NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 02:39 PM) Even if this were true, which it wasn't, it just means that would have been the perfect time to figure this out. Exactly. Like I said, i'm sure the cap gurus could have figured out how to make the numbers work. And it's not like OKC got a ton in return. The got a decent Martin (role player) for one season, Lamb (a project) a #11 and a couple other worthless picks. They weren't looking to replace Harden NOW. They were looking to keep the team at the same level while working towards the future.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 02:14 PM) If anyone believes the Lakers would genuinely have given up Kobe, I have a bridge to sell them...but yes, that one was the talk. And if that one could have happened and didn't then that was a mistake. Yes, Harden would look good on the Bulls, but as was just pointed out, the Bulls simply did not have an expiring contract to offer up for him while the Rockets did. The Thunder wouldn't have taken on Deng or Noah because that would have put them in Luxury tax territory this year. They made offers, so they were clearly serious. Harden could have been had for whatever price the Bulls were willing to give. They could have worked something out. Taj and the Bobcats for example. You can honestly argue that the Bulls have done everything they can to maximize their roster? GMAB. They hold onto their assets for way too long hoping things pan out and then they don't. We're going through the same routine right now. They just got lucky with the Rose pick.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 02:00 PM) name a single one. Harden would look pretty f'n good on the Bulls team, and i'm sure the cap gurus could have figured out the appropriate set of players to get it done. I don't have a good enough NBA memory to know what major guys have been put up as trade bait the last several years, but there have been plenty. It's not like major players don't get traded in this league. And even if those trades weren't publicly discussed, the fact is the Bulls COULD have been making calls to see what it would take to get certain guys with the assets they have. And all of the insiders have said the Bulls just don't do that. Wasn't Kobe at one point seriously considering a move and Chicago was a team on his list and the Bulls refused to give up Deng?

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 01:45 PM) First of all...the role of the "He" in this discussion changed a couple years ago. I'm not sure if that even registered. Secondly...I'm still waiting for someone to tell me what deal he missed out on. Harden was the best response and even then the Bulls couldn't offer salary cap relief. Are y'all jealous that we didn't get Joe Johnson or something like that? If they don't have the appropriate contracts to deal then it's still on the Bulls front office for making those s***ty deals to begin with. Some guy was on Mully and Hanley this morning talking about the Bulls since 1998, how they've basically had a 3-4 year plan ever since. And every single time it doesn't pan out. It started to get me really pissed off how the Bulls can successfully sell "hope" to the fan base. Here we are yet again, hoping that Mirotic is everything we've been told and the Bobcats lottery pick is going to get something decent. Otherwise we have passed up many potential deals to make THIS team better, banking on what COULD be in a couple of seasons.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) Oh I think you misunderstand. I definitely think Thibs is a guy that can take a subpar team and make them average/good/great. The question is can he take a good/great team and win a championship. In the history of the NBA, I believe only 30 coaches have won a championship. Of those 30, 13 have won multiple. So its just a very very elite club, and most coaches never get there. I think Thibs can get there, but I am just not willing to put him there yet. LET'S WAIT UNTIL HE HAS A FULL HEALTHY TEAM FOR f***'S SAKE. The first year he had that the Bulls went to the ECF!!!

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 11:43 AM) Rose's minutes are generally fine. Its the fact that 2 years ago he really never seemed right and then he got injured in like the last minute of a playoff game. It could be completely coincidental, it could be like being struck by lightning, I just dont see why people wouldnt want to critically look at what happened and ask: "Is there something we can do to prevent this in the future" Maybe there isnt, maybe nothing can be done. I just dont understand why so many people want to stubbornly refuse to even acknowledge that maybe something can be done to try and ensure that the Bulls are 100% healthy going into the playoff. Its like even mentioning the idea that somehow Thibs could improve immediately brings out every die hard defender who cant even accept that maybe Thibs isnt perfect. Its just odd for me. ?? He looked amazing that first game. He was like 25-9-9. Edit: and I think people defend Thibs because he completely turned around a franchise that was f***ing terrible for years.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
The "regression" was due to not having their star player, who prior to his freak acl tear accident had already missed a good chunk of the season and wasn't playing a lot of minutes. So the argument that he was overworked makes no sense. I would like Thibs to pull guys when they're up 20 with 4 minutes to go. I don't think this team, of sub-30 year olds, should go the Spurs route and purposefully sit out games to rest up for the playoffs. The Spurs are battle hardened vets. The Bulls are not.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
Nor is there any evidence that the injuries suffered by the players are due to being over worked. That's just a convenient talk-radio type of conclusion. Rose's ACL could have given out in practice. Deng's wrist/hand injuries came from being hit in a flukey way (and made worse by his refusal to get it fixed operatively). Noah's planter faciitis may or may not be related, but I sincerely doubt it. The man runs for a living so if he's predisposed to that problem it would have popped up eventually.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) Because he's the white LeBron. He's the white AJ Pierzynski in that you hate him unless he's on your team. But I just don't think he's very good. He can get loose balls but that's about it.

