QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 6, 2014 -> 09:00 PM) Kevin Smith might not make the 40 man roster since Flowers Nieto and Phegley aren't going anywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if a few teams would put him on their active roster next year. I agree, it will be tough to justify putting him on the roster unless they dump Phegley some place else. I think that one of the two will start next season as Flowers backup and Nieto will head to AAA to get everyday AB's. Flowers will be 29 next season, Smith and Phegley will both be 27.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
harfman77 replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 12:32 PM) The fact that we are giving Beckham ABs while major-league-ready Semien wastes his time in Charlotte is the most asinine decision Hahn ever made. Semien didn't exactly set the world on fire when he was up here earlier and hasn't done anything since going back to Charlotte to make you think that he needs to be on the ML roster right now. Nothing wrong with giving him more time to work through some things and keep his service time clock from ticking, its not like Beckham is the one thing standing between this team and the WS. Might as well play for draft position at this point. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 11:31 AM) The problem is that the Cubs aren't going to get away with trading Almora/Alcantara/McKinney...they're going to have to touch their core four or whatever they call them, core five really with Russell now. Alcantara would have to pass through waivers, and that wouldn't happen. I think a Russell/Edwards package plus some filler would make sense for both sides. I am not sure that is enough for Philly though, especially since they have so much dead money in Lee and Howard.

This is Hahns plan to fix the bullpen. Get Dunn to re-sign on the cheap, bring back Casper Wells, and get Leury Garcia some more innings. Seriously though, good move by Robin to give the fans a reward at the end of a blowout and letting the guys have a little fun.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) This years Abreu/Tanaka seem to be Yasmani Tomas and Kenta Maeda.....Wonder if they'll be in on 1 or both of those guys. Maeda scares me a lot though. They are not on the same scale. Tomas is bascially a younger version of Viciedo and Maeda is more of a back of the rotation guy. There are just not the same echelon of players available this season (yet).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 01:36 PM) So what is accurate? Eyeball test.

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) If a player is Designated for Assignment, is that similar to reconcilable waivers, meaning, if a player is DFA'd, and then claimed, the player's current team can simply turn him over to the new team OR work out a trade? IF they are DFA'ed the team has ten days to make a roster move, which would include placing a player on waivers to see if they can clear waivers and be re-assigned. However, since he will likely not clear waivers the Marlins can work out a deal with the team that claims him or pull him back. If they pull him back they can place him on waivers again, though they would be irrevocable. Since the non-waiver trade deadline has passed, their options are to place him through waivers or to release him.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) No idea why they'd trade Turner for Danks They won't. Maybe someone like Rondon though.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 12:39 PM) If I had to bet, I bet it means John Danks hits waivers tomorrow, that way any deal can happen in between his starts. Thats if he hasn't already cleared waivers. Turner may have already cleared at this point as well.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 12:03 PM) So you leave out Petricka, who has probably been our best arm in the pen and is probably one of the rare locks for next season (maybe Putnam as well) and list the other crap? I'm going to assume you just forgot about him. Yes, thanks for the catch.
-
They are speculating that he may be part of a trade. Perhaps the target that RH has been after?

I imagine going into next season the staff looks like: SP Sale SP Quintana SP FA - Masterson ? SP Danks SP Noesi Pretty solid starting staff, nothing exceptional but enough to keep the team in every game LR Surkamp MR - Leesman MR Putnam LOOGY - FA- Mijares? SU Webb CP - FA trade fodder - Perez, Johnson, Bailey? Jones is likely to miss all of next season and will slide in after that. I think in August the staff looks more like SP Sale SP Quintana SP FA - Masterson/Volquez ? SP Rodon SP Noesi LR - Surkamp MR - Leesman MR - Putnam LOOGY - Snodgress SU - Goldberg CP - Webb

QUOTE (Timmy U @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 10:14 PM) Thompson is already on the 40 man. The guys I have are Wilkins, Kevan Smith, Ravelo, Saladino, Snodgrass, Bassitt, and Montas. I think Micah Johnson has one more year, which is why you may not see him up this year. Slots will be opening from Konerko and Dunn and Mitchell, Molina, Taylor Thompson, Jordan Danks, Cleto, and De Los Santos are all possible/probable to be outrighted off the 40 man roster.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 10:31 AM) More than the Sox would be willing to afford. He's a huge building block in that Atlanta outfield. Yeah, I can't see them moving one of their core pieces.
-
The team is going to need to find a LH power bat somewhere. To me the realistic options are re-sign Dunn or buy low on Domonic Brown or LoMo. Alvarez will probably be moved across the diamond after they non-tender Ike Davis.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 01:04 PM) JR's interview on the score was interesting as well. Not only was he pretty curt throughout ("That's not why I came on the show, next question."), but he was talking about acquiring a SP. However, he did throw in the words back-end in front of starter. He talks about how he hates the idea of signing pitchers to long term deals (not surprising) and the likelihood of the Sox signing Shields, seemingly everyone's favorite FA pitcher, is very slim. That being said, would anyone be surprised if the Sox are involved the in Kenta Maeda sweepstakes? Maeda is more of a 3 or 4 in the MLB he is a RH version of Tsuyoshi Wada. Shohei Otani is the next big thing from Japan, he just turned 20 and almost bypassed the JPPL altogether and came overseas as an 18 year old. He is currently playing both ways as an OF and SP. http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...el-kenta-maeda/

QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 12:37 PM) taking a look at this scenario, I never thought we will in position to compete this yr. with the addition of the players and the pride of the players, we came pretty damn close. we have something like 30-40 mil I sp = + /- 20 mil dh = + / - 13-15 mil rp = + /- 5-8 mil total is 40 + / - is dv going to dh or play of. now everything being equal lets assume danks is not traded. Which DH option are they going to pursue? The LH options available are Adam Dunn, Kendrys Morales, Victor Martinez, Carlos Pena, and Pablo Sandoval. Given that landscape, I think they re-up Dunn.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 12:47 PM) I do blame Rich on being over confident on what we had to start the season. first his trust was miss placed on Felipe Paulino, now I believe they manufactured an injury to shelve him for the remainder of the season and avoid further embarrassment. howver on the flip side, who would've thought that Johnson would pitch bad. next the injury to the pen is in no way his fault. the lack of hitting, Aza, DV and Gordo who would have thought they would have been so bad. cat - flowers, I never thought he would be better than a 250 hitter. but the lack of hitting from other position magnified everyone who was not hitting. injury to another key player Avi, with the backup not hitting, this injury hurt. Hahn job to have enuf players to plug in esp in pitching I think Hahn knew exactly what he had going into the season. The goal was to buy low on guys like Cleto, Putnam, Paulino, Downs, and Lindstron at the beginning of the season and try to establish some value in them so that they could be dealt as the Cubs have done with Hammels and Feldman the last couple seasons. They either didn't pan out or were injured but it is worth a gamble in a season when you don't expect to contend to take some pieces off the trash heap and see if you can shine them up and sell them off. I believe the team as constructed has outplayed the front offices expectations for the season with the play of Gillaspie and Abreu surpassing expectations. Hahn has been amassing pitching both in the draft and as the pieces he receives back in trades. He picked up what could be to ML contributors in the Peavy deal and they have gone heavy after pitching in the last couple drafts. The pieces are being put into place, and the performance of the team this year may have accelerated the timeline so that the team feels comfortable in making investments in the off-season to go for it next year.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 10:51 AM) They aren't. We shouldn't be thinking playoffs this year. Realistically, unless Verlanders arm falls off after he runs int Miguel Cabrera, which knocks his legs off, we shouldn't be expecting to win in 2015 either. I really don't think this team is that far away from competing. One more SP and one more bat and this team is right in the thick of things. Oakland is all in this season and will come back down to earth next season when they lose Lowrie, Hammel, Lester, Gomes, and Callaspo to FA and then will probably trade Samardjzia to fill some of the holes on their ML roster and farm. The Sox should be in wildcard contention all season next year. If the Tigers lose Scherzer and Martinez the Sox will be right in it for the division race as well, and perhaps even if they don't lose those guys. You don't want to take away from the long term plan to compete now, but, the farm system is starting to produce excess pieces that can be used to upgrade the ML roster.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 2, 2014 -> 09:29 AM) Your "arb clock" starts the first day you are added to the 25-man roster. If he came up September 1 he would accumulate 28 days of service time. If he starts next season on the roster, those 28 days won't matter. If he starts next season back in AAA, then the cutoff to call him back up and avoid "Super-2" would be pushed back by 28 days. If he's up in September, he would not need to be on the 25 man roster.
-
Right now he is worth hanging on to, he costs very little and has some upside. If there is something better that comes along then you take that into account, but much like bullpen bingo, he is like a lottery ticket that could pay off.
-
I am thinking it was a deal involving Danks and Murphy. The Sox were supposedly making calls to the Yankess back in ST on Murphy.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 08:29 PM) How do you suggest fixing the bullpen? Taking another chance on guys like Belly and Downs? I think some of the Sox starting pitching prospects end up in the bullpen. Leesman and Snodgress probably end up in the pen in the not too distant future add in Hansen and Goldberg and there are quite a few internal options that can be tried next season to see what the true holes in the pen are going forward. From that list you can take a flier on whoever is willing to take a one year deal, possibly a couple buy low guys like Mijares and Hochevar to see if you can turn them into anything at the deadline next season.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 02:29 PM) But the rest of their moves they acquired a bunch of Win now players without the pitching staff do come close to doing so They have really re-tooled their roster to make a run next year. They need to add back a starting pitcher, but will have loads of money to chase Lester and Scherzer both after the season. Moving Drew lets them put Bogaerts at SS the rest of the season and try out Cecchini/Middlebrooks/Holt at 3B options C Vazquez 1B Napoli 2B Pedroia SS Bogaerts 3B Holt/Cecchini/Middlebrooks RF Cespedes CF Victorino LF Craig DH Ortiz/Craig SP FA Pitcher 1 SP FA Pitcher 2/Ranaudo SP Joe Kelly SP Ryan Dempster SP Allen Webster

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
harfman77 replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 02:47 PM) Yankees pick up Stephen Drew.....Stephen Drew can be moved easily but Beckham can't? Amazing For Kelly Johnson...not sure that is even worth making a trade.
