QUOTE(Mercy! @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:36 PM) Hmm. This seems to have evolved into a Marriage Thread. Odd, that natural progression. I sure wish we could do some things to strengthen that sacred bond between a man and a woman. How about a Constitutional Amendment Banning Divorce? Move to Ireland . . .

QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) i am going to play devil advocate here, ok and please do not take offense. lets say it paulie and timo what is paulie worth and lets say we pay paulie, and for argument sake 16 mil. is this too much to pay. timo ok maybe he is not the best example so lets say juan and if he was a fa. would paying him let say 8 mil be too much? by your statement, we are overpaying b/c he play for us, is a vital part of our org and we only overpaid by a few mil. Let me give you a real answer, we got Thome. It was days until I noticed what he was going to cost the Sox. I wasn't interested in the least. I was interested in where he would hit, where he would field, and the fact he is a solid citizen in the club house. I don't care if he's making $5 mil or $10 mil. If the Astros made more money this season than the Red Sox would it or should it make a difference to any of the fans? When they start publishing the box scores in the financial section, I'll start caring. Until then, I'm not that interested, but now I can see why some fans are so fascinated by it all. Thank you for the education. Counting other people's money just doesn't do anything for me.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 09:24 AM) So, we keep giving handouts to the poor when our Government could put them to work instead of shipping the jobs to another country. Yep. That makes sense to me. :headshake Government run factories. Nice idea comrade.

So why worry about border patrol uniforms when we are selling military uniforms in stores? :headshake

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:43 AM) You still can. Are you certain? I thought that was changed in the 9/11 aftermath?

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:24 AM) I know your not all that keen on the Kerry emails. You're hoping he introduces you to Hanoi Jane. I am much sadder that George stopped sending out emails. I always looked forward to reading his. I was never a Fonda fan. I thought her anti-war activities were distasteful, and way closer to treason that I'm comfortable with.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:17 AM) That's typical. You'd think we could have the uniforms made in the US. There aren't too many companies left that could manage the contract. It's all part of being competitive. People would point to a $150 uniform and point out how wasteful it is when they could be made for $95 in Mexico. Keep in mind that until a couple years ago, you could walk into a Military Surplus store and buy a uniform for cheap along with many of the accouterments.

Plus he's probably relying on media reports.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:20 AM) LOL. Touche'. Seriously, and maybe it's my age, I can't get excited over a player's contract. I just can't sit here and think wow, we got Thome for $7.2 mil now we can get Inspector Clouseau at $3.6 over 5 with incentives, with a player option at $4.8 and a team option in 2009 for $5.6 unless he averages 120 starts, then he gets $5.8 mil and with the money we save, we can order out for pizza. I'm more, where will he play, where in the batting order, what's he bring that we don't have and what hole did we just create. I don't know where the Sox budget should fall for player salaries, I don't know if they have a ton of fat in the front office that could be trimmed and an extra $3 mil moved to player salaries. I do know that worrying about the team overpaying for someone detracts from my enjoyment. OMG We overpaid $3 million here, the franchise is ruined, we will never reach the playoffs again. But with so many great Sox fans and knowledgeable baseball people here, I wanted to understand the fascination and the excitement of signing a guy to a "good contract". Is it the same as a win on the field?

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:18 AM) I really enjoyed your post in the 'grilled cheese sandwich' thread. That's all I'm giving you though. As long as it isn't a political post you are agreeing with. I don't want Kerry to stop sending me emails. That would be the saddest breakup

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 03:56 AM) C'mon TexSox. You know exactly what people are thinking and why they are thinking it when they express concern about $$$ amounts given to this or that player. This is an issue that has been discussed around here since the beginning of Soxtalk. And embarrassing as this is to admit, I have never understood it. Plus, I have never known what people are thinking until I ask them. But YAS, I am certain you know what I am thinking now.

I can't understand why the Iraqi people are so upset. They are living in a war zone. We are doing our best to stop the violence. This has to be better than living under their prior regime.

