Walker's Last Support Falls . While I think firing a coach in mid season is the ultimate panic move, I'd give Walker through the weekend and if they don't show some signs of improvement, I guess we just got desperate.

Thome doesn't hurt that rib cage with a different hitting coach and an all new swing. Seriously, how fast do y'all think it would take a new hitting coach to change the team and why does it take a coach? Are the players able to drop a lifetime of habits and adopt new swings overnight?

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ May 4, 2007 -> 08:41 AM) I think, I'm not sure, but I think, the main part of the story was the Thome bit. Like I said, I think that was what the topic was really meant to be. Bland, giant portions? He was talking about Thome

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2007 -> 07:56 AM) I read in the newspaper yesterday that if people were to add one capital letter and one character (such as !@#$ etc) that the average time need to hack their password would go from 2.6 days to 2.1 centuries. Cool. That tip may be worth the price of this web site

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2007 -> 07:36 AM) Oh I have no doubt that it is needed, I am just not quite sure the nature of the timing. I would have about ten seconds after he announced, I'm surprised it took this long. But I'm conservative in these things. It doesn't take Carnak the Magnificent to see this was coming.

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ May 4, 2007 -> 08:06 AM) So what do you want to do? Just sit and watch this offense struggle for another month? Then what? Whether or not its Walkers fault or not, he is accountable, and the hitters are not hitting. Do I think changing things will turn the switch? No. But it can't get worse and change is the best course here. I didn't realize there was a one month schedule. What is the schedule for .300 line drive hitting from the new coach? What do you want to do, watch them struggle for *three* months under a new hitting coach who produced the same minor league swings we've been seeing? Is Walker accountable if the organization told him they wanted extra pop out of the swings and he's following orders? If the players, the guys who are paid to swing, are happy, how quick do you think they will be to make changes? Crede = A-Rod with a different coach, got it

I imagine once you start with Secret Service protection you just handed your life over to them. They should be allowed to dictate when and where some activities take place. Win or lose, I wish this election would show America at its' absolute best at respecting people of all heritages, but sadly, it probably will just highlight how far we have to go.

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ May 3, 2007 -> 06:01 PM) I'm interested to see what kind of final numbers the positive individuals on this board are projecting for our regulars. We talk about 3 games as if its no big thing, but I would be willing to be a lot of money it will be 5 games 1 week from today. I believe there is a difference between being positive and thinking that not firing a coach right now is the best course of action. I am not happy with Walker, but think a switch right now isn't worth the risk. I don't want to see him during Spring Training '08. I don't see a coach coming in, making the changes necessary, and all of a sudden guys can change a swing overnight and build better habits. Unless we're talking about a psychological boost, I don't see the risk as worth it. I also am not convinced that this is solely Walker preaching long ball. I am more inclined to believe it is a system wide approach based on the personnel we have.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ May 3, 2007 -> 08:44 PM) I would imagine that Obama requested it. A couple articles made it seem as if the Secret Service decided it would be a good idea

QUOTE(BobDylan @ May 3, 2007 -> 03:42 PM) You're one person...or at least no more than 20. Is that enough to off-set the damages? Most, if not all smokers will not go into a non-smoking bar. That much is already known. The question isn't whether the smoke free people will make up for those losses, but whether the smokers will bite the bullet. A smoker loves his booze. Besides coffee, nothing goes better with a smoke than booze. The city should not restrict every bar possible. They should make zoning areas. "You can smoke here, but not here." Just because the non-smokers don't want to breathe the s***, doesn't mean the smokers should suffer for it. Interesting idea, but if it is bad there, how could it be ok over there?

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ May 3, 2007 -> 10:21 AM) Exactly, hookers are the way to go. I completely agree with you. Yep, pfffft amateurs.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 3, 2007 -> 03:28 PM) Just curious, and I don't intend to read through this thread, but, at what point does the scope of accountability begin to focus on the players on the field and not the ownership, General Manager, coaching staff, etc.? . Nope, it's all Walker's fault. Replace Walker and we're hitting .300 with line drives everywhere.

QUOTE(Cknolls @ May 3, 2007 -> 03:15 PM) Aren't all Pres. candidates afforded Secret Service protection? I thought they didn't unless they won their party's nomination. QUOTE(Cknolls @ May 3, 2007 -> 03:15 PM) Aren't all Pres. candidates afforded Secret Service protection? There is a SS committee that rules when a candidate is high profile enough and needs the protection.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ May 3, 2007 -> 02:47 PM) Start paying people to grow corn instead of paying them NOT to grow corn. More corn and everyone is happy. And that would be right in line with why we were paying them to not grow corn. It kept the land available and protected wildlife, stopped another dust bowl, etc. I think the government should declare eminent domain on anyone who refuses to plant.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2007 -> 02:41 PM) There is still a Snuggery in Union Station... Really? Across from Adam's Rib?
-
Do they ever lock anyone up for this stuff? More fiines, longer probabtions
-
Snuggery was a chain of hot bars in the Chicago suburbs. IIRC they had four or five locations, including one near Motorola on Algonquin is Schaumburg. Last time I was there it became The Alumni Club. I used them as an example of how fickle the club business is.
-
And the problem with the bar business and giving credit to or blame for their success after a ban is how many fail anyways. It isn't like bars are the blue chip business prospect. Anyone been to a Snuggery lately

QUOTE(heirdog @ May 3, 2007 -> 12:38 PM) We became a home run team when Greg "Looping Swing" Walker became the hitting coach. New fan?
-
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ May 3, 2007 -> 01:08 PM) Are they really going to get worse than they are? And if so, does it matter? The current output isn't going to get them anywhere near the playoffs. The question is which approach could get them moving sooner? If players thought Walker was the cause, don't you think comments would have been leaked by now and all over the press? We have a few assumptions here. For example, that Walker took it upon himself to move away from "small ball" and into more power. That somehow Walker is solely responsible for the approach that the team is taking. For all we know, he is following the company line and the next guy may be forced to teach to the same goal. Prior to 2005, and during that season, every member of the organization was the target of this sort of plan. Of all the people in the organization that I could see leaving, Walker is at the top of the list. But I think it should have been done during the off season.

If we continue to trade everyone when they are at "peak value" do you ever win another World Series?

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ May 3, 2007 -> 12:46 PM) Question. I have a friend who's dad owns a body shop. My friend and almost all the workers there smoke in the garage. Would a place like that have to ban smoking? Probably. Enforcement would be the issue. We can make all the laws in the world, but without enforcement, they are meaningless. In other words, if no one objects at work, it will probably be business as usual. If one person complains, there will probably be a problem. Here is an interesting question that no one has brought up., Certainly there will be smokers who can't go a few hours without a cigarette, and will have to stay home and avoid bars. Will there now be non smokers who will want to go to bars who may offset the business lost?
