As the top spokesperson for the United States, part of his responsibilities is PR. Perhaps we are unappreciated because our Presidents have not taken that role seriously enough through the years. When people protest against the United Stares what are the top three images they use? US Flag Picture/Likeness of the President Picture/Likeness of Uncle Sam. I don't think the President needs to immediately fly to the disaster scene, in fact I think that is sometimes the worst thing to do. I don't even think he needs to go to Washington. But he does need to address the world and show the world what the US is feeling. If he goes skiing or grabs a quickie with an intern, that is what the rest of the world thinks the US feels about the problem. If he cancels his schedule and retreats inside to watch CNN or reruns of Dallas, the world just knows he is mourning and staying abreast of the situation. He does not have the same freedoms in that regard as we do. Symbolically at least, he represents what all of us are feeling. Perhaps unfair, but let's face it, POTUS isn't a fair position. When my brother died, the nest day I was golfing with a buddy. If I was President, that would have been wrong. For me it was a way to cope. There is a lot that goes into being the POTUS. Not every President has the PR skills of Reagan or Clinton. This one clearly lags a bit behind, but that is part of is charm.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 2, 2005 -> 02:10 AM) well, this totally screws me over, i'm not on the tollway every day, however, on my trips to my dads house and to dekalb, which to dekalb will now cost 2.20 to go there and back. I can't afford to put down a 40 dollar down payment even if it does just go back to the tolls. It screws me personally. Yes it does, the drivers who use the tollroad everyday and will invest in an IPass will receive a volume discout for using the tollway everyday. Casual users will pay more. The same way you are screwed at the Cell when you pay full price for a ticket and season ticket holders pay less.

CMT had the original movie on tonight. Damn I love that flick. I was reading up a little on what killed P{ic and it turns out that is almost 100% curable if detected as early as they found it in Pic. Combine that with current knee surgery techniques that would have had Sayers back 100% and I just shake my head at what could have been.

When I saw the blood soaking through Shilling's sock, it reminded me of what he pitched through to get that WS ring.

Anyone using any of the VOIP services? I downloaded glophone and it seems ok. I was even thinking of switching to Time-Warner's phone service. They have my cable and internet service currently.

QUOTE (JimH @ Jan 1, 2005 -> 03:10 PM) Something I learned in high school about the White Sox ... If you park in Lot E at U.S. Cellular which is basically behind right field, look directly east and you'll see Wentworth Gardens housing development, which is low income subsidized housing. Wentworth Gardens is the former site of 39th Street Grounds, which was the predecessor of original Comiskey Park. The White Sox played there from 1900 to 1910, and it is there where the Sox defeated the Cubs in the 1906 World Series. 37th Street dead ends at Wentworth Gardens, in between Parking Lot E and F. Where 37th St. dead ends is roughly the site of where 3rd base used to be. After the Sox moved to Comiskey Park in 1910, South Side Grounds was used for Negro League games and various other school and independent leagues. I'm told there was a fire there which damaged part of the park in 1948 or so, and it was torn down at that time for Wentworth Gardens. Just in case anyone cares about history stuff like that. Thank you. I was stumbled across an article on the history of ballparks in Chicago. It was really interesting, especially the Negro League fields.

QUOTE (SAVVY18 @ Jan 1, 2005 -> 02:11 PM) I'm with you critic. The original deal said the tolls would go away when the road was paid for. When it was, the lawyers found some wording and exploited the loophole into the HUGE scam the tollway association is now. And as you said, the roads do SUCK. And the I-Pass isn't going to help congestion one bit. The problem is where the roads go out to 10 lanes and shrink back to 3 and also have another road merging in at the same time. The only thing that will happen are the I-Pass lanes are going to be longer. How would taking money away from the tollway make it better? The tolls only go towards the tollway, not other roads. Seems like tolls are a fair method of having the users pay for what they use.

I am not convinced that just getting rid of power hitters will magically result in 4-5 runs every night. I still do not see a couple .300+ hitters in the lineup. Maggs was more than power, he also had a solid average. I believe have two guys batting .300 is better than 30 homeruns. Still looking over the pitching staff and prediciting average, good, and great seasons for 3 of the five looks very nice. I feel a lot better on January 1 of 2005 than I did a year ago.

There is some talent there, very cool

I am holding my breath, but this has the potential to be one of the best staffs in White Sox history. There is a lot of talent emassed here. I only hope we find the offense.

QUOTE (winodj @ Jan 1, 2005 -> 10:48 AM) I just love the fact that someone gave Clarence Thomas tires. Really, who gives someone tires? A tire company. Kind of like the Little Drummer Boy Do you think they were Firestone SUV Tires for an Explorer??

QUOTE (winodj @ Jan 1, 2005 -> 10:43 AM) Tolls are cheap in Chicago, even at 80cents. To Leave Jersey and get to Staten Island on the Outerbridge Crossing, 6 dollars. To Leave Brooklyn and get to Staten Island on the Outerbridge Crossing, 8 dollars. US to mexico $2 + or - each way depending on bridge.

IIRC doesn't Illinois have a problem with snow and ice, salt, and freeze and thaw cycles? This makes it very difficult to maintain roads. One of the things I noticed in South Texas is the absence of pot holes on ashalt roads. They just do not happen.
