QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:43 PM) He has a lot of movement on his fastball and can move it around to get guys out. If he struggles as a starter, I think he would have a bright future as a setup man. From what I saw yesterday, his cruve is definitely worth the hype.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:24 PM) Some pretty interesting numbers regarding Ramirez: Alexei has struckout 39 times this season, only 3 of those were looking. Alexei sees 3.17 pitches per plate appearance, that's well below average which is 3.80. Swisher sees 4.52, Cabrera: 3.49. Alexei swings at 61% of the pitches he sees. League average is 45%. Alexei swings at the first pitch about 50% of the time. League average: 28%, Nick Swisher: 15%, OC: 29%, CQ: 35%, AJ: 38% Bottom line: Alexei Ramirez REALLY likes to swing the bat. And I love that about him.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:56 PM) Just because Soriano bats lead off doesn't mean he is a lead off hitter. True, as I actually agree Soriano shouldn't be a leadoff hitter. However, that doesn't mean that he's a bad leadoff hitter either. I think the fact that Ramirez won't hit for the power you'd expect from a 3-4-5 guy (I see him averaging about 20-25 a year), either he should bat leadoff, 2nd, or 6th/7th.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:47 PM) Tell that to Zambrano who threw 130 one night and was on the DL after his next start. Too many pitchers today do not have the ability to reach that pitch count without breaking down. Most of the pitchers today would have blown out their arms in the minors and never seen the majors prior to 1980 or so. Expansion has created the problem of talented but fragile pitchers. Okay, I know you know a lot about health and such, so answer me this... Why were pitchers back in the good ole days of baseball able to throw complete game after complete game and throw well over a 100 pitches a game, on 1 or 2 days rest, while pitchers now-a-days can barely throw one complete game a season 4-5 days rest?

I always wanted to make a thread in here...

I don't know what to think of Obama being a White Sox fan... it's no secret that I don't think very highly of him. On one hand, I feel ashamed that he's a White Sox fan. On the other hand, a part of me thinks that he can't be as bad as I think he is if he is a White Sox fan. If only he was a republican... -
2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Thread
BearSox replied to ChiSox_Sonix's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Now that they decided baseball and softball aren't olympic sports anymore (this is the last year for them), yet idiotic sports such as badminton and trampoline jumping are (as well as other idiotic sports), I could care less about the olympics. I am still hoping America dominates and sends out a big F-U to the rest of the world, but the olympics as a whole can go to hell, IMO. -

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:46 PM) Not ugly, but definitely not hot. definitely do-able. -
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) You'd typically like a leadoff guy to walk more than 20 times a year. Soriano averages about 30 walks a year... I think Ramirez can average around that many a year.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) how does alexei keep doing what he's doing cause he's a stone cold pimp?
-
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:36 PM) Why even risk it in a game like this? It was 3-1, the Tigers were still very much in it. Plus, their bullpen sucks and was taxed out from the previous night.
-
I think Alexei would make a fantastic leadoff hitter, in the mold of Soriano. The only difference is that Soriano will give you more pop, but Alexei won't K a ton.
-
QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:29 PM) Alexei with a clutch hit right there... Wish he wouldn't have gotten caught though He did the right thing. With Thome running and the fact that the ball was hit very hard, you want the runner to get caught to ensure the runner scores.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:27 PM) Honestly, who lets a young pitcher like JV go 130 pitches? Oh puh-lease. Pitch count is so overrated, it's not even funny anymore. Pitchers can easily throw 130 pitches a night, but because teams invest so much in pitchers now-a-days, GM's and managers baby the pitchers.

I'd love to see Ramirez hit a granny right here.

Great AB by Paulie... Anderson in to pinch run. So, what are the odds that Griffey comes in for Anderson after this inning?

BearSox replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Joanna Krupa's PETA pictures are about a trillion times better: http://www.peta.org.uk/feat/images/krupaMEDIUMuk72.jpg http://www.peta.org.uk/feat/buttons/joannakrupa1-large.jpg http://www.peta.org.uk/feat/buttons/joannakrupa2-large.jpg ________________ Then again, Krupa is simply much hotter. To make things better, Krupa is polish and from our very own Chicago! However, her only knock is that she is associated with PETA. -
would prefer to see Swish and Ramirez switch spots, but not that big of a deal...

Seriously, what did Josh Fields do to be benched in favor of Uribe?
-
a nice 1-2-3 inning for Gio in the 2nd.
-
he's sitting around 90, topping out at 91... I thought he had a bit more velocity than that. He's throwing his fastball too much, but that's because he keeps falling behind.
-
so far, not so good. He got the first two guys with a K, but Rios got a double, Overbay walked, and Barajas hit a bomb... control is an issue for Gio tonight.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 02:19 AM) Is it really that unrealistic to think that Beckham could become a 3Bman? That just seems like the logical jump to me, because if he moves from SS due to defense, it's because of his range and not of his throwing arm, and so long as his bat projects pretty well, he should move to 3B. I don't think that was necessarily the plan so much as just adding more athletes to the organization, but potentially being able to move him around anywhere in the infield is nice flexibility to have. I could see Beckham potentially at 3B, but I think his bat fits more into 2B. Beckham put up huge power numbers at Georgia, but I don't see that power translating with wood. If everything goes as planned, I see Beckham as a Michael Young type except with more power and less average.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 02:53 PM) what makes you think that? All of those can create electricity. Electricity can run homes, businesses, cars, trains, machinery, and most things that we currently need energy for. That's the great majority of our oil use (though, admitedly, not 100%). I just... I'm stunned. Here's a small example of what products are produced from oil... http://www.anwr.org/features/oiluses.htm

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 02:44 PM) This is stunning. Do you know how oil is "made"? Do you know how much biomass it takes, and how long it takes for it to become oil? And do you actually, honestly think that amount even remotely rivals the billions of barrels of oil we use every day? No wonder you want to drill. You are the only person I have ever heard who actually thinks that oil is a renewable resource. And WTF is with this 100 years stuff? We have all sorts of alternatives, RIGHT NOW! Just like you can drill right now, you can also do wind, solar, geo, hyrdo and other stuff right now. 100 years? Where are you getting this stuff? none of that stuff can do what oil does for us. Oil is used in practically everything today.
