  1. I sometimes look at my students and wonder if . . .
  2. I was just reading a different article about the same thing. It reminds me that the tax rates mean nothing if there are enough ways to reduce the rate.
  3. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 09:52 AM) given the fact that we have some borderline starters in the 3, 4 (EJaxx, Gavin) spot and MB is getting on in years, That's the border between really good and great, right?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 05:28 PM) Again, I can't help it if you perceive it that way. Do you guys really believe I sit here with a blade at my wrists over f***ing baseball? I'm not certain if you do, I don't know you, but the screen name Jordan4life does sound like someone that is just sitting there waiting for something bad to happen so it can be posted. Jordan4life sounds like someone who is constantly worried something bad is going to happen. That may be the exact opposite of you personally, I only know what I read from what I consider a fictional character, Jordan4life.
  5. Price alone isn't driving the switch to on-line purchases. Convenience and selection is also a big factor. Many of you live in or near a major city, that is not the case for many Americans. Finding the right item has people jumping on-line. Right in the comfort of your home, every possible item in the world is available. Try matching that anywhere else. Avoiding crowds has people jumping on-line. Unlike catalog and mail order sales, buying on-line is quicker and easier, there's an ap for that! But no matter what reasons people have for buying on-line, the sales tax laws in place are unfair to states and to businesses. Currently companies have to collect sales tax on any "in-state" purchases. That is a great reason to not locate in large states. Sales taxes are a major source of income for states. The more people buy on-line, the less sales tax comes into a state. There needs to be a national sales tax that states share in. One single tax rate, one payee. Companies would have an easy time computing and remitting the payments. Consumers would all be charged equally. That would be simpler than brick and mortar stores that have to track state, county, and local sales tax rates.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 12:53 PM) Buying bottled tap water that may be subject to even less regulations than municipal water is still a dumb idea. But I really do shake my head at people who buy case after case of bottled water even though they get Lake Michigan water at home. When I first moved to McAllen the water was outside of EPA guidelines and tasted funny. Buying 5 gallon water bottles sucked, but we drank more water.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 07:44 PM) Don't know what your problem with me is as of late. You could go the hi8is route, though it's clearly obvious he hasn't really put me on ignore, and that would be the end of it. In one thread I'm supposedly an 8-year troll. Now I just invent things to make up so I can hate on the Sox. If you say so. I don't even know you, but it seems like every thread I've gone into has a post from you about how the team sucks, mistakes they made, how this ir that will be bad, etc. So I don't have a problem with you, but Jordan4life's posts have been irritating. I'm guessing in person you aren't nearly as pessimistic.

