QUOTE (G&T @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 01:07 PM) I think it’s a judicial ethics issue, not a legally appealable issue unless the sentience is somehow outside the bounds of law. And there's really nothing wrong with a judge inserting his/her personal opinions or feelings when handing down a sentence. You just can't be discriminatory, racist, etc. She can call him soulless monster all she wants. Not sure I understand the uproar over this comment: I take it as her saying i'd consider giving you an eye for an eye sentence if I could. I don't think she's advocating that he get raped in prison.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 12:35 PM) Disagree. Convicted defendants are entitled to rights - including the right not to be attacked by a victim in court. Sentencing hearings - particularly in cases like this or in violent crimes - are extremely emotional settings. If you start drawing lines that attempts to attack the defendant in open court aren't going to be punished... that's really bad. It would be one thing if he got to the guy, but he didn't. That monster not only committed these crimes, but has zero remorse for what he did. I hope he fears for his life every minute that he's in prison.

(1) It's too bad his request was denied; (2) I really hope the local state's attorney declines to press charges. http://thebiglead.com/2018/02/02/victim-fa...y-nassar-video/

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 1, 2018 -> 05:06 PM) Bulls received a trade exception of 12.5 million. I don't know what that is. Anyone care to explain? As I understand it, they gave up more salary than they received in the trade, so in subsequent trades they can use the 12.5 mil to balance that next trade out. Or something. -

QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 1, 2018 -> 12:59 PM) I wonder if the second Niko trade was Paxson's doing because Forman couldn't get it done the first time... Niko balked at the deal (he has a no trade) because it didn't guarantee him the 2nd year and he would have lost his Bird rights. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 1, 2018 -> 10:42 AM) We did the Holiday Inn/IHG version. We got 4 days/3 nights free on Galveston Island for going. Not sure what the Hyatt version is, but with IHG, now instead of one specific condo/apartment for the same week every single year, they give you a block of points, and each of their resorts has a point value so that you can use the points however you like. It isn't cheap, so we didn't do it, but it was at least interesting to us because of its flexibility. Just like any of these things they will first try to sell you on a maximum package at a maximum price, and it a consumer rated loan that comes with a high credit card type interest rate. When you tell them no, the package and the pricing will come down to more reasonable levels. If the Hyatt style is similar in its flexibility and you are a family that does something in terms of significant travel on a regular basis, I can see how it would be interesting. At worst, you can even use the points they give you for regular hotel travel nights, though that isn't the best value for the points. We've looked into the Disney version in the past and it just made zero financial sense. Something like 25k or 50k down, then an annual fee (thousands per year), and then you still have to pay a nightly rate when you want to go. I failed to see any benefit other than staying at more exclusive resorts.

Has anyone taken one of those timeshare presentation offers? I got one from Hyatt this week. 6 days, 5 nights in Maui. Free 6 day car rental. In one of their 2 bedroom suites. $600. You have to sit through a 90 (not to exceed 120) minute presentation on their timeshare stuff, that's the only draw back. My wife and I stayed at the Hyatt hotel next door to the timeshare property for part of our honeymoon and absolutely loved it. I would love to go back, especially for this cheap. Two hours out of 6 days doesn't seem like a big deal... Curious if anyone else has done this before.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 11:16 PM) Polls had Hillary decimating Trump. Last I checked Republicans control the House, the Senate and President. You can keep relying on polls, but those polls dont matter. Polls dont take into account how electoral college votes are split, polls dont take into account states for the senate and polls dont take into account districts for the House. Hillary won the popular vote, just like those polls, its meaningless. And you can make excuses for Sanders, just like people make excuses for Clinton. But Id rather win elections and be able to implement progressive policies than believe that somehow what people in all of those red states want is a MORE progressive candidate. It defies all facts and evidence. You have to play and win the game in the confines of the rule. Until the popular vote means something, you have to play to the electoral college. The numbers from the last election do not show some sort of path for Sanders to victory. I just dont get the angle here. But Id be glad to be proven wrong, unfortunately history and evidence dont suggest I am. Polls are often crap on those major policy questions. When you're asked a question on the phone - would you like to see every young person get an education for free? - it's generally THOUGHT OF as a good idea, but when people actual vote, and actually think about HOW we can achieve something like that, the position changes because the question then becomes, well wait, who is paying for it? It's coming out of my pocket? Oh, then never mind.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 04:58 PM) It wasn't authentic... It's no flaming spear being thrown into the ground while riding bare-back on a horse like Florida State, but they did research and based it off of the dances of plain indians, right?

