5th Grader Suspended for Anti-Obama Shirt
Seems like dad wanted attention. I've been solidly in favor of school dress codes. I'd love to see a uniform system adopted in all school districts. And to be fair, the school needs to drop this wear r/w/b, spirit week crazy hat, stuff and all the variations. Either it is important what you wear, or it isn't.

$700 Billion Bailout
Thinking about this, I was wondering who would be best at holding this paper after the bailout and believe it is the government. Any money paid on these mortgages should be paid back for the bailout. The government has the best chance at collecting. While the people who defaulted are still in the home, I would be in favor of Withholding all income tax refunds A portion of any unemployment, Social Security, Disability, Public Aid etc. check be withheld (it would go towards housing anyway) Lottery or similar winnings (but what the hell are they playing the lottery for anyway) Wage garnishment Almost any other payment the government can find.

Nigerian Scammer
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 08:13 AM) That was pretty damn thorough. The best scams always are. There were a few things that had me wondering, plus if they could so nicely fake the tat on the girl's picture, they could easily fake the tat on the guy's picture. Some of the dialect and idioms sounded fake.

Banks
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 08:14 AM) They aren't wanting to give up the overnight lending rates they are making on sitting on your money. It's more than just lack of infrastructure. Thank you, that's about what I was suspecting, I just didn't know how they would profit.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 07:11 AM) You hit in on the head. In this case we at least own the assets and get something out of it. In his case, we are giving away homes. You think home prices are falling now, trying giving some houses away. And to be clear, this is like buying a horse and getting to keep the manure while someone else goes riding. I don't like the government in the mortgage business, but if we're writing the check, I want the asset. Worse case it winds up Sect 8 housing (do we still have that program?) Hell, give them to returning Vets to live in.

Banks
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 07:15 AM) Not on-line? This is the 21st century, in my eyes it would be an instant dealbreaker. I guess I should be clearer. They have on-line banking, and from what I've seen with the interface, it is nice. What I'm getting at is direct deposits and wire transfers are batch processed overnight. I've become accustomed to instant availability of those funds. They tell me this will require a substantial update to their infrastructure which will be completed in the Spring.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 06:03 AM) I'm sorry, but why should Joe Taxpayer pay for these peoples' houses? If they can't afford a home, you, me, and everyone else on Soxtalk shouldn't be forced to buy it for them, to the tune of $5,000 of debt for every single taxpayer. Interesting question. Just what is Joe Taxpayer paying for in this bailout? Seems like we're giving the money to the folks that made the bad loan, so they get a nice check and they get to keep the loan. America, what a country. I think Balta left out the conclusion, at the end the homeowners will owe the government. Have the government hold the paper.

Banks
QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 11:42 PM) I've banked with Compass since 1997. Been planning a change to a Credit Union lately, but have been procrastinating making the change. Nothing special about them. Just another bank. You mean they don't live up to their slogan "Just a Little Better" They bought the best area bank down here. I hope they don't screw it up. They took one major step backwards, their system is not on-line, so direct deposits take overnight to batch process.

Banks
Compass Bank a wholly-owned subsidiary of BBVA (NYSE: BBV) (MAD: BBVA) bought out the bank I was at for my checking and savings accounts. Normally I have little interest in banks, just allow me to speak to an intelligent human once in a while and I'll keep my money there. Now, I'm getting curious and wondering, anyone heard of these folks? I understand they are a huge regional bank here in the south. I never heard of them until they bougfht their way into the border market.

Five Best Things Congress Has Done In The Past 25 Years
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 20, 2008 -> 03:56 PM) I'm not sure I agree with that. I'd argue that it's more the people running the government than the nature of government itself (although the nature of this lobbyist, corrupted government might be the real key). Think about the 25 years before this 25 year block, 58-83. Within that time, you had major things get through the Congress. The Civil Rights legislation. Creation of Medicare and the other "Great Society" programs, along with all the drive and funding for the space race. The 25 year block before that you had FDR and his major shakeups, Social Security and the entire regulatory structure we've functioned under for 75 years now, along with the Defense acts of 1948 that structured the military as its found today, and a fairly major war in both blocks. You may not like those things, take your pick...but no one can deny that Civil Rights and Medicare are "Big things". The next set of "Big things" that people might want to get done in this country (a universal health care system, a crash program to get rid of fossil fuels) have been hung up by entrenched interests. Why they're so strong is the question. Is it the media? Has the power of lobbyists gone up that much? Is the American voter just dumber? Is it the party/people we have running things? I really don't know. Which is why I used 25 years as a time frame. I even considered going from the end of Vietnam to today. NAFTA?

50 FAVORITE WHITE SOX PLAYERS
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 04:54 PM) With all the hate Javy is getting the last few days about him not being a "Big Game Pitcher", it makes me think people forgot the problems Marte had. My favorites were more lasting than strictly performance based. If that was the case, we could just have had the greatest players to play for the Sox list.
