Growing Trend in Higher Education
I just learned my University, part of the University of Texas system, will be dropping the core requirement of a three hour sophomore literature class and adding a two hour diet, health, and nutrition class. Basically you will be able to earn a university degree without reading a drop of fiction. At first I assumed that this was a localized thing, but I've learned it is a growing trend in higher education. What I find interesting is Marx theorized that in a capitalistic society eventually education will be focused solely on producing workers to be exploited by the owners. That the disciplines that separate us from animals, the humanities will be devalued. Since a knowledgable working class is harder to exploit eventually we will have a dumbing down of the working class. This seems like a nice step along that path. Books are dangerous in the wrong hands. Blind submission is safer. I know a little hyperbole.

Scott Boras thinks the new FA system is corrupt, unfair
His advantage is also the player's advantage. People seem to think he has magical negotiating powers. That teams just fall under some spell and do whatever he wants them to do. Somehow fans see what he does but some of the most successful business people in America collapse at the sight of Boras and just do what he wants. The issue I see is those people that complain about Boras should appreciate and applaud Lebron James. He's the ultimate anti-Boras example.

Who would you pick to headline a movie if you were director?
Denzel Washington. He's also on my list of the three guys I would accept a date from if he asked.

I'll never ubderstand the Boras hatred. He makes millions for his clients, exactly what I would want in an agent.

Wizards' Jason Collins
Really, it took this long? http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/29/sport/collins-gay/?hpt=hp_t1 Cool that Kobe and Nash tweeted support. I guess he may need it, sad as that makes me typing it.

How Much Rope Does Dunn Have?
Seriously, how bad does he have to get before the team chokes down the contract? He truly may be through as a MLB player. No hyperbole. Pick a price point, but at the MLB min, he's sitting at home watching games on the TV. I'm guessing anything short of $2,00,000 and he's done not #5 Dunn

How Much Rope Does Dunn Have?
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 23, 2013 -> 01:49 PM) So you'd leave him 8th if he hit .300 with 50 homers the rest of the year? With those stats, I'd let Kannapolis keep him in at any spot in the order

Shooting in Manchester, IL
5>3 Waiting for the 24/7 coverage and live coverage of the manhunt If he used a bomb and not a gun, perhaps the coverage would be different. Or a major city and not small town America.

How Much Rope Does Dunn Have?
Every contract is a gamble. Both sides have expectations as far as performance. If Dunn improved then the team would have "won" that contract and he loses in relation to the market. If he stayed about the same, meh, it was probably fair. In this case, he won and the team lost. If there was a reason for him suddenly doing so poorly that he knew about, then it was borderline fraud. Usually veterans get the big contract because they are more stable. But he's making Billy Botch seem like a nice memory.

Connecticut school shooting
The part of this I find silly is the argument that criminals will not follow the law so it wouldn't stop x, y, or z from happening. Of course not. By definition criminals break laws, that is why we call them criminals. Laws establish the punishment. Capone didn't pay taxes on his criminal profits and went to jail. Of course criminals will not pay taxes, but it's why he is in jail. So when the police catch someone with a gun and no background check, etc. or any other legal nicety, the criminal does time. No need to wait for him to commit a more violent crime.

Explosions at end of Boston Marathon
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 01:29 PM) Anywho, federal charges filed against him today, for using a weapon of mass destruction against persons and property in the U.S. resulting in death. Charges can qualify for the death penalty. Yeah! We captured him alive! Now let's kill him! I'd rather he be a lab rat for study for the rest of his life.

Should I go?
Why daughter is moving to the Lakeview neighborhood. I will be visiting the first weekend in August when the Sox are in Detroit. The Cubs will be playing the Dodgers. We could about walk to Wrigley from LSD. Why wife and my daughter have never been to Wrigley.

Explosions outside of Waco, Texas
I just ran through this with my students. Comparing the West, TX to the Boston Marathon bomb. Three dead versus 15 or more. About the same number of injuries. A couple buildings with damaged windows, buildings and homes destroyed. Which will be in the news for weeks or months then anniversary stories a year later and which is already out of the news in some areas? Boston will raise millions for a city that will survive without the help. West, TX may be destroyed.

The usual, we will find who did this and hold them responsible, thanked the responders, pointed out today is Patriot Day. We'll pull together, etc. We'll keep you informed.

It must be said - Hawk Harrelson has to go
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 11, 2013 -> 03:20 PM) I think you do need a mix. If you are all sabermetrics and nothing else, or all old school scouting and no sabermetrics, I think you aren't going to win. The perfect formula is a mix, and how that mix is weighted probably fluxuates year to year. Moneyball really got it going, but one of the reasons for Beane's success early was he had the pitching in place. He made some wise moves based on sabermetrics, but might not have had Mulder, Hudson, Zito if he didn't depend as much on scouting earlier. I agree. If your manager/GM organization plays all the averages, you have an average organization with average results. You want your team to be the above average.

Asking her Father/Popping the Question
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 11, 2013 -> 11:46 AM) Oh, I completely get it. I just find it shallow and nothing more than a dog and pony show. And since you love tradition so much, if you do this, I sure hope you waited until you were married to have sex for the first time, too. Oh, wait, you like one tradition but not the other? I forgot...it's all about respect. Please, thank you, RSVPs, and most polite social conventions are all shallow, dog and pony shows. It seems however, those dog and pony shows separate our behavior from actual dogs and ponies.

Asking her Father/Popping the Question
We decided to go get a certificate of common law marriage so we could have the rights and benefits. No permission necessary. My first wife i followed the asking first route. It seemed cool, I liked the tradition. Although I don't recall if I told him or asked.

Triggers that remind you of the White Sox

Triggers that remind you of the White Sox
Steam ''hey hey goodbye'' in the obvious category. In the obscure it would be driving back home from South Padre Island around eleven. Knowing I'd get home around 12:30 or so. Those expressway drives remind me of leaving a Sox, Hawks, or Bulls game, same time frame.
