This year give him enough ABs to set some records.

While I am in no way cheering for a player to suffer a career ending injury . . .
  3. Their technology only has to be good enough so that it will only take losing five of them to kill one of ours.
  4. I don't see it driving anything further underground. It is a longshot, but there are people that call for help. Some need a nudge in that direction. This could be that nudge. And remember you are trying to help maybe 5 or 6 students in the entire district that may be contemplating suicide. It isn't like dozens killed themselves. I would be surprised if there wasn't some decent science behind it.
  5. Any idea what the team is doing with that $6,900,000.00?
  6. We have both targeted and random searches. As soon as students know the dog is on campus they suddenly have to go to the bathroom. I suggested we just wait in the bathroom and nail them there.
  7. QUOTE (farmteam @ May 29, 2013 -> 09:46 AM) I can't believe the school actually thought this was a good idea in the first place. Remember this is a district that has experienced a much higher than normal suicide rate. Determining which students may have a propensity towards harming themselves is a worthy goal. Unfortunately, the tip offs are self destructive behaviors that not many would want to admit. Thinking about it a bit, if someone is looking for help, they might just admit it on a school required form. The school administration probably also know that many students will not incriminate themselves, but some may. Therefor, a teacher discouraging, or making it cool to resist, doesn't help that part of the process. This reminds me a bit about a seminar I went to on bombs in buildings. The ATF agent recommended if we received a bomb threat to ask where was the bombm what did it look like, when will it explode, etc. When we laughed he pointed out that the caller called to warn us and it is possible they truly do want to prevent a tragedy. Counterintuitive I know, but it has played out that way.
  8. I love teaching my students their rights.
  9. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 28, 2013 -> 12:43 PM) I don't think comparing and contrasting the NFL and the MLB and their handling of busts brings anything to the argument. The two leagues operate differently. True. Especially if you factor in guaranteed contracts, yes in MLB and no in the NFL.
  10. Laughs for precisely your point. You can't take it too seriously. It also highlights the difficulty in being a GM.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 28, 2013 -> 12:39 PM) nothing more popular in Chicago, than the guy who isn't actually playing in Chicago. Although I suspect every city has than same phenomenon happening.
  12. Bump for laughs.
  13. Did anyone expect Flowers to be better than what we had last season? The difference between veterans and guys coming up is you generally know what to expect from the veteran. If Flowers is healthy, he's got the job for the summer. I'm hoping to see some signs of hope.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2013 -> 06:41 PM) Prospects not panning out in KC is the rule, not the exception. Which is one reason I have never gotten that much excited at the MLB draft and my pulse barely bumps at guys that are 26-40 on the 40-man roster. I'll take prospects for MLB ready players almost everyday.
  15. Perhaps there is some legitimacy in looking at the line up and deciding that if we're going to win (division, league, WS) then this is the order and line up that we need to make it happen and running that lineup out there each day. We know that without Dunn and Konerko hitting like middle of the order guys this team is not winning the division. I'm not convinced that a lineup of the moment would be more effective. For bad or worse, Dunn will get his cleanup ABs this season.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2013 -> 04:18 PM) I wonder if you contacted Marvel if they've whipped up anything specifically to allow for the use of their material in lesson plans (or if they might not do so if you asked). Thanks for the idea. This time of year I have lots of free time to check on stuff like this.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2013 -> 09:13 AM) And by the time they're in college, this storyline might well be a major motion picture. True.
  18. I have been looking for opportunities to include graphic novels into my 8th grade classes. The problem is being able to differentiate the lesson for high, and low, achieving students. A story plot like this, with cross discipline possibilities, could be just the ticket.
  19. BTW, do most people consider "Team" to be the 25-man or 40-man rosters? I'vew always considered it the 40 for discussions like this. It seems like, and I really wouldn't mind of someone disprooved or prooved this point, but I can't think of an instant where a mid season trade really made that much of a difference.
  20. Happy Birthday all y'all
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 25, 2013 -> 12:19 PM) This happens everywhere. Augusta for example. GP
  22. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 24, 2013 -> 10:07 AM) No one cares about this, because the boy scouts are lame. I do find it odd how much non members do care about these membership issues. For example, you bothered to open the thread to reply. I wonder if you would have if the thread was about Heritage Girls, Baden Powell Scouts, or Royal Rangers?
  23. The image is out of date. And even with understanding the modern BSA, some people do think the current activities like camping, surfing, SCUBA, whitewater rafting, sailing, climbing, rappelling, backpacking, shooting sports, equestrian, jet skis, etc are lame. Or that helping other people and doing your best are outdated in today's society. It certainly is not for every family, it never has been, and never will be. For my family, my son enjoyed Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. My son and daughter enjoyed Venturing. We've made lifelong friends and had more great times than I can remember.
  24. If RV was managing for one game, very poor move. Managing for the week, questionable. Managing an entire (staff) team for an entire season, the move wasn't that bad.
  25. Actually the molestation myth is not part of the discussion. It still comes down to the major owners of Troops, the LDS Church, and the Catholic Church are not fully on board. BSA sells a ministry to churches. If you allienate your customers you do not survive. It will take very delicate maneuvering to keep the LDS church in the fold. Boy Scouts is the official youth ministry of the LDS church. They pay and register 100% of their young men into the program. They carry a lot of weight. And as the overall membership numbers have declined, that meant the LDS percentage of the total membership increases. There are some idiots that sometimes get covered by the media as being worried about molestation and such, but they are on the fringes and not really a part of the process except to possibly scare some people. BSA has a coed program for youth 13-21 and they deal with these issues regularly, so even if there were two guys dating in a Troop, there are established practices in place to guide the leaders.
