  1. very close to a new career path.
  2. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 06:10 PM) See, this is so hard for old sh*ts like you and me Tex because we've been listening to music for like eighty years and that covers a lot of bands. Remember John Philip Sousa? He had a helluva band. The cool thing is thinking about the bands we loved that did not pass the test of time. For me I'm thinking of acts like Joe Jackson Look Sharp!. Boomtown Rats. Teenage Radiation, Leisure Suits. Otis Day. No doubt I would have had them in the top 20 at some point.
  3. QUOTE (striker62704 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) What Kenny acquired was a versatile LH bat. The guy can play like 5 positions. That means we can put Teahen at 2B and try and sign a RF. Or put Teahen in RF and try and sign a 2B. Teahen is no star but I bet he'll perform better with a change of scenery. Interesting that KW picked up another underachieving 1st rounder. As I was driving back from an appointment, I was thinking just that. As a first move, this is awesome. Kenny has more options today in what to go searching for. So based on who becomes available and at what price, anything is doable. What can't he use now to upgrade without losing too much? CF and C??
  4. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) The reality is if you don't really like the person or they aren't that great of a friend, there is nothing wrong without going. To be honest I've been super narrow on the invites to keep our guest count down. We are still expecting about 200 cause the family is massive, but there is nothing wrong with saying no or declining. And the showers are usually seperate from the wedding and I think if you do both, you should factor it in and basically spend what you would have on one gift and either just give the gift at the shower or just give them two smaller gifts. Me, I'd be fine going to city hall and getting married. The wifey and her family, not so much, haha. f*** family, invite the 200 wealthiest (and generous) people you know
  5. Monday evening could be pretty special for me.
  6. I also struggled with favorite today, or over my life. Prime example was The Who. Back in the 70s I was a huge stadium rock fan and The Who was, by far, my favorite band, no one else was close. I've mellowed so much they barely made the top 10, and if I measured favorite by what I listen to the most now, they would have ranked even lower. So all of that adds flavor to these lists and makes them a lot of fun. Also struggling with bands who changed dramatically over the years. Bands like Van Halen had major changes, but overall, was their music that different? Probably not. Bands like Fleetwood Mac are dramatically different from one line up to another. And some I wish I could put an asterisk next to the name and give eras or dates. Most of you whipper snappers probably do not realize that the pre-disco Bee Gees turned out some very good songs. And finally, I tossed out Simon and Garfunkel as not rock enough, but somehow left in Jackson Browne. I kind of wish I hadn't of done that.
  7. That is just so wrong on so many levels.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) Think about the other guy in this deal, Josh Fields. But did we trade these guys at their peak value?

Letting them know they are the number one choice is almost always a good thing. And now you are in a great position because they brought to the process a willingness to work within your time frame. If/When you do get a competing offer it is very easy to contact them and explain the situation.
  10. QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) You can always say no to the shower. Or request a gift made to a charity in lieu of a gift. I don't need insurance for gifts. I have a job and I buy the stuff I want. I guess they could say no. I just remember all the excitement when my ex and her friends started to plan a shower. The recipient just never mattered. Most of the time it was a surprise shower, so they never really had a choice. What I really hated was when they started asking the groom-to-be to show up as well. "Couples" showers are the worse.
  11. Zero room for hate. How about a dislike?
  12. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 06:41 AM) I believe if the church is not specifically endorsing or materially supporting a specific candidate or party then there are loopholes in how they are allowed to advocate. In this particular case, I don't see stuffing the bulletins as being much different than preaching from the pulpit since the message is consistent and fundamental to the tenets of the church; Catholics oppose abortion. I personally dislike churches bullying parishoners to tell them what to do, but they do it all the time, and here church moral teachings happen to dovetail with an opposition stance to a proposed bill. I obviously do not have a problem with groups discussing politics and offering opinions, whether it be the NRA, AARP, the local Tavern, or a Church.
  13. QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 10:30 AM) So, I've got a ton of weddings coming up. People who are in their upper twenties and lived on their own for the past 5-7 years. Or lived with their future spouse. And I know this will sound petty, but do people in that age range really need engagement parties, showers AND then gifts at the wedding? Seriously? How many sets of dishes do you need? How many linen table cloths? How many board games and vacuum bags? I understand the whole wedding shower thing from when people were moving straight from their parents into their own household, but now? When I have friends that buy a house, have a house warming party, then get engaged, have an engagement party, a shower, and then a wedding. Come on. That's just f***ing greedy. However, I don't mind baby showers. Sorry, rant over. I always called these middle class baby insurance. You pay in by attending everyone's, then collect when you have a wedding, baby, etc. Usually it's their closest friends that want to throw the shower(s). But yeah, if they are doing it, it's greedy. If it is their friends, then decide how close of a friend you are.
  14. And only hours into the off season, K-Dubya announces the Sox are around and making noise. The marketing people applaud!! This trade seems to be a win-win for both teams. I have some misgivings, can see how this could turn ugly, but overall, nice move.
  15. We always love an underdog
  16. Wow, I think I'll call him up and see if he'll donate to the Boy Scouts . . . I wonder if his lack of reproducing was a lack of a willing partner.
  17. useless to fight it, Yankees are an incredible franchise. Go AL!

Another thought, silver is both a color and a metal. There can be various amounts of silver in a silver coin. When talking to the paint manufacturer, know the metal being painted.

  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 08:37 AM) The rights of the parents be damned... The balance of all of our rights is an amazing thing. Like the old saying, your right to swing your fist ends at my nose. So we have a few hearings, a couple judges look at the rights of the 16 year old, and it passes the test. Trust the process.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 05:46 PM) I cannot tell you how much I hate this line of thinking. You don't have enough money, so why cut if it is going to be enough to plug the entire deficit. That is so counter to common sense, I don't know what else to say here. Its like thinking that you are unemployed, so you have to hurry up and spend all of your money, because you aren't going to have any soon anyway. Or if you are already in debt, cut your income.
  22. One luxury we have, being such a rich nation, is we can argue these things to the Nth degree, and usually a pretty damn good policy results. So have at it ACLU and the courts.
  23. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 03:00 PM) So what you're saying is that 15 year olds should be treated as adults for what they do to other people's bodies but treated like children for what they do to their own? Smoke screen here. Are you suggesting that because some 16 year olds are capable of murder, rape, etc they should be allowed adult responsibilities and rights? Treated like adults in a criminal setting merely establishes the best venue to protect society. Our juvenile court system was not established to handle a 15 year old who murders in cold blood. Just because we call it the adult system, and enforce adult penalties for vicious kids, means we should treat every child as an adult. Just because a 16 year old participates in the gang rape of a girl and is adjudicated in an adult courtroom, and receives and adult sentence, means every 16 year old should be able to enter into a contract, vote, or have medical procedures without notifying parents.
