QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 07:51 AM) I think anybody would want Boras representing them. From a fan perspective he's still really obnoxious though. And sometimes his strategy really does backfire. You would be surprised. I remember a thread a while back where most said they would not want Boras representing them.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 09:46 AM) Except that there is no monopoly. As was stated earlier in this thread, there are tons of other companies out there. I guess there are some people who are able to get jobs that easily and can move around to have that choice. I wonder how large that segment of the population is.

One change that could be interesting is to require companies that offer insurance to offer it from day 1. My current employer does that, which is really nice when changing jobs.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (vandy125 @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 07:27 AM) I think that this story may show a clear case of a young person taking a big risk (without realizing it). Having a gap in coverage is something that a lot of young people do, and this is a pretty big risk as this guy found out. If his family is able to afford a $1000 monthly rent apartment by the hospital in addition to what they had before, they could have found a way to afford health insurance for the year that he was not covered. This is also why I think everyone should be required to have some sort of health insurance. It will remove these types of situations and will help drive down costs because those healthy, invincible young people will also need coverage. He and plenty his age are taking a big gamble and some are losing. Actually, much of the apartment is being covered by fundraisers and donations that were done for the man.

So Boras got his client 50% more than the previous record. And some people would not want him representing them in negotiations. GMs love you guys.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 07:09 AM) Is it really freedom to be beholden to a private corporation instead of a government you at least have a vote in? I would say no.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car sold Chevy Impalas without standard side air bag
http://www.kansascity.com/842/story/1385463.html More at link. Basically when I rent a car, I expect it to have all the standard safety equipment. I am very surprised to learn that manufacturers allow fleet buyers to delete certain non federally required safety equipment.

Hire a mime. It won't get rid of the flies, but mimes are so damn funny when they pretend to be walking into the wind or stuck in a phone booth.

Michael Vick Talk
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) Tex, I am not sure I understand how you are reaching this point. Someone who kills someone accidentally in a car accident, if proven that it was merely an accident, would have far less of a stigma attached to them than someone who killed someone in an accident while intoxicated. Your reasoning implies that Stallworth is being given a pass because he was intoxicated at the time of the accident, while the exact opposite is the case. In general, our society cuts criminals slack if they are impaired when they committed the crime.

Note to all you youngsters...
I wore one behind the plate but not when I was playing the field. Usually when I wasn't starting at catcher, I never was brought in later. Except once, we had a small lead and the other team was running all over the place. Six stolen bases in one inning, so the coach calls time and motions for me to put on the gear. LOL, I ran into the dugout and had all the guys stand around me while I put on my cup. I took a foul tip that went under my mitt and bounced up and off the cup. That watered my eyes for ten minutes, no way I would have survived without a cup.

What is your general feeling about the White Sox?
Since almost everyone thinks the AL Central is a crap division, doesn't that mean there are 4-5 crap teams in the division? And I say 4-5 because one may be below crap.

Michael Vick Talk
QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 01:27 PM) Want to kill someone and stay out of prison long term? Get drunk and run them over. There's a lesson kids. And as long as people accept what people do while drunk as not their fault, or excuse them in some lesser way, we will continue to have these things happen. Perhaps, if the social stigma, punishment, and everything else was the same drunk or sober, people would think a bit more when drinking. But as it stands now, people will give someone a pass if they are drunk enough.

Michael Vick Talk
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 01:13 PM) Once again, I know this will be an unpopular statement, but I am going to say it anyways. Driving while intoxicated, as much as it is an unwise and unlawful decision, does not equate to purposeful acts of harm. They simply are not the same. Diminished capacity is an interesting justification for something. If I drink enough, anything I do will not be purposeful.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 09:17 PM) I own dogs but there is no way that what Vick did is worse than murdering a human. Agreed. And he received a very stiff sentence, served his time, and already is having an easier time of adjusting back in the world than most inmates. He found a job right away. I am not advocating dog fighting. But it seems a little hypocritical in a national that processes animals from conception to our plates like a manufacturing plant, we are a tad sensitive about some animals.
