  1. I would imagine he means after school starts. You obviously couldn't have that situation in case of a fire.
  2. The problem is now these schools are opening up the door to lawsuits. They get immunity, but not for willful and wanton conduct.
  3. Have a political rep advocate for it! A much easier sell than changing gun control laws, an effort that has failed for decades despite numerous tragedies. Again, try something different if we're not satisfied with the change in gun laws. Try a different angle to prevent/limit the problem. Why continue to focus (solely) on an issue that has zero chance of changing in the short term. Why not try something that actually has a chance?
  4. So go find an expert and talk to one. That's something a school can do without the need for government intervention. And change the laws if we have to. Changing fire codes is a helluva lot easier than gun laws.
  5. Do both then. As many have said for years now, if dead kids at Sandy Hook doesn't result in even minor changes, nothing will. It's insane to just continue to b**** about something that you've b****ed about before for years with zero action. Try another angle that doesn't involve guns, even if it's just a first step.
  6. Like, why is this a thing? Install a fucking metal bracket/hook system to lock the door from the inside (or out) as soon as there is an active shooter situation. How expensive can that be?
  7. Ok, then where's the congressman asking for federal dollars to provide those locks or metal detectors or whatever at all schools? Screw gun control, it's a lost battle, move on to what you can possible do, that's why i'm saying. If someone has, let's be promoting that instead of just b****ing about gun control over and over again which at this point people just ignore and scroll past in their twitter feed. And yes, I understand this happens outside of schools. But we're complaining about inaction, so let's talk about possible solutions even in only a portion of the settings.
  8. So, one question I have is that we've had a bunch of these school shootings now, but are schools themselves doing anything to change? Seems like in a lot of these cases the gunman is a student and is able to just stroll into school and start shooting. Where's the discussion at school board meetings about what districts are doing to change school protocol? Are we installing locking mechanisms on doors? Are we closing up access points so that entrances/exits are focused during certain hours? Obviously the government has failed us in a lot of ways, but even if we get a lot of the changes people want, there is still going to be the otherwise normal/sane person who flips and has access to his stockpile, so it still makes sense to implement some common sense stuff at schools.
  9. I still think it's funny that the FOID application in Illinois asks you if you have a mental illness. Like yep, that question will stop someone. "Damn, I gotta tell the truth on this thing!"
  10. Yeah, I mean certainly there are a good chunk of reps that don't care/don't know what they're talking about, but at least they have access to people who do know or can get to the source. How many people actually take the time to look into issues versus watching Fox News/MSNBC for the talking points that are being fed to them? If you're going by what the people want, the vast majority of people wanted to disenfranchise minorities for the majority of our country's history. Obviously not a good reason to keep slavery/property ownership/restricted voting rights/insert discriminatory policies. Not saying I don't agree with the 86%, just that citing to what people want is never a good argument as to what's good policy.
  11. I mean, I think that's why we have a representative democracy and not a true democracy. I'd be scared if the entire country had to vote on referendums or whatever.
  12. Right, but that's why pointing to what the American public as a whole thinks or wants is never a good idea. It's meaningless. The American people as a whole are really fucking stupid. Drew Carey was on Mark Maron's podcast a couple weeks ago and was talking about doing a game show that was centered around polls and surveys. Contestants had to guess how many people thought X or Y. I can't remember the specific examples now, but one was a question about asking people who their sentator or rep was and something like 10% of people knew. I tried to find the exact number, but here's a story with a similar result: https://www.bostonglobe.com/magazine/2015/03/28/how-many-people-know-their-senators/yfgXyHR96X7YGhesaNQbnM/story.html Bottom line is that more people than you think are dumb and it's not just Republicans. Even if a majority of people want something doesn't mean they know whether it's a good or bad thing for them.
  13. Of the 86% polled, how many could explain what net neutrality is and why it is important? 30%? 40%?
  14. How do you add spoiler tags on the new board?
  15. So, I think it's time for Toronto to blow it up. Can't believe how much they fold when it comes to the playoffs/Lebron.
  16. I do. Tough to talk about it right now since the first two episodes were a lot of set up, not much substance.
  17. I guess I assumed his reference to "our family" meant it was his sister.
  18. This part strikes me as incredibly...odd. She's 40 with 2 kids. Why is she interested in keeping ties with some ex-boyfriend from 20 years in her past? What's her justification? Is he advancing her career? Is he a networking tool? I'd say your advice is spot on. I'd tell your sister to grow the fuck up. She's a mom, not a teenager. She's acting like a high school kid. She's going to screw up her kids' life over this.
  19. edit: and yes, I acknowledge the irony of me b****ing on an internet forum about someone on the internet b****ing ?
  20. Because this country can't not find something to b**** about, here's the latest "controversy." White chick wears a traditional Chinese dress to prom. Random Chinese guy on Twitter says that's not cool. Tens of thousands of people "like" the Tweet and agree with him. Media picks up the controversy and makes it a bigger deal! 'Merica. https://www.sltrib.com/news/2018/05/01/its-just-a-dress-utah-teens-chinese-prom-attire-starts-cultural-appropriation-debate/ Seriously though, I love how the PC crowd forces everyone to completely ignore the differences between genders/races/cultures and pretend like we're all the exact same, but at the same time has rules to never misappropriate culture! Never wear anything that isn't intended for you! For shame! For shame! This ridiculous story reminds me of Disney having to pull Moana/Maui outfits because, gasp!, white kids wanted to DRESS UP AND EMULATE BEING A DIFFERENT CULTURE OTHER THAN THEIR OWN. My God, the horror! This country is the fucking worst. Nothing but assholes that like to b**** and whine and get upset over the smallest things. Seriously, fuck that guy on Twitter for complaining about this. /3:15pm rant.
  21. Yeah, only registered sex offenders are prohibited from living by schools under existing law. It should be changed to include felons serving significant jail time. This monster should be dead and/or in jail for life. This is a clear breakdown of our legal system.
  22. How is that a talking point? It's mostly the truth.
