  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 25, 2013 -> 12:19 PM) This happens everywhere. Augusta for example. GP
  2. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 24, 2013 -> 10:07 AM) No one cares about this, because the boy scouts are lame. I do find it odd how much non members do care about these membership issues. For example, you bothered to open the thread to reply. I wonder if you would have if the thread was about Heritage Girls, Baden Powell Scouts, or Royal Rangers?
  3. The image is out of date. And even with understanding the modern BSA, some people do think the current activities like camping, surfing, SCUBA, whitewater rafting, sailing, climbing, rappelling, backpacking, shooting sports, equestrian, jet skis, etc are lame. Or that helping other people and doing your best are outdated in today's society. It certainly is not for every family, it never has been, and never will be. For my family, my son enjoyed Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. My son and daughter enjoyed Venturing. We've made lifelong friends and had more great times than I can remember.
  4. If RV was managing for one game, very poor move. Managing for the week, questionable. Managing an entire (staff) team for an entire season, the move wasn't that bad.
  5. Actually the molestation myth is not part of the discussion. It still comes down to the major owners of Troops, the LDS Church, and the Catholic Church are not fully on board. BSA sells a ministry to churches. If you allienate your customers you do not survive. It will take very delicate maneuvering to keep the LDS church in the fold. Boy Scouts is the official youth ministry of the LDS church. They pay and register 100% of their young men into the program. They carry a lot of weight. And as the overall membership numbers have declined, that meant the LDS percentage of the total membership increases. There are some idiots that sometimes get covered by the media as being worried about molestation and such, but they are on the fringes and not really a part of the process except to possibly scare some people. BSA has a coed program for youth 13-21 and they deal with these issues regularly, so even if there were two guys dating in a Troop, there are established practices in place to guide the leaders.
  6. As the face of the owners, he's not nearly as interesting as Bill, but overall I believe the club did well to have him as owner. DeBartolo was someone I really hoped would get the club, but this worked out fine. There aren't too many good owners, I would put JR in the upper 1/4.
  7. QUOTE (southsidepride15 @ May 22, 2013 -> 11:56 AM) Tickets right behind home plate tonight, never seen Sale pitch, and he is scratched. Why God, why do you hate me!?!? That sucks.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 22, 2013 -> 11:55 AM) Sometimes there is no answer that isn't complete s***. Sanctions don't really punish the people at the top, they punish millions of civilians. Given the choice of punishing innocents or helping them, I believe we should help the innocent. But, in the darkness of my heart, I really prefer jenk's idea.
  9. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 21, 2013 -> 03:24 PM) I hate people that publicize donations/charity work UNLESS it's done with the intent to bring exposure to a cause. Really? As someone who raised money for a living, the named donations helped the organization more than those without. It's the bandwagon affect. People think that if X thinks it is a good cause, than they will trust you as well. I can mulitiply a recognizable name or position's donation a lot easier than a no name donation. I talked more than a few people into allowing us to publicize the donation who wished to remain anonymous. So it isn't always the person involved.
  10. What about the 94 year young woman whose home was destroyed by the 1999 and 2013 tornadoes? Wow. And she was smiling for the cameras and taking it all in stride. I guess that attitude is how you live to be 94.
  11. QUOTE (farmteam @ May 1, 2013 -> 11:28 AM) No. There's a difference between "giving a place to a minority in a school/company" (ie, affirmative action) and minorities actually succeeding in those arenas. Our country does a lot with the former, but early education is still so terrible that the latter is disproportionately difficult. But like Shack said, it's easy for me as a privileged white male to sit here and write all this without living it. Level the start and not the finish. The biggest obstacle I see is using property values to determine school funding. It is one factor that perpetuates poverty. The poor have less to spend on education than the rich.
  12. QUOTE (black jack @ May 20, 2013 -> 10:47 PM) Sell to Mark Cuban. Hello 300 million dollar payroll! Put JR in the Shark's Tank and see if Cuban buys a share. I'd buy tickets to watch a Mark Cuban owned, Ozzie Guillen managed team. That's entertainment.
  13. I don't believe I've watched a player enjoying playing any sport as much as Mark looked like he enjoyed playing baseball.
  14. Two sled dogs hitched together (could also be horses)
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 16, 2013 -> 03:09 PM) At the end of the day local governments make too much money off of DUIs to take steps that could end their highly profitable enforcement measures. So how would you make drunk driving penalties harsher? It seems like raising fines is the best for everyone. Jail time costs people jobs, stress on families, etc. Here part of the fines are made as donations to not for profits like the Boys and Girls Clubs and the local Animal Shelter.

Listening to Jude the Obscure, a free librivox.org recording. Nice. Even though they are not professional recordings they are clean and error free. I'm getting a head start on next semester's reading list.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 16, 2013 -> 09:38 AM) No...but your decision making might be impaired enough to decide you can order that 4th or 5th drink and still drive home. Agreed The reason that there are no simple solutions is the more you drink the more your judgement slips. People don't usually begin making better decisions the more they drink. And the fines as money maker issue is interesting. The counterpoint to that is we've also been pushing for longer and longer (harsher) jail time for all sorts of crimes, which costs more. So I see the larger fines more in line with harsher sentences than as a money maker.
  18. Kids behavior gets out of hand in hurry. Something as silly as holes in jeans have become a major source of distraction here. It is so annoying trying to gain the attention of the class while the boys are discussing whether they could see some girls underwear or WHAT!!!! through the holes in her jeans. So why should the school have to deal with jeans with holes?
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 12, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) Sorry, Tex. Have they raised enough money to have a funeral? How does something like that work? The body remains somewhere until you tell them if you can pay or not? Yes they did. There were a few fundraisers and a couple annonymous donors came through. I was on my way to the funeral when I heard a good friend had passed away, so I just went home and hid. And yes, the funeral home will hold the body. Sadly, our community has experience with this.
  20. The passenger was sober. She could have driven.
  21. So this is the driver's second DUI arrest. He had one in 2010 that he still has not gone to court for. In my small county there are over 4,500 pending DUI cases. They just can't get to them all.