  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 12:21 PM) Interesting since this is precisely what happened in the Iraq war. Resolutions were past, Saddam continued breaking them, and the UN failed to enforce anything until Bush decided enough was enough. We learned later that he had gotten rid of most of the WMD's we (and others) thought he had, but that's hindsight for you. [note: that's not an argument for/against the war, so lets not open that bag] As to your question Tex, my biggest problem is that we somehow feel justified in going half way across the world to intervene in a civil war in the name of saving innocent lives, spending billions in the process, yet we fail to respond in a similar fashion to our own internal wars here at home. Why not spend some of those resources going into the ghettos in just about every metro area and finally rid society of gangs, which are probably the cause of more murders than Ghadaffi? Great point.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 24, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) and how many small mom and pop stores are really going to be saved here? They're on equal footing with big box stores anyway (in terms of people having to pay sales tax) so it's not like a new stream of clientele is going to be coming through the door. If anything, this law screws the small mom and pop internet stores out there that may or may not have a presence in Illinois. Now their one perk for consumers is gone. One of us is misreading the law. Illinois tried to prove that Amazon had a presence in Illinois with their affiliates. No presence, no sales tax collected for sales in Illinois. The perk hasn't changed, any sales where the buyer and seller are in the same state the sales tax must collected and paid by the seller. Sales where the buyer and seller are in different states, the buyer is responsible to report the sale and send in the sales tax. (which does not happen).
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 07:30 PM) I would say that it is never okay to allow dictators to kill innocent people. But the reality is that we cant intervene in every situation for a variety of reasons. Right there is the crucial concept. Every country has harsh penalties for treason, yet every country has different definitions of treason. We accept protests and petitions as a right, many other countries do not. Most countries do not have the death penalty, yet imagine our shock and awe if France sent in jet fighters to keep the Governor of Texas from executing someone? We see them as innocent protesters, their government sees them as treasonous rebels.
  13. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 07:18 PM) How did we beat the Cubs by $2M? Assuming you are looking at the Operating Income, we made $4.2M more. But I don't believe that column because then it mean the Yankees only made $25M last year? And we made $27M? No way we made more money then them, and how did the Red Sox LOSE money last year? I'm not sure I understand this chart. When it comes to revenue sharing, the Yankees give, give, give. And they have a huge payroll. I could easily see teams earning more than the Yankees.
  14. Operating income = profit; well actually EBIT earning before interest and taxes. After getting a $30mil revenue sharing check, being in the race the whole season, and having the lowest payroll in baseball, the Padres were the #1 profit team in 2010. I'd have top see a 10 year average to really appreciate the numbers. Perhaps once a decade almost every team earns $20 mil or so and this was just an aberration.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 07:03 PM) Everyone ignores other humans' suffering. Do you spend your entire day mourning for every person suffering, somewhere? We're risking lives to arguably save lives. Some people have raised the moral issue of not helping the rebels. I'm starting to come around to the side that it is right to intervene, I'm just wondering when y'all believe it is ok to sit on your hands and watch a dictator kill his people.
  16. Thankfully they turned a profit last year. I would have been so pissed if they had spent any of that $27Mil on a DH. Imagine of the team would have won their division, only to find out they lost a million or two. How terrible would it be to be a Bo Sox or Mets fan and realize your team lost almost $2mil last year. http://chicago.sbnation.com/chicago-cubs/2...-white-sox-10th BTW, kicked the Cubs ass by $2mil

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) The Braves' 15 division titles since '91 vehemently disagree with this assertion. I'd say the Twins of the last decade don't agree much. Or how about the Red Sox? Or do Lester, Buchholz, Pedroia, Youk, Bard and Papelbon not qualify? Phillies won't agree, either. Yep, a couple teams have been successful. So every team should follow that same path? There are more than one way. But then you couldn't hate on the Sox as much.
  18. If we drop down to AAA AJ, Sale, Dunn, Buerhle (winaa), Quentin, Peavy, and maybe a coiuple others, we'd have the best farm system in baseball! f*** Yeah!
  19. At what point is it morally justified to ignore another human's suffering?
  20. QUOTE (YASNY @ Mar 6, 2011 -> 12:05 PM) As far as most "remarkable" moments in sports, I'll have the say the moment Jim McKay announced the murder of the 11 Isreali athletes at the '76 Munich games. Man, that whole time was memorable. Glued to the TV. Turned me against haters to this day, probably made me a liberal
  21. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 05:59 PM) That's fine with me. I'll be the new devil of the board. I'm NOT being mean or whatever, but I don't give a s*** what Humber has done this spring or what he's added. He's hippos***. If this were the Cubs, we'd all be laughing. But since it's the Sox there's some kinda fake hope that he can be good. That won't work on me. If I turn out to be wrong, so be it. But the odds that I'm wrong are pretty low. Like really low. If Webster's ever needs an illustration for pessimist, they should give you a call. Why do you even follow the team? I'm convinced you're a troll with nothing but Cubbie pinstripes everywhere.
  22. If Flowers is hitting .400 and AJ is hitting .123, all the pitchers hate him, he spits on Ozzie . . . We could keep creating scenarios until we hit an obvious one that AJ is canned. Instead, how about what would it take for the organization to sit AJ down? It will probably be something AJ does, not something Flowers is doing. The job is AJ's until he screws up. If the pitchers still have confidence in him, if he is hitting at a reasonable clip, I just don't see him getting benched no matter what Flowers is doing in AAA.

But he'd be worth Pujols + extension, straight up in a trade. Anything less and Kenny is an idiot
  24. Texsox replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
There are people that find flaws in everything enjoy your lives.Walk around noticing the worst in everything, thnk about how s***ty something can be. Go to a game and only have fun if your team wins. Go to a game and only have fun if your team wins easily. But even then, figure out what went wrong and how easily they could have lost. Farm systems haven't been relevant since 1970.
