Crew Rushes to Get to Trapped W.Va. Miners
The GOP has insulated themselves from any and all criticism. It is either the result of a biased media, activist judges, or the usual whining of "it is always Bush's fault" and should be ignored. Bush has been the perfect President, just ask any Republican. Now after I got that off my chest, this really can't be Bush's fault. As YAS pointed out they were cited for numerous violations. Perhaps the follow up might have been better, but the miners who continued to go into the mine, and the new mine owners who must have known of the issues and continued to send men in while, hopefully, trying to remedy the violations, are to blame. I also would like to know if the number of active mines increased, decreased, or stayed the same while the budget was reduced 10%. Perhaps if the number of mines decreased 20% during that period we actually may have greater expenses per mine.

"Heated Arguments"
And here in lies the balance that we are trying to find. To save the feelings of the majority of posters who found the religion and politics threads too extreme and well, just too everything, and to allow for the free swinging banter back and forth, Filibuster was founded. For the most part, it has worked and worked well. Last night, and it always seems to be at night, things boiled over between some outstanding, long term posters. What I read was raw, honest, communications, between people who are very comfortable with each other. The opinions did not surprise me, anyone who has been here for any length of time would recognize some of those posts without names. The decision was made to close the thread to avoid more fireworks. The thread was clearly over any line that was established for SL&P, and would have resulted in some person or persons being sent to the penalty box for a 5 day misconduct. In Filibuster, it's a closed thread. Past decisions do not guarantee future actions. Your mileage may vary, Please see local dealers for more details. Void were prohibited. The opinions expressed here are not the opinion of soxtalk.com, it's advertisers, or possibly even me in the next five minutes.

Crew Rushes to Get to Trapped W.Va. Miners
I guess the reporting could have been Miner(s) May Be Trapped Autopsies reveal Miners Dead They could have turned *off* the cameras when the Church Bells starting ringing and people started cheering. But reporters took the information that was coming from the mine. They didn't create a rumour, the didn't take something from a 1-900-Psychic, and report it as fact. Everyone with the exception of the mine owners, were stating the same thing. And the miscommunication came from someone *inside* the mine and then relayed. Who was more in position to know, the mine owners above ground, or the recuers in the mine? The reporters, like everyone else, were mistaken. To blame the media for the families anguish, when the reporters received the news from the families, seems illogical. But, I do agree with SS, that there should be designated one official source, and hopefully it isn't the Governor in this case. Hopefully something like this never happens again.

I thought earier in the year that if USC did not have "the streak" going, that Texas would have been ranked #1, but agreed until USC loses, they deserved that position. I think that makes the UT win all that much sweeter. And it was the defensive battle everyone expected

Iran President: Israel Completed Holocaust
QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) Here is a simplification of the issue...let's suppose your next door neighbor had a son that, for whatever reason, was thrown out of his house. Out of the kindness of your heart, you allow him to live in your house until he can go home. Eventually he gets so comfortable in your house (because he has many more rights and freedoms there) that he decides that your house is his house. Now he wants his friends and family to enjoy the same rights and freedoms he has, so he tries to get them to move in to your house. When you explain to him that you don't have room for all these people, he tells you that he will kill you and your family members so that his "people" can take over your home. (In case you were wondering, your home represents Israel, and your neighbor represents the "palestinians".) I agree whole heartily with your example, except, when Israel was created in the 1940s, wasn't it more like this example? The neighbor comes to you and proclaims, my great grandfather lived in your house, you have to move out. Even the United Nations agrees, you have to leave. (in case you are wondering, you are a Palestinian and your neighbor is a Jew from anywhere in the world)

Crew Rushes to Get to Trapped W.Va. Miners
I'm with Steff and YASNY on this one. I am having a hard time understanding what the media did wrong in this, they reported that the families thought their families were alive, then reported that the families found out they died. Should they not have reported that Church bells are ringing and people are shouting they are alive? The world was waiting on news of the miners, each bit of progress was reported. And if they didn't report it, would the families have been spared? No. They families were not getting news from the Governor or the media, the news seems to have been spread by volunteer rescuers. If the media wasn't there, the families would still have been given wrong information. I'm guessing it was one guy with a cell phone calling back to the Church. News media are the rough draft of history. If you want to wait for all the facts, then nothing would be reported, it would all be in the history books.

