  1. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 07:00 PM) The burden of proof is definitely on the Sox at this point. This could be an interesting season. I think the Tigers will be even stronger and the Royals could rebound, and of course Cleveland could get hot. I can't wait until the 40 game mark and see who's contendin and who's pretendin.
  2. QUOTE(SEALgep @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 06:41 PM) He could turn out to be a decent DH option as well. I don't know why some people are getting down about this kid. It was a PBTN, who you'd think we were going to get? Looking at how lopsided the trade was, it could have come from AAA. Someone mentioned this is looking more and more like a salary dump. I am beginning to agree.
  3. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 06:27 PM) Played behind Prince Fielder=destroys that theory. Prince was one of the most talked about prospects in Brewers history. Who knows what Travis will pan out too, but please don't play the age card. Now, in the Sox organization, he'll have virtually no pressure and can develop at his own pace. He'll be given every opportunity to succeed. Rotoworld seems to think we did alright with this PTBNL, I'm with them. He was behind more than Fielder. The stuck behind works at AAA, or possibly AA, not at High A. We'll forget about him by Wednesday and if he makes a MLB roster, it will be a neat trivia fact.

The other thing that is ironic is one of the most respected volunteers wears a pony tail. I doubt he asked him to cut it. I had long hair in high school and college. In fact when I was running cross country if I didn't feel the cadence of my hair hitting my shoulder during the 880, I couldn't run.
  5. He was drafted in '01 I wonder if he played college ball somewhere. I couldn't find any college stats.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 06:00 PM) Tex, not trying to start a fight, but did he say he wanted them to be 'junior republicans', or just that he didn't like funky haircuts? Yeah, camp counselor seems like a position where a hairstyle wouldn't matter much, unless maybe the kids attending came from more conservative families, and he thought THEY would have an aversion to long hair, mohawks, hair dyed blue, etc. I am just wondering if by his use of the term 'conservative' to describe hairstyles, you are reading too much into it. Maybe, maybe not. Just askin'. The issue is I think it is insulting to my kid. I dodn't take conservative to mean in the political context. He wants to see kids with very short hair styles. He also asked me to inform one of my assistants to remove his earing around the kids. I refused. He said "conservative hairstyles and dress" in the email. He has on two occasions specifically told my son he should cut his hair. My son passed his Eagle Scout board of review with that hair. The kids are coming from all over the area, mostly working poor to middle class. The resident camp costs $140 for the week. The camp has had declining enrollment each year because of the quality of the staff's instruction and the quality of the facilities and food. I have sat in literally dozens of meetings on why Units aren't using the facility for summer camp and the appearance of the camp staff has never been mentioned once. My son's hair is barely past his ears, not even near his shoulder, and not in his eyes except when wet. This guy wears his hair in a crew cut, has a full beard, and a big chew between the cheek and gum. (to his credit, never around the kids) The issue is more if someone says I won't hire anyone like this or that and this and that describes your child, would you be pissed? I'm taking a general comment and making it personal.

Basically a friend of mine mentioned for an upcoming summer project he wouldn't be hiring any kids who didn't have a conservative haircut. My son happens to have long hair. This guy was probably not thinking specifically about my son when he made the remark but I got pissed (gee big surprise from Tex) and told him off. These kids would be camp counselors for a month, earning sub minimum wage, living in crappy accomodations, eating mass cooked camp food, and putting up with 100+ degree heat. And he wants them to by little Jr. Republicans going off to a summer internship :headshake

  9. Full Apology
  10. QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 04:26 PM) We didn't get equal value from the Brewers. I won't argue that. But it was also a salary dump. without getting rid of Lee, we probably don't get AJ or El Duque. That's the only way he can look at this trade without getting angry Excellent point. With the PTBNL we can call it a salary dump.
  11. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 04:11 PM) What usually happens to a baseball after a game? This can't be the 1st time this has happened. It gets tossed into the equipment bag for batting practice unless a player did something like won his first game, started, etc.
  12. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 04:20 PM) It's better than nothing, but he can't run & I doubt he has any real chance of ever playing 1B for the CWS. So his value to the organiz is basically trade bait. In conclusion we gave Lee away for a specialist reliever who is likely to struggle in the AL, & a speedy OF who had a precipitous decline in his soph year at the plate. I still hate this trade. I was on the fence with this trade and this makes me begin to think we are behind out of the gate. I always liked Lee and I believe his upside is higher. In basketball it always seems whomever received the best player won. In this case, and if that holds true, this may not have been a good trade. Of course this always hinges on how the players perform the following seasons.
  13. I wonder what an acceptable amount of error is in a national election? Zero is obviously an impossibility. Two much and elections are questionable. .05% 1%? I wonder if there are tolerances established. Some of the error is relatively minor. I'll bet we all have friends who have moved and not sent in a change of address and just went back and voted in their old precinct. Perhaps mail in absentee ballots were filled out by friends and relations, etc. I seriously doubt there is a possibility to rig an election on a national or state scale before the election.

  21. Win the division and get steam rolled in the playoffs. We know the drill and are damn good at it. Tag team for the Central for a while now.
  22. That wouldn't surprise me at all. Moving Sosa is the tough part. The Mets are launching the new TV network, like the Yankees, and need some marquee names to sell it. Maggs would work, but Sosa is better.
  23. I think it's going to court and no one will win. If it goes into the stands for a walk off home run, the fan clearly has ownership. I doubt this has ever happened before. BTW don't forget our alter ego http://www.talksox.com if you want to chat this up with Red Sox fans.
  24. QUOTE(Mr. Zero @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 03:10 PM) Yeah, no s***. We could be down 5 and then up 5 in no time. With all the small ball we'll be playing, it will take a 2 hour inning to cross 10 runs
