QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 6, 2013 -> 10:27 PM) OK, we have to stop thinking of war in terms of easy outcomes. Dropping $10m bombs out of $1b airplanes is always going to be expensive. I don't even know what it costs to empty the Sixth Fleet out of Naples into a holding pattern in the Med, much less start using it for war, but I cannot imagine it being cheap. America's business is war. The military industrial complex is a huge part of our economy. We have to start depleting our inventories of disposable weapons. I do not believe our economy can do well if we ain't dropping those $10m bombs and losing a few $10b planes. Eisenhower nailed it in 1959.- North Korea
Two scenarios 1) Two bat ass crazy m-fers getting together. Rodman getting back in the news, K-J jock sniffing. 2) The State Department is using the one guy on the planet that K-J seems to like, Rodman, as an unofficial diplomat. Wierd. Rodman did tweet a couple months ago asking K-J to "Do him a solid and release Bae".- Ozzie
With Ozzie I am more inclined to believe a change is legit. I can't see him pulling off an insincere change like that. Still if I was a GM, and interested in Ozzie, I wouldn't give him the keys to the MLB club first. Bench coach, AA, etc would be my try. That would be a test of being humble.- Hillary
QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 03:44 PM) McCain would have been a good VP He should have been Pres in Bush's place. The push attack that Bush's campaign pulled was a very low blow.- Hillary
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 01:43 PM) I hated the way he seemed to think 'reaching across the aisle' was to go like gangbusters at your own side. If he went after Obama half as hard as he does his supposed fellow Republicans on some issues, it could have been an interesting contest. I wish more politicians had the opportunity to "go like gangbusters" at their own side. That's how change comes about. Republicans yelling at Dems doesn't work. Dems yelling at Dems works better. And vice versa of course. What we have today is defend your team, right or wrong, and attack the other team, right or wrong.- Syria
I agree with Alpha on this one. I'll also add, what is said in open meetings like this is window dressing. The real debate is behind the scenes, it is one on one. I doubt any veteran Washington politico was surprised by any of the Q&A. It's a formula they are going through. At the worse, in my book, it shows that McCain, like many, has already made up his mind.- Ozzie
I am convinced, without any hard evidence, that Ozzie has drinking, thinking, and parenting problems. He could have been the most popular baseball person in the history of Chicago, yet he pissed it away. He wasn't as bad as we think, and not nearly as good as some think. He got too much credit for 2005 and too much blame for, well everything on the field after that. He has a drinking problem. Did I mention that before?- Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 2, 2013 -> 08:54 PM) Use something like Connectify to turn your laptop into a hotspot. Basic college student stuff, man Even us old guys can handle that.- Hillary
On the surface the Palin pick looked desperate and pandering. The majority of voters never leave the surface. I have always been a McCain fan. I've respected his abilities to work across the aisle without giving up too much of his principles.- North Korea
BTW there is debate whether Machiavelli typed that book in green, or if it was to be taken literally. It does seem that it is taken literally in NK.- North Korea
Just read chapter 3 of "The Prince" by Niccolo Machiavelli and you will understand the genius of how NK is ruled.- Syria
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 31, 2013 -> 04:20 PM) Here is the national security team meeting today to discuss bombing Syria: The question...do you ignore everyone else and only listen to what Hagel says or do you ignore everything Hagel says based on his attire? s***, and I was having a hard time deciding what to have for dinner. I truly do not believe I would want to be at that table.- Syria
Duke, you assert they are an inferior culture. In what areas are they inferior? From your argument it seems you are replying they are somehow less human than Americans. Are we smarter than them? Stronger? And is that just naturally born Americans or are our immigrants included? I can think of so many questions, is this evolutionary? Selected breeding? How did humans in America become superior to humans in other parts of the world?- New Semester ~ Whatcha takin?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 29, 2013 -> 01:20 PM) Obviously very creepy, but probably the best first-person narrative I've ever read. One of the things we are exploring is what does a person get out of reading. The discussion for any of these books will be interesting, but how to explain Lolita?- New Semester ~ Whatcha takin?
As I work towards my MA in Lierature, which is hopefully a step towards piling it high and deep, I have a Literature and Culture class that will focus on the Kennedy assasination. My first assignmnet is a book written by one of JFK's mistresses called Mafia Moll. Judith Campbell Exner is the author. My other class is a Comparative Lit class centering around "unlikable characters". Required reading include Jude the Obscure, Lolita, Madam Bovary, and a few others. I am liking my choices this semester.- "off the field" issues blamed for Ramirez's high error
And how many players use their sport (employees work) to get their mind off their troubles? Yeah, I have some compassion and empathy, but sucking is sucking and at some level players and employees are responsible for their work. The comparison is kind of unfair between "regular jobs" and athletes. There are not that many people on the planet that can do the things that Ramirez and Dunn were hired to do and there are severe restrictions on their employer's ability to hire a replacement, even part time. With great compensation comes greater expectations. These aren't hourly Joe Sixpacks.- Konerko on waivers today
We may be thinking of two different situations. Yes, under the scenario that a team claims him. But if he clears waivers the Sox can work out any trade, which could include the Sox eating the deferred money. After I posted again I reread the earlier posts. Damn, it's too early and I haven't finished my first cup of coffee- Konerko on waivers today
Isn't the last 6 years negotiable as part of any trade terms? Teams eat salary from players they trade all the time, why would this be different?- Engagement Rings
I was at a wedding where an hour into the reception a bridesmaid announced to her husband that she wanted a divorce. Two hours in she announced she was moving in with a close female friend and they were in love. Three hours in the bride started throwing punches at her for ruining the wedding and taking center stage. Best damn wedding I have ever been to.- 2012-2013 Official NHL thread
QUOTE (MEANS @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 12:08 PM) I got to design the locker room t-shirt that they received last night, first time my favorite team won when I had the locker room design. What a great feeling! Cool. How many are you passing around here? Lol- NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) The statement from the government of Hong Kong is quite remarkable. "You didn't do everything correctly so we let him out...and by the way...about you listening in on our phone calls...." I did find that wonderfully ironic.- NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden
Hiding in Moscow just cost you any sympathy Mr. Snowden. I am now on the government's side and want you to face trial. Let's allow a judge to sort this out.- El Caballo el retiro