Engagement Rings
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 01:30 PM) The suit...what did you guys wear? The rental tux? Buy a tux? Buy a suit? Go with a tie? Bowtie? I'm thinking I'm going to buy something...just not sure if I want to go with a tux or with a suit. A suit I will actually use again. A tux will sit in my closet and collect dust most likely. So I am leaning towards a suit... Tux's are cheap. 100-200 bucks at most. A decent suit is gonna run you 2-3 times that easy. edit: and let her pick what you wear.

2013 TV Thread
It was amazing to see all these douche-bag meat heads act like little Cinderella princesses/drama queens. And God, the amount of "i'm so in love, this is the happiest moment in my life that i will cherish until the day I die" talk was vomit-inducing. I honestly hope those "guys" come back to the real world and are shamed by every woman they meet for the rest of their lives.

Y2HH is clearly in the denial phase....6 years later.

The Wire is better than the Sopranos
QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 11:26 AM) I was actually pissed the killed off Bell. That guy should've stayed the whole series. Plenty for him to do. His fall allowed Marlo to come up though. And he was a good character too. Man, it's been a few years since i've watched The Wire. I might have to start a re-watch soon.

The Wire is better than the Sopranos
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 10:51 AM) The Wire featured my favorite television character to date... McNulty? Bunk? Omar? Stringer? Oh god, please don't say Ziggy (single-handedly ruined Season 2 for me)

So, I stayed in the living room last night as my wife watched The Bachelorette. Holy s*** do I feel like a dumber, more awful person this morning for having watched that show for 2 hours.

The Wire is better than the Sopranos
QUOTE (Joxer_Daly @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) Ok, so, if I was going to watch all the episodes of the Sopranos or The Wire from start to finish, which show should I do first. I've only ever seen a very few episodes of the Sopranos too. I would say The Wire.

The Wire is better than the Sopranos
I don't understand how people think it was open ended. That's people wanting to believe that Tony continued to win at life. The entire last season/last few episodes were devoted to "when you get whacked, everything goes silent." And that's exactly what happened.

2013 Video Game Thread
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 1, 2013 -> 11:51 PM) It's not my favorite game ever, but it's the game I'm telling the most people to play. I think everyone can enjoy what's good about this game whereas some games I've loved are too 'gamey' with cliche gameplay elements that don't appeal to everyone. This game has those, but they seem to fit better and, oh yeah, the tension. It's so much more tense than any other game I've ever played. Yeah the intensity was great. It took me back to high school when the Resident Evil games were still good.

Ugh, sports radio is insufferable this morning. You would think Derrick Rose just decided to sign with another team the way they're covering this non-story.

Yeah I liked the ending, even though I did think my cable had just cut out.

2013 Video Game Thread
Finished The Last of Us. What a game. I'd give it a 9/10, but I can understand why some people didn't think it was GOAT-worthy. All minor complaints for an otherwise excellent game. I still think it's a smidge behind Uncharted 2 as the best of the generation for the PS3, but pretty close. Naughty Dog knocked it out of the park again.

The Wire is better than the Sopranos
I think both are slightly overrated (people forgot they actually had bad seasons) but I'd probably choose The Wire over the Sopranos. Both are excellent though. If Breaking Bad has an awesome ending it'll be #1 in my book.

Trayvon Martin
Interesting twist I didn't know (and find a little hard to believe): Zimmerman didn't know Martin was dead until a cop told him.
