  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2012 -> 02:55 PM) When someone calls you a quitter, that would piss most people off. I'm not so certain I agree with you on this. Let's try a test. Quitter!

    MLK Day

Plus there is a one hour edutainment feature on his life that we are required to view. One teacher is working with his "I Have a Dream" speech.

    MLK Day

We are required to teach at least one MLK lesson. Usually the kids get a day full of them. At first I felt it was a little strange, but I've come to embrace teaching on this day. I believe King would have approved.
  4. One Ozzie is enough for any organization, the problem becomes, he spawns orthers to be just like him, and that will not work long term.

    MLK Day

I usually teach Valley of Tears on this day, as a way to bring the Civil Rights movement closer to home for my students. The streaming site that had it, isn't available, so I am working on LBJ and his legacy. He does seem to get overlooked. If not for Vietnam, history would have been kinder to his presidency.
  6. Thanks to the list I picked up the latest Wilco CD, much better than I expected.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 13, 2012 -> 04:45 PM) Federal judge rules that Santorum, Gingrich, Perry and Huntsman missed their chance to be on the Virginia ballot, and furthermore missed their window to file an injunction. So as it stands, only Romney and Paul will be on the VA GOP primary ballot. There may be appeals, but it doesn't look favorable for them. This seems like a terrible loss to the voters in Virginia who will not be allowed the same choices as voters in other states.
  8. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 12:28 AM) I was pleasantly surprised by the newest Chickenfoot album. Obviously Satriani and Chad Smith are going to hold down their own, but I thought Hagar actually did a nice here as well. Of course Michael Anthony is never going to be any great shakes as a bassist, but it's kinda funny to see him making relevant music when the other 3/4 of the original VH lineup haven't done anything of relevance in at least the last 15 years. Hagar reminds me more of a novelty act, although not as bad as DLR. Both of them would have done well in Vaudville

I have an e-book reader (Nook) for my guilty pleasure reads. I am a permiscious reader lol. I buy most of my better literature in hardcover at used book stores or eBay.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 03:14 PM) Point one. In order to have labor, you have to have an investor class willing to invest. Criminalizing profits isn't going to create jobs. And without labor, there would be nothing to invest in. Once we moved from a society that was 100% self employed, both sides needed each other. We have to look at why humans created governments to see where society should be involved in business affairs.
  11. I am always intrigued how someone climbs up in the ballots. Their accomplishments have not changed. I think the sending a message stuff about not being a first ballot HoF member is kind of lame, but I understand it. I think their would have been less anti-Bonds stuff if he hit "only" 596 homeruns and not surpassed a couple of non steroid icons. He probably would have had an easier time. If the all-time hits leader can be left out of the hall, I image the all-time homerun leader could to.
  12. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 5, 2012 -> 07:28 PM) If I was Iran, I would definitely try to get nukes +2 You are a player as soon as you have one and the ability to send it somewhere. People answer your calls, return your messages.
  13. He's playing to win. This is his last race IMHO. I'm still feeling someone knocks Romney out but a third person reaps the rewards.
  14. Instead of picking about trying to break a tie, think about how many rookies there have been and how amazing those seasons are.
  15. He's Dennis Rodman. You hate him unless he's on your team, and even thwen you might not like him. He would be better liked if he had a posse, drank more, and perhaps shot someone.
  16. I am not certain if it is technology has gotten more fool proof or changes faster, but it seems as soon as I master fixing one problem, it stops being a problem and something new takes its place. An example is when my home network needed a little tweaking. It had been working fine for three years. They changed everything in those three years. I haven't built a pc in ten years, I am helping my son, and probably have less of a clue than he does. I'm reduced to that sad little confirmation that gives him the confidence to go ahead. Something as simple as thermal grease on the CPU's heatsink. Now it is preapplied at the factory. And why haven't they standardized front panel connections to MOBOs yet?
  17. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 03:18 PM) I still can not figure out how the hell he communicates, or rather, how a sensor that detects his cheek muscles could possibly figure out what he is trying to say. As I understand it, it is actually predictive text, he is clicking letters until the correct ones pop up. In a TED Talk it took him 7.5 minutes to complete an answer live. Still cool, but less amazing to me.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 01:28 PM) Wanting to do some fairly low impact reading over the holidays I got around to reading the Hunger Games trilogy. Very enjoyable. I am teaching the first book in the series. My 8th graders really seem to enjoy it. They are finally understanding the parallels to reality TV shows.

I read Cold Wind this past week while huddled in a very cold tent in Big Bend. I won't spoil it for you, but the ending exceeded my expectations. Not what I was expecting but better. My gf was reading Free Fire which is the only other one of his I have read. Which btw got me hooked. I was looking for a book set in Yellowstone, because I will be visiting there this summer.

His writing matched the setting better than any book I can remember reading. I did struggle to sleep last night. Weird dreams and waking up disoriented. It was simultaneously a very easy read and a difficult one. Lots of layers. I am planning on reading No Country for Old Men after Lonesome Dove. I am also filling in some books I should have read, but somehow avoided. Lord of the Flies is in the que as well. I kind of took a break from any real literature and read a couple C.J. Box books (very good vacation reads) and a couple Clive Cussler Dirk Pitt books.
  22. Does anyone believe it is possible to not be perceived as hypocritical on anything? People push this to extremes. Unless you support something to the extremist level, someone will brand you as a hypocrite. Someone doesn't think that the animal shelter should euthanize dogs and cats? Well you better have 25 dogs and a hundred cats if you are that concerned or else you look like a hypocrite.
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 6, 2012 -> 12:33 PM) Or a dedicated home a/v store, but it'd be a pretty dick move to use them for their expertise and then buy elsewhere. It does give the store a chance. If you never walk in, they have zero chance. To be fair, I think you should be smart about it. Pick a slower time. But most store owners I know, while frustrated by customers walking out without buying anything, are far more frustrated when customers never come in. They recognize there are other purchases that the customer may make later that they would have also lost out on if the customer never stopped in.

This one usually dies a quick death, but why not try? I just finished Cormac McCarthy's The Road and it was every bit as good as the reviews. The writing fit so tight with the mood and tone of the piece. I finished it in a couple evenings and seriously had trouble sleeping last night. I have not seen the movie, and probably will resist renting it. My son presented it to me this Christmas, I hope he isn't hoping I die.
