  1. Must be nice to throw like 20 formations at a defense. I feel like the Bears play about 3.
  2. That's a pretty petty gripe, IMO. He editorialized a bit, which is probably wrong, but I'm sure she was less formal in her conversations with him over the phone versus her prepared quotes. Also, just because you tell a reporter not to quote you doesn't mean they violate some ethical or professional rule by doing so. For all we know he/she said no, I can't promise you I won't.
  3. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) But that is kind of what happened... Don't kid yourself, there is a lot of pretty terrible stuff in the Bible that, if someone latched onto, could be (and has been) used for any number of atrocities. NSS has been spot on in this discussion. I'd like a quote of a verse, preferably from the new testament, not something followed 3-4,000 years ago. And a verse that's been followed seriously.
  4. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 09:42 AM) Meyer said it was legit Joe Henrickson says it's legit too. The guy was a top 20 player in the country a couple years ago, then he disappeared out of the AAU/Summer camp circuit so the major sites forgot about him. The transfers worry me a bit. That's a lot of moving around. Hopefully Groce doesn't pull a Weber and get a guy that he doesn't really want just to appease the fanbase with a recruit. Richmond 2.0 would suck.
  5. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 22, 2014 -> 03:18 PM) I might get the Watch_Dogs DLC after I finish Shadow of Mordor. Aiden is just...so bad. Meanwhile, Shadow of Mordor is so perfect. I've dropped 8 hours in and I forgot to do the missions for a while. The Nemesis system is just so addicting. So I picked up SoM. The reviews were right: it's Assassins Creed and Arkham Asylum set in LotR. Pretty awesome a few hours in.
  6. Let's talk about the source material, not the people that supposedly follow it.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 09:26 AM) Eh, i'm iffy on this. They absorbed the churches into their organization to keep from having to fight them int he 1930s but they really didn't push Christian ideals in any way. They got people to tolerate them or look the other way but they really were a distinct philosophical strain from Christianity. Antisemitism of course does have a long history associated with the Christian church, but again, this strain was something different. You don't read the writings or speeches of that era and hear that many references to God. Hell, I'd say we hear more about God from our presidents in this country. Many times by force and oppression. While I'm sure some churches opened their arms, many others did not, especially when word came out that the Nazi's were killing off disabled/handicapped people.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 09:00 AM) "they're a bunch of heathens" was part of the rationale for Manifest Destiny. But Christians never said "so let's kill them." Again, this isn't 100% of Islamic followers and there can be different interpretations and supposed context that explains it (e.g., some would argue jihad is all about defensive wars), but the Qaran is much more direct about using violence. It's not "don't worship false idols," it's "Prophet! Rouse the believers to wage war. If there are twenty amongst you, patient and persevering, they will subdue two hundred: if a hundred, they will subdue a thousand of the disbelievers: for these are a people without understanding."
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 24, 2014 -> 08:16 AM) Religious conversion of American Indians well into the late 19th century wasn't exactly rosy. And I already brought up the LRA, which operates today. For that matter, you can go back to the late 20th century for the Protestant-Catholic fights in Ireland. Getting others to convert is one thing. Defeating/fighting all non-believers for their non-beliefs is another.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) We're talking about a 20-year program here, so social media isn't relevant for a lot of it. Either way, it's just another glaring example of how much "student" there is in "student-athlete" 99% of student athletes are, in fact, students first and won't have jobs in sports after they're done playing.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) The Pope sanctioned the crusades. Pope's have done a lot of stupid s*** "under the banner" of Christianity. Doesn't mean it's in accordance with the tenants of the religion. For centuries Pope's were the most corrupt, immoral people around. And obviously it depends on translation, but the Qaran tells followers to fight non-believers in the name of Allah and keep fighting until Allah is the only god left. I don't think there's a similar passage anywhere in the Old Testament and certainly not in the New.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 10:10 AM) In a larger sense to your point that its undeniable Islam is currently having a larger issue with this, it's also worth asking whether that is something inherent to the religion or it's the result of specific political situations (poverty, unemployment, the resource curse, corrupt governments, money used to finance extremists) taking place in those countries at present. Situations which, I might add, we encourage in many ways. Ha, of course, it's our fault! I guess we got what we deserved?
