  1. QUOTE(NUKE @ May 8, 2007 -> 08:05 AM) That was our assessment as well. I'm becoming convinced it doesn't matter if we leave in six months or six years, they will fall back to life as usual and what they are comfortable and familiar.
  2. QUOTE(Y2HH @ May 8, 2007 -> 08:20 AM) First, hiding behind the 'literal' intrepretation of the constitution is a weak way to argue. Does the consitution tell us what's safe or unsafe to eat? And since it doesn't, do we have no right to eat anything? See the way that works? And if you have the right to clean air, shouldn't I have the inverse right to dirty air, if I so choose? Oh, wait...I need to be more open minded, right? And as long as I agree with everything you say, then I'm free to do it? That's not how freedom works. Oh, and before you say something insane to counterpoint me like, "Ok then, should I have the right to shoot people randomly on the streets", let me clear something up. I have no problem with them banning smoking outdoors or in publically owned places...but telling a privatly owned establishment, like a bar, that smoking is banned is, IMO, unconstituational. You don't have to go there if you don't like smoke...but walking out in front of it to get from point A to point B is something different, entirely. I agree in that case you shouldn't have to deal with it...but nobody is forcing you to go inside, either. We protect workers and the public all the time from unsafe conditions. Asbestos, lead paint, lead in gas, auto emissions, etc. Why is smoking different? The evidence of health risks from second hand smoke has reached a critical mass where society can not ignore it anymore. Hiding behind a literal interpretation is weak? Objective evidence is far stronger than inference and freedoms by omission . And where in the Constitution is the right to smoke?
  3. QUOTE(Y2HH @ May 8, 2007 -> 08:08 AM) I don't smoke and never have, and I don't like this law. Every freedom they take, even if they are freedoms we don't all agree with, is one we never get back. Think of it like the dominos of freedom falling. Next they will ban beer at the ballpark. Oh, and hotdogs are bad for you, too, let's ban those while we're at it. Meh. Don't we have a right to clean air? Did we take away the "freedom" of car owners to drive cars with poor emissions? Many parks already have non drinking sections. We have health inspectors to keep that hotdog safe. Should we have the freedom to make unsafe hotdogs? I don't understand the right to smoke anywhere, where is that in our constitution?
  4. In judging GMs, trades are a big part. No GM is perfect, but what makes a great GM?
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 7, 2007 -> 07:01 AM) And this in a nutshell is why the rest of the world hates the New York Yankees. Everyone else has injury problems and they either dip into the minors or make a trade. The Yankees have injury problems and they spend $5 million A MONTH for a another pitcher. Be grateful they have to pay $5 mil for another pitcher. Let's pretend that all players were paid the same and could pick any franchise to play for. How many would like to play in Yankee pinstripes on the largest stage in the world? Hear the ghosts of a HoF lineup? Add to the 20 something WS titles? It would suck even more than it does now. Hell, the Cubs and their almost constant sell outs would attract more players than the Sox. And finally, isn't it cool when the greatest lineup money can buy loses? Look at wrestling, you need someone to be knocked off that perch. If baseball didn't have the Yankees, they would have to invent them.
  6. If we waited to see what happens, this would be a very boring site. Part of being an avid fan is playing armchair GM, manager, hitting coach, etc. Like K-Dub, sometimes you are right, sometimes you are wrong.
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 8, 2007 -> 06:18 AM) So nobody still cares about the people who practically do... IE the employees? I do. But most are probably illegals, so who cares? BTW, that is the best argument I've heard for smoking bans, it is where people work.
  8. I doubt the story is true, but I will speculate. If my kids were out with one of my co workers and they encouraged my kids to do something unethical, immoral, etc. I'd have a little problem with that. BTW, it is a theory, it's possibly true. Not all theories are correct.
  9. Illinois WI MN IN Ky TN Mississippi Missouri Michigan OK TX CA NC SC Georgia NM OH Penn NY Maine Vermont Florida NH Mass KS Iowa LA Alabama I am probably forgetting some.
  10. "Just" Illinois? Bunch of whiners. Say Illinois proud! Illinois, now I'm from Texas, what country y'all from?
  11. Small steps by everyone makes more of an impact than nitpicking a few people. Let's all applaud Bush, on vacation he rides a horse. I believe the environmental impact on a horse is better than any hybrid.
  12. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 7, 2007 -> 12:29 PM) Honestly, so do I. Because I think it'd be a great thing for these gigantic media conglomerates to realize that there's a huge potential cost to putting people like this on the airwaves. But there are reasons that contracts are pages and pages long. I'm guessing Imus' lawyer failed to mentioned the various parts of the contract that are not helping his client's cause.
