QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 10:57 PM) I think Gonzales might just be speculating there. Birmingham makes a lot more sense for a guy like Beckham. I don't know. I thought AA would make more sense for Viciedo as well, but we sent him to Charlotte. And I think Viciedo is a lot more raw than Beckham.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 10:54 PM) That makes perfect sense. It also gives us the chance to send him to Charlotte on a rehab while we decide how our roster looks and if he we really want him around. yep. I'm thinking he can make the team as a bench player though, especially if Anderson becomes a starter. We could use a right handed power bat off the bench, considering Betemit is very similar to Jose Valentin in that he's a switch hitter but really can't hit right handed. I'm curious as to what our bench will look like. Part of it will depend on how many pitchers we carry. For now, I'll assume we'll keep 12 pitchers. -I'm pretty sure Corky has the backup catcher spot locked up. -Anderson seems as a lock to make the team, and sadly it looks like one of Wise or Owens is as well. CF will likely be a platoon. -Betemit will make the team as the utility infielder. -This spot will be tough. Do you go with another infielder in Lillibridge or Nix, or do you go with perhaps Kroeger, who has really shown an ability to hit this spring. Personally, I want Kroeger, but you can make a strong case for Lillibridge to backup the MI and most importantly SS. Nix as well wouldn't be a bad choice. Perhaps with his health in question, we can sneak him down to Charlotte.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 10:55 PM) I didn't see Williams today. I know he had a nice run of scoreless innings before today. Poreda got shelled the other day. Not sure what they want to do with him. The thing with Poreda though, the club likely wants him to focus on throwing sliders and his secondary pitches. With someone like Williams, it's likely the club just wants him to go out and see what he has. And after seeing him today, he's extremely mediocre and it's easy to tell why he is a 34 year old journey man who hasn't even pitched in the majors the past 3 years.
-
Personally, after watching him pitch today, I don't think Williams has an edge over anyone.
-
In that case, we should put Nix on the DL and go from there.

I was looking at his stats, and he's averaging over 2 K's per inning! I'll take this guy over 500 foot homerun high school kid anyday. -
Why wouldn't Nix be retained? Is he out of options or something? At the very least, he can be sent to Charlotte and play until he is back to 100%, and if we feel Getz needs some more help, especially vs. lefties, we can call up Nix.
-
Hopefully... 1. Getz, 2B (he's gonna have to be a full time starter, vs. lefty and righty. I'll be pissed if we see Ozzie do a dumbass thing and bat BA or Fields leadoff vs. lefties) 2. Ramirez, SS (Ozzie better not make us go through another year with Pierzynski in the 2 hole) 3. Quentin, LF 4. Dye, RF 5. Thome, DH 6. Konerko, 1B 7. Pierzynski, C 8. Fields, 3B 9. Anderson, CF I'm not expecting much out of Getz his rookie year, but I know he's a hell of a lot better than either Wise or Owens.

I hope one day teams will stop negotiating with Boras. I got no problem with someone wanting to get a lot of money, but this is getting ridiculous. There really needs to be a set salary for each slot that can't be broken. The NFL needs that as well. -
No surprise. And I'm sure even if Nix did stay healthy, we would have likely just seen a platoon of Getz and Nix at 2B.

Gwynn Jr. is a really good defensive outfielder. Hitting is a different story though. I'd still prefer Gwynn on the roster over Owens or Wise.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Mar 13, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Aga3...o&type=lgns Interesting take on Prior. I still believe that it is an extreme amount of bad luck that has ruined Prior. I especially don't believe that his mechanics were too perfect.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) Kevin Youkilis is done for the WBC with an ankle injury. It's supposedly a mild sprain with some inflammation in the Achilles. This is getting f***ing ridiculous, Terry Francona is going to strangle Bud Selig to death. He didn't want any of his players participating in this sham in the first place now his 2 MVP candidates from last year are banged up. This is what he had to say even before the Youkilis injury and remember, employees of Major League Baseball are not allowed to speak ill of the WBC so he had to do a little tip toeing around the subject: I wonder how Frank Wren felt watching Brian McCann, his star catcher who's never played a single professional inning anywhere but catcher, play left field the other night. I'm sure he was overwhelmed with pride for his country. It's funny how everyone agrees it's a great idea but at the same time they also agree that there's no good time for it to be held. Well then, since they are holding it at the beginning of March which is an awful time for this thing, it would have to be constituted as a BAD IDEA. I think it just has more to do with god not liking the red sox.

Lol, USA's pitching staff is beyond terrible. Is Jermey Guthrie seriously the best we can do? Honestly, what the hell is he even doing on the team?

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 08:20 PM) Less work for me I guess. I was assuming I would be hounded for info on him, Beckham & Flowers. Yeah, but would you really consider talking baseball "work"

Damn, I actually liked Hood.

That's too bad... RIP and best wishes to her family.

I personally would have rather had seen how Viciedo would do at Birmingham in the bigger park vs. more talent for a while. But oh well, doesn't make too much of a difference I guess.

QUOTE (Cubano @ Mar 17, 2009 -> 10:41 PM) I do not like the fact that this tournament is solely controlled by MLB. The finals rounds are in the USA for the second time. The games are played with the Rawlings. Only MLB umpire are allowed behind the plate. The rules were made thinking about MLB players first. Japan, Korea and Cuba should say Hell with MLB. None of the other leagues are at the same level of the MLB. Add to the fact a good majority of the players are from the MLB, it only makes sense to use MLB balls with an MLB umpire behind home plate.

Davey Johnson's managing is awful... I'm still trying to figure out why Jeter gets all the majority of starts at short.
-
so, Venezuela is next.... this, at least to me, is a mini version of the Olympics during the cold war with the USA vs. the Soviets. Man oh man, how sweet would it be to sock it to Hugo Chavez...

It's looking more and more like Betemit will be the backup SS (shudders). Man, how awesome would it have been if Lillibridge showed some ability to hit this spring. He could have been a real good option off the bench to platoon at 2B vs. lefties and backup at SS, CF, and LF. Oh well, he will be the starting SS for Charlotte. I'm assuming the bench will look something like: C Corky Miller INF Betemit 1B/OF Kroeger OF Anderson

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 17, 2009 -> 03:40 PM) I'm not going to pass up an opportunity to degrade Jerry Owens, there may not be many more chances left. That statement warms my heart.

Who would you rather see at the plate?

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 11:33 PM) I'd want to know who the hell is managing the game and why one of these players are batting in that situation. Maybe this could happen if it's the bottom of the 17th on the last day of the season after the rosters have expanded. If it did, I'd rather have it be Lillibridge because at least he's not Jerry Owens. Agreed.
