Sadly in this country, and particularly this state and city, "he's rich" is worse than "this dude straight up lied to you AND is taking your money away!!"

Golfing Thread
QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 10:32 AM) Anyone play any golf over the holiday weekend? I had interesting rounds of 85/92/79 Oh the joys of golf... I played yesterday. Shot a "96" (couple of foot wedges I didn't count). One of the worst all around rounds in I don't even know how long. I've had some 90 scores here and there over the years, but that's generally due to some real bad driving in water/OB or just not being able to putt at all to save my life. This was a case of not being able to hit anything well all day. Even when I hit perfect drives 250-260 to the center of the fairway, i'd chunk the 2nd shot 10-15 yards short or scold it 10-15 yards past. I think I did that at least 4 times. I was in bunkers all day. My pitches were consistently short. I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. Absolutely miserable. My bro in law had a sweet shot though. Off the green about 10-15 yards, maybe 20-25 yards to the pin. He worm burns a pitch he was trying to flop right at the stick. This thing was going 50 mph and would have gone 30 yards over the other side of the green. Instead, he nails the flag stick about 3 inches above the hole perfectly square and it drops straight in. I've never seen anything like it before.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 29, 2014 -> 12:01 PM) Let's all think back to last winter, and having the Bears play some games in January and February. Terrible idea. I don't want to watch snow football in below zero weather, even if I'm not at the game. I'd rather have a good product out there to watch on TV. Couldn't disagree more. The best weekend of football last year was watching 5 white-out games at once (Sunday Ticket woo!). Don't give me that "perfect conditions" nonsense. The WORST games are easily dome games. By far. About as stale as a viewing experience as you can get. Give me crazy weather. The crazier the better. It's memorable, it's nostalgic and it's fun.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 29, 2014 -> 11:50 AM) I don't think ratings are bad in September, but I think they would be better in January. Even a 1% difference is a lot of money. The NFL doesn't have to worry about viewership like that though. They have their deals with CBS/NBC/FOX already. So if 1% less people watch on one weekend out of the entire season, I don't think they care much. The networks might, and I guess they could complain, but really the NFL games are the biggest draws out there. They already demand top dollar.

QUOTE (TRU @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 03:27 PM) If I had to guess I would say they are just using domestic violence because of the ray rice thing but this would have to be all kind of assault right? 6 game suspension for shoving your wife at home, what if I punch some woman I just met at a club? Nothing? Or what if you cheat on your wife (twice) and she attacks you both times but the police are called? Is that worthy of a lifetime ban?

But I thought Notre Dame has the most stringent academic requirements of any football program ever? edit: I guess to be fair it's not just graduation rates and academic assistance they factor into that ranking. They take into account scandals, arrests, etc. into that vertical slot. Still, pretty much kills the theory that ND is some holier-than-thou beacon of all that is right in college football. Also, LOL at Penn State. And Alabama, Florida State and Oklahoma.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) SIU had it's share of hotties, like any school, and definitely had it's shares of Uggos as well. The key is finding the hottie that's friends with a lot of Uggos. The hottie who doesn't realize she's a hottie. That's Mrs. Jenks. Outkicked my coverage quite a bit as a result of that.

Ukraine
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) I wasn't trying to say that holding all of Ukraine would be like holding Crimea, just pointing out the huge international economic problems increasingly overt military actions will pose for Russia proper. Here's an interesting read on the effect of the prior sanctions now and going forward: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gregsatell/201...vladimir-putin/

Ukraine
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 10:26 AM) Russia was able to take Crimea and actually have a reasonable claim to it that helped limit the violence. Right now, it's the Ukranian army fighting a resistance in the areas closest to Russia where there is a Russian speaking population, but those areas would be divided even if Russia tried to take them over. If Russia invades, they'll wind up both fighting the Ukranian army for the territory and turning the portions of the local population who are Ukranian into fighters against Russia. I was under the impression that the areas closest to Russia were very much pro-Russia over Ukraine. Maybe they don't take the entire country, but they can take the part that considers itself Russian, just like Crimea. If that's not the end game, what's the point of fighting along side the rebels in Ukranian territory?

Ukraine
I was wondering the same thing. Putin could take Ukraine in a matter of weeks I would guess. So if he really wanted it, why not just go for it? The international community is going to condemn him and then forget about it a week later.

Help me buy a car for the first time!
QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 03:54 PM) Sure that makes sense but it can also depend on how long you have left to pay on the loans as well. If I have a higher interest loan that won't be paid off for another 4 years and a lower interest loan that will be payed off within a year, I'm going to pay off the lower interest one first. Then I can take the money I was using for that loan and add it on the higher interest one until it's gone. Then if there's a month where I need that extra money for something else, it's there. I paid off a car loan in less than a year simply because I was sick of the bank screwing up my payments. Now I have "extra" money to pay for other things. You should check the math on that. You might be right. You might also be costing yourself more interest concentrating on a lower interest rate, shorter term loan. The general rule is you always attack the highest interest rate, shortest term loan first.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Wanted to follow up this post with this editorial in the NYT about judicial immunity for government entities and often times even government actors and how it makes holding people accountable for their abuses very difficult. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/27/opinion/...-share&_r=0 The entities have immunity, but not for willful wanton conduct. And while the individual officers also sometimes have complete immunity, they're probably not paying out money anyway. It's always going to be the municipality. And they're more important since they have insurance money. edit: the prosecutor immunity is a little troubling. I get the need for it, but there was a case in Texas where a guy spent like 30 years behind bars and it was all due to the prosecutor deliberately withholding evidence. It was something simple, like an evidence locker record, which would have cleared the guy. But the prosecutor hid it on purpose because they had no other suspects or lead in the murder and he wanted that conviction. The prosecutor eventually became a judge too.

Washington Football Franchise team name discussion
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) I think this photo does a good job illustrating how hokey "the chief" was. I never really cared much one way or the other when I was there. I'll never understand why some people get so emotionally attached to team names, logos, or mascots, though. This is just ridiculous: Sure it was hokey, but he does make a good point that the Chief was never used like a mascot, running around the field trying to make people laugh. He was a symbol 99% of the time, and a halftime piece the remaining 1%. It just frustrates me when people claim it's all racist and a big insult when clearly the students/alumni/fans ADORED the Chief. They loved every minute of it. It's been 7 years since his last performance and the crowd still goes nuts when he randomly shows up. They don't do that because they like seeing a guy make fun of American Indians, they like it because they like the Chief and the entire tradition behind it, including their own personal memories of it. And yes, fans can be really stupid.