  13. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ May 8, 2007 -> 12:16 AM) Last time I checked, I don't live in a bar. Cheers!
  14. QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ May 7, 2007 -> 01:07 AM) Sooo...exactly what study are these guys using to deem second hand smoke so destructive? Or is it just the smell? I'm just not seeing the basis of this law. I suppose if you spent 4 hours a day in a 400sqft bar which is always packed with smokers, well, you may face a true quality of life violation...but the average person hitting the bar once or twice a week for a few hours, often in very large buildings with ventilation, doesn't exactly sound like a grave, even minuscule, danger. It's hilarious to me, you see a town a few years back claim that they were going smoke-free. Since that time, it's been a freakin' contest to see what town/city/state can come up with the newest "safety law" (blatantly abusing the constitution) to make the news and get their name on the map. And the sad part is that some of you selfish people are applauding this blatantly political move. Workers. They are there that often. And there have been lots and lots of studies, going back a few decades that show the negative effects. You are correct, it's the same people who make you wear a seatbelt, not speed, inspect elevators, inspect restaurants for health violations, enforce building codes, tell you what drugs will require a prescription, and all those other "safety laws". And of course it's the same people who wrote laws to keep you from playing your stereo loud enough for the whole neighborhood to enjoy at 3am, who stop you from painting a billboard on the side of your house, make you mow your lawn, and all that other b.s. I wonder why no one brings up the Constitutional right to cigarettes? Maybe it is because there isn't one? There is plenty of legal precedent that polluting the air isn't protected, but the right to clean air is? We generally protect the rights of the person who isn't harming anyone or anything over the rights of the person creating the nuisance.
  15. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 6, 2007 -> 08:44 PM) Aren't dogs a man's best friend? American dogs are man's best friend, not Iraqi dogs . . .
  16. mixed bag. I thought rowand sucked last season.
  17. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 6, 2007 -> 08:35 PM) "We called in EOD to blow it and then raided the house where the wire led back to. Nobody was home except for a dog ( which we shot ) so we turned the place upside down. The command wire led to a breaker switch. We took video of it and then destroyed it with our shotgun. After that, we exfilled the area and returned to base." This disturbed me a bit. boys will be boys . . .
  18. I was just thinking, and two lazy to research, but how have players like Rowand, Olivo. etc. done after they leave Walker's tutelage? I'm trying to think of the position players who have left. If Walker sucks, theory states the players should show the immediate improvement that some of y'all think will happen.
  19. f*** owners. I love it when a player has the owner over the barrel.
  20. Once again we seem to be trying to help a country who doesn't want to help themselves or us. It that scenario, no matter what we do, when we leave it's chaos all over again.
  21. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 5, 2007 -> 11:15 PM) So I saw a fox tonight. We set a shooting house in the ground (it's 12.5 feet up in the air) then we planted 24 apple trees, and cleaned out something called a man-cave. My uncle had an addition built onto the end of his garage that will have work benches, a futon, tables, mounted animals, and a winch on which to hang a deer and skin it. It also has a garage door to drive in a 4-wheeler. Quite the setup. We tested out the winch by wearing safety harnesses and riding it. You are thisclose to being an honorary Texas
  22. QUOTE(knightni @ May 5, 2007 -> 10:25 PM) Cooper gets a pass because of late 2005. The Sox won in spite of Walker in late 2005. And somehow he continues to fool the entire Sox organization.
  23. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ May 4, 2007 -> 03:38 PM) By what standard is that sold at an 'unfair price'? Based on the lowest price that it sells for, in this case Thailand. I see both sides of this argument. This is a lifesaving drug that the company has already offered at a lower price to someone else.
  24. I keep looking at the thread title and thinking this is a thread for male strippers to tell their tales . . . I never want to be in a place where if I died, I'd be embarrassed for my mom and dad to stop by.
  25. I stand by my statement that changing coaches in mid season is risky and a final act of desperation by a team. Perhaps it is desperation time. I'm guessing that come Monday, it will be all right, but if not, Walker may be having a very unhappy meeting with K-Dub and Oz. But the problem goes well beyond Walker, the organization for the past couple decades has preached long ball. Which has me amazed we've done that without at least one poster boy for steroids. Players coming into the organization have to notice what gets rewarded on the 25 man roster. But bringing in someone new, and if he starts wholesales changes, we could be throwing in the towel quickly. If all it takes is a tweak, Walker is the guy to do it. If we need a sledge hammer and time, start waving the flag and have Spring Training II only when the results count for real.
