I was very wrong
I felt and wrote after the Thome signing that in a typical Sox move they were going to sign 35-year old + injury @ 7.2 mil *instead of* 29-year old + All-Star + Division MVP @ $12-$15 mil. I thought the chances were slimer than none that Konerko would be a Sox player in 2006. I am happy to admit I was verrrrrrry wrong.

Official: Konerko Signs With White Sox
I am now so excited both for the Konerko signing *AND* the Thome signing. Getting Frank back is probably asking too much at this point

A man and his friend were hunting deer in rural Kentucky near a >>>blacktop highway. "Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching >>>thing I have ever seen. You are the kindest man I have ever known." >>>The hunter shrugged. "Yeah, well, we were married for 35 years."

Rose not on Hall's ballot in final year
I think there needs to be a display/room/area that discusses baseball history and Rose should be discussed there, along with the Black Sox, etc. IMHO the Hall needs to be part of a baseball museum. I will say this, I think betting on baseball, in the manner that Rose did, is less an offense than using steroids when they were banned. Rose betting on the outcome of a game he was not involved in does not effect the competition, a player in that same game on steroids is taking an unfair advantage outside the rules and does effect the competition.

Paulie's offer
At 29, he would be younger than Thome at the end of this contract. I don't have a problem going 5 with Paul, depending on the total dollars. I was expecting 4/$52-$55 so 5/for about the same dollars seems reasonable. Of course he should be offering a home town discount and is he doesn't sign he's a greedy asshole.

Dress shoe question
I was going to pick #3 for you because #1) f***ing with anyone and helping them make a poor choice, is an Internet tradition, and a Soxtalk favorite of mine. #2) I'm guessing you haven't learned to tie shoes yet. #3) If we ever meet in real life and you are wearing those, it would be so damn funny. Kudos for being smart enough to ask the ladies for advice. Your mom would be proud.

Officials wary of border uniforms made in Mexico
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 08:52 PM) I'd settle for giving them a shovel and having a canal dug from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean. And screw over the company with an owner that risked everything to start a canal digging business. The same guy who would be paying for the project via his taxes? This is the problem whenever the government starts running businesses unrelated to a function of the government and is competing with private business. It sounds great on the surface, but, as a taxpayer, do you want these people on *your* payroll? All of a sudden they have government jobs with government benefits, you were going to provide insurance? A friend of mine was forced to lay off 8 workers when his company lost a nice cable assembly contract to a prison system. I am certain voters in the state that put the prisoners to work, were delighted they were learning a skill and paying their own way, but the families effected by the lay off were probably less than enthused about the program. But YAS, I do agree, it just feels good to have them work. And it has plenty of upsides, greater self esteem, job skill development, getting some productivity from our tax dollars. I just don't know how to accomplish that without harming private business that is already providing that service. And come on how about a smiley for the comrade reference??

Mr. Cunningham goes to California...
Let's please take a moment at realize that this is the exception, that thousands of people proudly serve this country in an honest and forthright manner. This is the extreme exception, not the rule. I need only drive about 10 miles south to see the opposite, that small corruption is the norm and expected.

Sadder than Sad Relationships
QUOTE(Mercy! @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 04:36 PM) Hmm. This seems to have evolved into a Marriage Thread. Odd, that natural progression. I sure wish we could do some things to strengthen that sacred bond between a man and a woman. How about a Constitutional Amendment Banning Divorce? Move to Ireland . . .

Which would mean more? Profit or Winning?
QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) i am going to play devil advocate here, ok and please do not take offense. lets say it paulie and timo what is paulie worth and lets say we pay paulie, and for argument sake 16 mil. is this too much to pay. timo ok maybe he is not the best example so lets say juan and if he was a fa. would paying him let say 8 mil be too much? by your statement, we are overpaying b/c he play for us, is a vital part of our org and we only overpaid by a few mil. Let me give you a real answer, we got Thome. It was days until I noticed what he was going to cost the Sox. I wasn't interested in the least. I was interested in where he would hit, where he would field, and the fact he is a solid citizen in the club house. I don't care if he's making $5 mil or $10 mil. If the Astros made more money this season than the Red Sox would it or should it make a difference to any of the fans? When they start publishing the box scores in the financial section, I'll start caring. Until then, I'm not that interested, but now I can see why some fans are so fascinated by it all. Thank you for the education. Counting other people's money just doesn't do anything for me.

Officials wary of border uniforms made in Mexico
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 09:24 AM) So, we keep giving handouts to the poor when our Government could put them to work instead of shipping the jobs to another country. Yep. That makes sense to me. :headshake Government run factories. Nice idea comrade.

So why worry about border patrol uniforms when we are selling military uniforms in stores? :headshake

Sadder than Sad Relationships
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:24 AM) I know your not all that keen on the Kerry emails. You're hoping he introduces you to Hanoi Jane. I am much sadder that George stopped sending out emails. I always looked forward to reading his. I was never a Fonda fan. I thought her anti-war activities were distasteful, and way closer to treason that I'm comfortable with.

Officials wary of border uniforms made in Mexico
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:17 AM) That's typical. You'd think we could have the uniforms made in the US. There aren't too many companies left that could manage the contract. It's all part of being competitive. People would point to a $150 uniform and point out how wasteful it is when they could be made for $95 in Mexico. Keep in mind that until a couple years ago, you could walk into a Military Surplus store and buy a uniform for cheap along with many of the accouterments.

Which would mean more? Profit or Winning?
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:20 AM) LOL. Touche'. Seriously, and maybe it's my age, I can't get excited over a player's contract. I just can't sit here and think wow, we got Thome for $7.2 mil now we can get Inspector Clouseau at $3.6 over 5 with incentives, with a player option at $4.8 and a team option in 2009 for $5.6 unless he averages 120 starts, then he gets $5.8 mil and with the money we save, we can order out for pizza. I'm more, where will he play, where in the batting order, what's he bring that we don't have and what hole did we just create. I don't know where the Sox budget should fall for player salaries, I don't know if they have a ton of fat in the front office that could be trimmed and an extra $3 mil moved to player salaries. I do know that worrying about the team overpaying for someone detracts from my enjoyment. OMG We overpaid $3 million here, the franchise is ruined, we will never reach the playoffs again. But with so many great Sox fans and knowledgeable baseball people here, I wanted to understand the fascination and the excitement of signing a guy to a "good contract". Is it the same as a win on the field?

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 07:18 AM) I really enjoyed your post in the 'grilled cheese sandwich' thread. That's all I'm giving you though. As long as it isn't a political post you are agreeing with. I don't want Kerry to stop sending me emails. That would be the saddest breakup

Which would mean more? Profit or Winning?
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 03:56 AM) C'mon TexSox. You know exactly what people are thinking and why they are thinking it when they express concern about $$$ amounts given to this or that player. This is an issue that has been discussed around here since the beginning of Soxtalk. And embarrassing as this is to admit, I have never understood it. Plus, I have never known what people are thinking until I ask them. But YAS, I am certain you know what I am thinking now.