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 04:26 PM) Do you see the article about the professor possibly getting in trouble due to filming the Chief in the restroom? It is hilarious. Yes, and it's pathetic the school isn't even admonishing him for what he did. Take away the bathroom aspect of it (illegal) and it's still a professor GOING AFTER A STUDENT. How is that acceptable?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 04:25 PM) I wasn't ever "offended" but I always thought 'The Chief' was dumb and corny as hell I grew up with it as a kid and going to games and watching the war chant/dance gave me chills every time. It was fun. It got the crowd into games. Corny or not, it served a purpose. Halftime is sterile as hell now.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 04:11 PM) This isn't even close to a true recitation of what happened with the Chief. I was a HUGE fan of the Chief. Got chills when he danced to the end. But it was a tradition that offended a lot of people, and it needed to go. Also, I, too, remember all those memorials to FDR for interning Japanese-Americans. I mean, come on, Jenks. This is the same BUT THE FOUNDING FATHERS OWNED SLAVES stuff that's a non-sequitur. FDR isn't being honored for the internment. In fact, it's generally regarded as a massive stain on his Presidency. But that's still completely and utterly different than statues and monuments that honor Confederate soldiers and generals for actually fighting to maintain the institution of slavery! "a lot of people" = a very small minority of students that attended the school. And their complaints didn't go anywhere for decades until school faculty and administrators got involved and continued pushing the issue, despite court rulings, ncaa findings, etc. But whatever, it's old history now and there's no going back. Yes, obviously FDR and the Founding Fathers are different from the confederate generals and soldiers. I'm not arguing that. But it's a massive stain on his presidency that, from my recollection being at the monument, isn't mentioned anywhere. Why not? If you're not going to remove his memorials, at least mention it. Point it out.

Native Americans are more worried about food, water, jobs, money, preventing and treating alcohol/drug addiction, etc. than names that people came up with decades and decades ago that have now become part of the general lexicon without the racist connection. However, that doesn't mean it's unreasonable for NA's to be offended or that it's the end of the world if a private company decides to make a change. I think it's unnecessary, but whatever, if they want to do it, go for it. I objected and still object to the U of I's decision to get rid of the Chief, a beloved mascot that was honored and respected, because a few select liberal professors b****ed and whined, but whatever, there's no going back. On the statue issue, I'd like to see the FDR statues/monuments removed. The dude rounded up a bunch of people and put them in camps because they looked different. In the modern era no less. How is no one talking about this?

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 29, 2018 -> 04:49 PM) They got an unprotected lottery pick and a second round pick, a flyer on an all star point guard and Jae Crowder, who sucks now but clearly seemed to be an in-his-prime fairly cheap 14 and 6 guy. And Zizic. Unprotected 1st rounders that are likely top 10 are incredibly valuable. That's not next to nothing. They got a mid to late lottery pick and some warm bodies. Thats next to nothing for a superstar. -

I mean, they gave Kyrie away for next to nothing and he had 2 years left on his deal. Don't underestimate the stupidity of the Cavs franchise. -

ESPN had a fake trade idea between the Cavs and the Bulls: Bulls give up Mirotic and Lopez Cavs give up Love, Shumpert and the Nets pick. It's actually a compelling trade idea for both teams. Cavs would get out of Love's expensive contract (50 million over the next 2 seasons). Lopez gives them a decent rim protector. Niko obviously gives them more shooting. The Bulls get a good player in Love, a bench guy in Shumpert they can drop after next year and another lottery pick. This will never happen because Love is the fall back franchise player when Lebron leaves and that Nets pick is overvalued, but it's an idea. -

Honestly it would be a lynching if Izzo was forced to resign. Maybe even D'Antoni, though I know less of the claims there. I get that there's a point where your program is filled with people accused of doing criminal things, and that becomes the responsibility of the coach bringing those players to the school, but (1) it's not their fault their player does something criminal, (2) it's not fair to bench a guy or suspend a guy just because of an accusation. There's obviously a point where you should act in response to a proven claim or even a highly credible claim, but i'm not sure if that point got crossed. And if these guys have to go, then so do the people in charge at Minnesota. They allowed their serial rapist to continue playing until the last minute. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 02:54 PM) As an Iowa fan, I think it is hilarious how everyone is ripping Fran to shreds. He's a good coach. His defense leaves components to be desired but they have a lot of reasons for this years struggles. Every year under him Iowa has gotten better (up until this year). That said, I think I'm a realist (vs. so many fans who are delusional). I think Rock nailed it: the dude seems like a huge asshole. His tantrums are ridiculous.
