I’m completely fine with standing pat at the deadline. What I’m not fine with is not addressing the holes in RF and SP (other than adding Keuchel) last offseason. That needs to be addressed next winter.

I thought Grandal’s framing has been average this season? So why does he get the big bump from -0.1 to 0.6 based on framing?

There’s no question the front office has to do a better job in free agency moving forward. They get the SSS excuse this season with a few of these guys acquired last winter but this is a pattern at this point.

Said it a couple weeks ago, this will be one of the biggest storylines for the Sox heading into the playoffs at the end of this month. “Who will catch Lucas Giolito in Game 1 of the playoffs?”

Which I still don’t understand. I’ve been told Grandal’s framing metrics are average so far this season. So why does fangraphs give him such a big bump in WAR but baseball reference doesn’t?

This is the third straight season the Sox have started a negative WAR player in RF. Gosh, I’d be happy to only get a 3 WAR starter out of that position instead. Castellanos isn’t perfect by any means but if he was he wouldn’t have signed for less than Grandal either. edit: oh, he’s also considerably younger than Grandal. By the time he hits free agency again, he will still be younger than Grandal is today.

I’ve already had this debate with ChiSox but I wanted an upgrade at either RF or SP before catcher. Castellanos was my preference for RF and Ryu my preference for SP. The starting rotation was so RH heavy that it seemed like Keuchel and Ryu were the perfect compliments to balance it out. Also would give more time for the young guys like Kopech, Cease, Dunning, etc to develop.

But I’m not the one arguing that McCann is “elite”. And past performance is no guarantee for future success. I don’t care what Grandal and Encarnación did for teams prior to the White Sox. I care about how they perform for the White Sox. I realize you often pay for past performance when you participate in free agency but the front office has to improve in free agency moving forward. Keuchel was a great signing but I wish they signed another starting pitcher last winter.

The only problem is the Sox signed him to be their catcher for this season and the next three, not the past five.

The one trait other than OBP that everyone talked up about Grandal was his pitch framing. That should be a loud trait because you’d see him stealing strikes/strikeouts for our pitchers regularly. But I’m still waiting for that to happen.

The advanced stat nerds hate Colome but his save percentage with the Sox has been great and that’s what I care about most from a closer. Pretty sure most people would consider Josh Hader the top closer in MLB right now. Josh has 8 blown saves in 53 opportunities since the start of last season. Colome has just 4 blown saves in 41 opportunities.

In the postseason and even at the start of this season (because of the circumstances) I get but not right now.

I’d rather earn the wild card and advance to the World Series than win the division and get bounced in the first round. Now of course I’d rather win the division than not but this season of all seasons it provides very little advantage in the postseason. I’m just happy to be watching meaningful White Sox baseball in September/October again.

Grandal stealing strikes again

You’re building it up as more than it is. Both teams will look different next season. Maybe it’s just me but I’m not overly concerned about the Twins next year if the Sox are relatively healthy and improve this offseason the way I expect them to.

Odds are pretty low that the Sox face the Twins in the playoffs.