  13. "Done under the banner" is different from being a major tenant of the religion. I don't deny that Christianity has been used by people to start wars and battles. But that's not really a major tenant of the religion. Now I grant you whether jihad is a major tenant of Islam is somewhat arguable and many will say it's not, but at least it's an argument. A war for the homeland and persecution of non-believers or being anti-black is not in any Christian teachings that I'm aware of.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) They called it "crusades" and "inquisitions". Neither really based on religious doctrine though.
  15. I'm not saying followers of other religions don't use violence, but non-Jews/Christians don't join the cause to kill non-believers of that religion. Nor do those religions really have a "jihad" component to their beliefs. Jihad isn't read by some to mean violence, but I think most agree it's linked to military involvement against "oppressors."
  16. Minnesota got a big penalty a decade ago for like 20 students. This is 3100 over an 18 year period. UNC should be losing banners, vacating seasons and banning themselves from postseason play for a few years. Sucks that Illinois can't be named the 2005 champs if the title is vacated.
  17. Comcast SportsNet is running the Illinois-Zona game from 2005. What an amazing team. It was so fun to watch them play.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 22, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) A team like Cleveland is also going to be able to play more help/recovery defense with guys like Verajo, LeBron, and company behind Irving. That just opens stuff up. If Rose can do what he did the other night, that's going to be difficult for Cleveland to recover from assuming McBuckets or Mirotic or Dunleavy are hitting outside shots. And then they'll put Lebron on Rose.
  19. QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 22, 2014 -> 04:50 PM) your first response ????? but I agree with your second. there are many millions of intelligent people who can see the difference, believe me. this is soooo wasted..... shoot yourself and leave others alone. I was responding to NSS post and Balta's repost and it isn't about religion but about a sick person. Both are causes here.
  20. That's such a cop-out though. If you're a violent person with violent tendencies who needs an outlet there are other ways. Why is Islam such an attractive option? It shouldn't be, but it is and has been for quite a while. When's the last time someone converted to Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, etc. simply for the purpose of killing that religion's non-believers? You're talking hundreds and hundreds of years. That's an antiquated move and it's no wonder it's strongest in the most ass-backwards part of the world.
  21. QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 22, 2014 -> 04:41 PM) I agree. now for my rant. I can see the hatred that the Islam's has again the USA. USA is soo freaking evil that we even welcome women into the work force and give them the right to vote. but why Canada??? what did Canada do that was so wrong, win the Stanley Cup the most. come on. this stupid craze militant Islam's. I mean, he was Canadian, and everyone who isn't Muslim praying to Allah five times a day is an infidel so... geographic proximity is the answer you're looking for.
  22. I'm tempted to pick that up even though I'll probably never get to play it as thoroughly as it's intended to be played. $33 bucks right now on a bundle site through Steam.
  23. Both I think. Noah said it was a "pain/maintenance" issue.
  24. KC Johnson tweeted that Noah is going to wear a knee brace all season. Apparently his recovery is not going as expected.
  25. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 21, 2014 -> 05:10 PM) Not sure if anyone saw the business insider but it talked a lot about how the Bears offense is extremely predictable. Packers players indicated when we line up in certain sets, we always go to same area and same play and that led to a pick. The other issue brought up by Miami was the fact that Jay is staring down wideouts is a more concerning issue from the Jay Cutler perspective as he isn't a young player in this league and at that point it is totally unacceptable. I do think he's done a nice job going to other options and made some nice throws on secondary and third reads, however, we clearly haven't seen many guys outside of our top playmakers make plays have catches. Productivity below those guys has been so minimal vs. when you look at a Rodgers or Manning who spread the ball all over the place. Some of Cutler's peripheral stats, however, indicate improvement. His 67.3 completion percentage through seven games this year is better than any of his previous single-season marks. His 2.7 interception percentage beats all but one of his previous single-season clips, and his 14 touchdowns have him on pace for a career-high. Great, he's a slightly better version of his very mediocre self. With the weapons he's been given the last couple of years, that's just not enough improvement.
