QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 12:23 PM) These pretzels are making me THIRSTY!! Is that some sort of swipe at Bush? Wait until Kap reads it, then your ass is grass my man.

WalMart is the shining example of American Capitalism. They beat the world at the US retail game. Using every advantage they could muster, they became the #1 retailer. Now we see what the victor looks like, and some people are unhappy with they picture. Survival of the fittest. Mom and Pop died because they couldn't compeat. Local manufactures died, because the couldn't compeat. Walmart remains standing.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 11:09 AM) You'll know they're up to speed when they start having dead people voting. Actually each dead person may vote 73 times. Once for himself and also for the 72 virgins

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 11:08 AM) You mentioned Bush post-9-11. Who can forget the image of him standing on a pile of rubble with a bullhorn telling the firefighters that we're gonna get the bastards who did this. That was a timeless moment right there. Any it was a scripted as anything else that came before and followed. Every speech, every outfit, every event is choreographed for the President. That is why I thought the hurricanes would be a huge Bush stage, and he just didn't make it happen.

I believe politics changed with Reagan. Charisma carried Ron a long way. Then the worse possible combination happened, giant deficts being accepted by the voters, the have your cake and someone else will pay for it. Cable TV and 24/7 news, instead of allowing indepth coverage, became news when you want it. There isn't any more depth, just the same shallow sound bites played 72 times a day, instead of 3 times on the network. Even though Kerry "disproved" and had great expectations for any appearance of flip flopping, the mud stuck and he couldn't shake it. The Swiftees just had to make enough noise, it didn't matter if it was true, no one had time to report the substance and Rush always distills it for you anyways. The GOP Media Network took a 51-49 election and with pretty red and blue blocks, tried to make it look like 90% of the country wanted Bush. And sadly, some people fell for. The GOP attacks our legal system when judges follow their constituational responsibility, they attack our freedom of speech and the press with cries of bias, they rack up deficits, and convince voters someone else is going to ride in and pay for it all. And if you consider yourself a REP, then they have convinced you to back their play and defend whatever slimy stock deal or campaign trick they use. So we have style over substance. The GOP attacks a candidate because she has no legs and that must be the only reason she was selected. Convicted before she even speaks. Perhaps that is why they may nominate McCain. He's a POW and they will be looking for a sympathetic figure.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 09:26 AM) Hey Tex- Where is the room for independents? What if some of us have views that fall on both sides of the aisle? I was thinking that was the rest of the forum. I also thought that there are a few here who fancy themselves Independents, but the rest of the group would not. I support more than a handful of GOP candidates, and consider myself an independent based on neither party really wanting me. Top of my head the anti-death penalty and balance the budget gets me kicked out of the GOP and my gun rights and balance the budget get me kicked out of the Dems. But to most here I look like a dyed in the wool Dem with a strange crush on DeLay.

First off, I always thought I lit a fire was in reference to a joint. Second off, if Afternoon Delight is being quoted, I always have linked these two babies together

There are a few topics that I wouldn't mind discussing with sympathizers, like Howard Dean who I think has done a terrible job of public relations and defining the issues. I thought it was a solid decision at first, but I've become so disgusted with some of his rhetoric. But once the GOPerheads get started it would become too ugly. And having a GOP only allows them to chat up DeLay without embarassment.

QUOTE(juddling @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 08:24 AM) It seems the minority parties in Iraq have learned something from America: when the election results don't go your way, claim fraud, harrassment, etc. I doubt the Iraqi's have figured out fraud and harrassment this early in their democracy

I don't have a problem with that at all. I believe one of the most important role our leaders have is to be cheerleaders. Reagan came at a great time, the hangover from Nixon, Vietnam, Carter, Ford's WIN, etc. The comes in, riding a white horse, and cleans up the world with a smile and a nod. Clinton was blowing a sax, shaking off the President as old guy image, Bush comes flying in on an aircraft carrier, I love all that stuff. People feel better, the work harder, and it really does help. Clinton's "I feel your pain" was brilliant and he pulled it off well, and people reacted. After 9/11 I thought Bush deserved high a marks, not as a manager, but as a spiritual advisor, source of comfort, and cheerleader. If the pr flacks can help that, go for it. For the same reason I was dissapointed in Bush during the hurricanes. I thought he's be at his absolute best for the country. I wanted to see him with rolled up sleeves, jeans, boots, and helping. I know it would have only been for a few seconds, he's stop when the cameras stopped rolling, but I'd remember that and feel better. He would be emmulating the behavior and offering up a model. A politician has to ask, what's the best thing to do here and now in this crisis? It may be to grab a bag of sand and place it there. It is probably better to encourage a thousand people to grab a bag and place it there. That makes much more sense than just placing one bag annonymously. Everything a leader says and does is important in the time of a natural tragedy. We want them looking and acting in a manner that helps. So if wearing jeans and scooping some soup for the homeless helps, then do that. I think too many people underestimate what feeling good about the future and feeling good about America does to the economy, crime rates, and everything else. Our best Presidents make us feel good about ourselves and America. There is substance to emotions.

We know this whole tack it on is a bi-partisan ploy. But it is a gross misstatement that by tacking it on and needing 60 votes it somehow made it more difficult or even wasn't trying to subvert is a joke. By tacking it on to something that had to be passed, they made voting against it almost impossible.

QUOTE(SoCalSouthSider59 @ Dec 20, 2005 -> 12:21 PM) Cool Arnie........ I wonder if the next condemmed inmate to be executed in Cali, next month i think, will get the same buildup by the bleeding hearts and useless actors as ol' Tookie was. He's white, very old, and has a number of medical conditions, including near blindness. Somehow i doubt it very much, and Arnold will reject his plea for clemency as well, as he should, time for this cat to meet his maker too.......... Wonder if Mike, Susan, Jesse, Al, and Najii will stand up for him.......... :headshake Human live is so worthless. How could we possibly go wrong by killing people? I still find it laughable that GOPernauts that don't trust the government to treat their colds with a national health plan, feel that same government is perfectly capable of deciding which citizens should live and which should die. We should have an abortion jury. Allow any woman who wants an abortion to go before a jury and explain why her fetus should die. If they vote blood, kill the baby. Because GOPernauts support the governments right to kill anyone for what they decide is a death penalty case.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 06:46 AM) After missing a full season maybe he just wants to get started early? sounds good to me, I still am thinking pr move. Spring training is already long and the drills and schedule are in place for pitchers and catchers. Maybe Jim is going to be the backup to the backup to the backup catcher I just don't think it is all that earth shattering. I do agree it is a lot better than the opposite and reinstills the image of a great team player.
-
If he is 100% healthy, a player with his resume doesn't need the extra spring training time. Nice pr move or hint of a slower recovery? I'm hoping its PR.

It is a nice article but soon some people will jump in and point out all the negative b.s. about Hawk and Tony, Belle, umpire confusion, and other stuff. If this was Mariotti, it would be trashed. It is never what is written, it is always who wrote it.