Crew Rushes to Get to Trapped W.Va. Miners
QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 08:06 AM) I heard this morning that the reporters got the info from a Church official who supposedly got the news from a police official...??? Apparently the police were not speaking directly to the media for this very reason...? I was half listening so I definitely could be wrong.. I think the ringing of the Church bells and people screaming in the streets alerted most reporters. From what I pieced together a volunteer relayed the news without waiting to be certain exactly what was said by the guys in the mine. Perhaps he had a friend or family member he phoned?

Crew Rushes to Get to Trapped W.Va. Miners
It sounds to me like it was the volunteers who relayed the news. I'm not certain whet y'all heard, maybe it's different then the report I heard, but speculation was someone, not an official, overheard something, and spread the wrong information. Sadly, when 100 people are all shouting the same thing, it seems real. Should the media point a camera at the Governor and other victim's families and report what they are saying, or stay off the air until it is confirmed by someone other than the Governor?

Crew Rushes to Get to Trapped W.Va. Miners
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 07:06 AM) What an unbelievable screw up. I can't imagine a worse scenario actually unfolding here... Someone has a lot of explaining to do. As for the one survivor, he is in critical condition and needs lots of prayers. It seems the information that was "officially released" was accurate. There were some communications that were overheard, and repeated, that was wrong. Those seemed to come from volunteers. I think that was a Fox report. Speculation in my part. One idiot wanted to be a hero and went off with half the information. A rumour got started with heart breaking results.

Mining is such a dangerous profession. I cannot fathom men who feel so trapped in their economic situation that they would knowingly go into an unsafe mine.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 12:32 PM) Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, the mother of White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, is going to run for governor of Texas next year. Interestingly enough though, she's Leaving the Republican Party and running as an independent, mainly to avoid a primary fight with the Governor it seems. This is going to be an exciting election. Friedman, Strayhorn, Perry, and who knows who else will make a run. I voted Perry in the last election.

Gyros
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 10:14 AM) I've never eaten one before that wasn't cut right off the slab of rotating meat. So it being done any other way, is news to me. We do things right in chicago. There are only a couple places here that sell them and they sell so few that they have to go with prepackaged meet and heat it up. It just doesn't taste the same. Which is why I was so happy to see that pressed meat and meat byproducts spining away. My favorite gyros place was with Athens Gyros (now closed) in Lakehurst Mall or in Harlem Irving Plaza there was a little place (Coney Dogs?) where the guy couldn't count change and would always try to take an extra .25 cents or so.

Ventilators, Economics and You
Sadly, we have the attention span of a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Terry case pitted a soon to be ex-husband against her parents. I think that was more the debate than taking her off, of course it spun off into that, but the root was who makes the decision.

Idiot Governor Blanco
I can understand spending money to refurbish and remodel outdated offices to make the users more productive. It happens in private industry all the time. When computers, printers, and all that stuff replaced secretaries and file clerks, many offices needed updating. But, this would have been a great PR move for the governor to stop construction for a year and help the budget shortfall. Some would have complained it was grandstanding and meaningless with something like a billion dollar deficit, but it would have been the right thing to do. Plus, it wasn't like the Governor wouldn't have known that work was happening. I'm just thinking, there are two major components of being a Governor, getting elected and being a governor. It would seem the getting elected comes first and weeds out too many individuals that would be great governors. You have to be a politician first. I think that is why some small cities with City Managers and a part time mayor have a better system.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 11:43 AM) You can divide or govern the city however you want, but there is no way to settle this issue to make both sides happy. I have always suspected that is true, now that I'm learning a little history, it has become clearer that you are correct. So now we have a whose sword is mightier situation that will probably last forever.

I've been doing a little reading on this and it is fascinating. The conspiracy nuts are everywhere in this. Trying to sort out credible sources is tough enough, no way to sort out biased.

Iran President: Israel Completed Holocaust
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 07:32 AM) If that's the case, 99% of the Palestinians have to right of return to Israel anyway because they never lived there, so this whole discussion is moot. What an amazing time in human history. Imagine being on the committee that decided if, when, and where. From what I was reading the vote was not unanimous, and all the worlds superpowers were kept out of the voting and decision making. Although I am certain their preferences were made clear to the countries involved. Then to be some of the first settlers. Starting your own country. Wow. We've seen a little of this with some of the former Soviet Union countries, but they didn't change boundaries too much.
