All Things Rick Hahn
It is very rare to get a FA and not be the highest bidder. If the player produces better than projected, the team wins. If he plays to projection, the team over paid because they were the high bidder. If he performs lower than expected, the team loses and they seriously over paid. Two out of three the team is the loser.

Jim Hendry is out as GM
From a distance he didn't look to bad. I was thinking along the same lines as Balta and was surprised by the early posts.

Mark Buehrle New Contract
I find it interesting that we talk about how long Mark wants to pitch. One of the things I love about the guy is he always seems like he is having fun. Yeah, they stopped the tarp sliding, but I believe he will want to pitch as long as he is able. I am not that concerned about his desire, despite some of his comments. I attribute those comments to mean he has a pretty good grasp on life.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 05:05 PM) If you want to argue that a 3 day old fetus can survive on its own, feel free. A newborn is incapable of surviving on its own. The problem I always have with using "survive on its own" as a criteria is a newborn needs someone or some animal to provide it food. Which last I checked is kind of an important thing. If the answer was neat and easy, we wouldn't still be debating abortion. Lots of pretty smart people look at the same facts and come up with different conclusions. And what a hodgepodge of laws we have. In the abstract a woman is attacked on the street and her "bag of cells" is killed. She is heartbroken and good minded citizens want justice for the mom and the "bag of cells". But what if the woman (can't call her mom) was on her way to receive an abortion? Does the attacker deserve punishment for killing the "bag of cells"? Now we would have the prosecutor asking the woman, hey how much did you want to have this baby?

Indiana State Fair stage collapses
I am interested in the differences between the left and the right here. These structures are not inspected, should they be? I am assuming that the liberals here would be leaning that way, the public has to be protected. I am also assuming the conservatives will believe that we can't afford to inspect every temp stage that gets put up. The cost would be too high, that this is an isolated tragedy. Do we want government in our lives inspecting temporary stages like this?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 07:46 PM) Like I said, I want someone that doesn't turn to fairy tales and mythology to fix the answers to tough problems. That's straight up lunacy. So what are appropriate ways for someone to find ways to problems? I am still finding it curious that you believe thoughtful meditation and prayer are not useful tools. Perhaps you do not understand prayer. Which part of this do you object to "Lord, this certainly is a fine mess you have trusted me with, but I have faith there is a solution, there is always a solution. I've been thinking about solutions and came up with these three. A causes this, B causes this, C causes this. . . ." Soon he arrives at what he'll do. Obviously you believe man is the mostly highly developed being and God is a myth. So basically a person at prayer would simply be analyzing a problem. Whether a person believes the answers were divinely inspired, or just of his own imagination, does not change the usefulness of the ideas. In fact, since you do not believe in a higher power, than the ideas that happen while in prayer are of the person's own making, same for everyone. I prefer good ideas no matter how the person arrives at them. Is it ok to come up with an idea while walking? Taking a dump? Gardening? Eating hotdogs at a baseball game? Solutions to problems can pop into our minds at anytime. For some people meditating on a problem (praying), giving it careful and thoughtful consideration, is one tool they use. I guess some people always mock the unknown, and this is unknown to you.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 07:58 PM) Where's the part where he relies on God to solve the nation's problems? And the part where he appoints creationists to remove evolution from textbooks? Exactly. Where did Perry actually rely on God? He prays, just like every President has said he does.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 02:58 PM) What you actually do is WOO (drill baby drill!!)... long enough to get ourselves in a different position for other sources of energy besides oil. But why use that logic when all you folks just want to make sure we continue to depend on foreign oil and pay through the nose for it? Why do you believe that we could produce oil for less than buying it overseas? Name anything that America can produce cheaper than overseas? There is a reason that US producers started investing so big in the Middle East. $$$$ bigger profits $$$$ The same reason Zenith isn't producing TVs here, why Detroit is all but dead, why IBM isn't the world's #1 maker of computers. What US company would undercut the competition by even 10% on a commodity that we need?

Five confirmed dead. How sad. Moments before the collapse it was suggested that concert goers move to another location. Sadly, it was the folks with the best tickets who stayed.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 07:21 PM) How could you trust someone who's governing tactics include running away (i.e., secession) or deferring to a higher being? And if I need spirituality I'll go run over to the neighborhood church. I need someone who's actually going to effectively govern and has some actual ideas. Being prepared to run away from a bad deal would have served us well in Vietnam and Afghanistan. Mock spirituality all you want, but we have never elected someone without it, including our current President who played that card pretty hard. IIRC, and I do, Carter also played it well. Even Clinton gave it a wink and a nod. I am a little surprised as I sit here and think about it, but the Dem Presidents have embraced it more than say Reagan or Bush Sr. Jobs ~ Texas created them better than any other state during Perry's terms. Hard to dispute that. And that is what the rest of the field and Obama will have to deal with.