Soxtalk, not just for idiots anymore. Liberals and Conservatives agree, cut taxes, not Soxtalk.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 05:03 AM) One of the very few SL&P posts of yours in which I am in total agreement. As far as I'm concerned, you nailed it. Great Post! Wow, I have to agree, YAS, this is one of the few SL&P posts of *yours* in which I am in total agreement. Jim did nail it. I am hearing Paul Simon singing . . . still bitter after all these years . . .. In reality I'll bet Jim has let go, the family seems like a huge upgrade.

Ain't that the truth . . .

QUOTE(Mercy! @ Nov 27, 2005 -> 11:52 PM) Alright! I'd recognize that view from the southeast rim any day. I'll have to admit I didn't get there under my own power, though. I rode a horse up and back. And since I wasn't used to riding, I was SOME sore afterwards. Among the neat things that happened was having a mountain lion spook the horses while we were on the trail. Anyway, I've great memories of trips to Big Bend National Park - one of my absolute favorite places in the United States. I like cheese, too. There is something wonderful at seeing the wide open spaces from atop a horse. There are a few spots that I would have been nervous at the drops.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 27, 2005 -> 11:37 PM) No, what we're concerned about is keeping this team under the self proposed budget so we can add other parts and pieces. I know what you're trying to get at here but this question is crazy and I know your just trying to make a point out of it. How does everybody know what the budget should be? I mean really know. I just can't fathom careing if a player makes an extra million. I understand it makes for a more interesting off season playing GM, but as a fan, I don't really care if JR makes 1 million or 10 million next season.

Apathy creeps up, soon you have a friend where once there was a lover. Soon you have a stranger and without an strong emotions to drive the relationship, it dies like a tropical storm over cold water. That to me is the saddest. To end not in a final fireworks display, a catharsis of sorts, it ends with a whimper.

I guess moving is the best way to end a relationship

QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 27, 2005 -> 11:04 PM) I believe that the tax cuts are a stimulus, but I also believe we need to cut spending, and spend the money we do more responsibly - sounds simple, but the government is constantly waisting our tax money. OK, I'll buy it's a stimulus. But who will be paying back the debt plus interest?

QUOTE(timotime @ Nov 27, 2005 -> 11:02 PM) veeck. i should have known. now i know more about him than i ever did before. my hats off to you, man. I was a stupid, half drunk, underage, college student when I met him at a game. He asked if I was having a good time, and told me there was no better place to be than right here. It was all of 5 seconds, but he made me feel like a was a part of the Sox success. Special person.

QUOTE(timotime @ Nov 27, 2005 -> 10:51 PM) tex, i have to ask, who is the guy with the glasses on the left side of your avatar? Bill Veeck, White Sox owner during the South Side Hit Men and Rent a Player days. Thanks for asking.

QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 27, 2005 -> 10:43 PM) i was talking purely on george and you make some very good points esp spending to make more and winning more series as the yanks under george won how many series??? so spending money at the right person and position, has always been my argument. rafael looks good now. The Yankees have won more than any other MLB team during his tenure. Still, if the Sox went $5 mil over budget for next season, would anybody care? Should fans care? Should fans be demanding JR use the Championship dividend?

QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 27, 2005 -> 10:19 PM) i to my amazement agree with what qwerty had to write and i see where you are going with this. so let me ask you this. would you be like georgie of the yanks and overspend to get players who you think can help??? I think there is a difference between being a fan and being an owner. In almost every instance that a free agent signs, the winning team overpaid. It's just like an auction, the highest bidder, the person who values the item/player the most, wins. So over paying isn't really an issue. I am certain Philly shopped Thome. The Sox won. Why? Because the Sox offered more. So they paid more than anyone else was willing to pay. In this case they overpaid within a reasonable amount. I guess what is unreasonable is in the eyes of the beholder. Getting back to George. The more he throws away money, the more he makes. If you were a Yankee fan, would you be cheering for George to spend less and make more? Last I saw, the Yankees were #1 or #2 in profits, so how could anyone say they are over spending?
