most disappointing part. Maybe i'm an old man now, but I really feel like 10-15 years ago there was a golden age for those commercials and now they suck. I really enjoyed the Eli Manning/Odell Beckham Dirty Dancing spoof though. That was pretty fantastic.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 4, 2018 -> 01:25 PM) when is the last time Illinois played a basketball game where the officials weren't out to get them? I used to here it when watching games with my dad an UI grad and fanatic. My brother is the same way. b****ing about officiating =/= believing there is a specific vendetta against your team. It's complaining about the officiating. I let a lot of stuff go. It's a tough game to call and there are a lot of judgment calls that can go either way. What pisses me off though is the call like that moving screen against Black. That happens probably every single trip down the floor and it's rarely called. So why did that official suddenly decide to call it at that specific moment in the game? It's just poor officiating, plain and simple.
  16. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 4, 2018 -> 01:14 PM) Yeah, that game turned on a dime. If Illinois can find a big man transfer, they're going to be good next year. If they don't, they're going to suck again. They have Black and then no one else. And Black isn't great.
  17. lol, Black called for a moving screen to foul out. It's the right call, but christ, that happens 50 times in a game without getting called. Ludicrous to call that at this juncture and for that particular player. #bigtenofficiating
  18. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 4, 2018 -> 12:52 PM) It’s mental and contagious. Even MAAR was throwing bricks up. What’s happening in Columbus? Pretty typical Illinois game. For 15-20 minutes they look like the best team in the conference. Then they look like the worst. They'll lose this in some hilarious way.
  19. Make sure to call them and explain. I hear they are very good about refunds/rescheduling.
