  1. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 05:53 PM) As I stated in the post above the play in its entirety is not nearly as offensive as you seem to be under the impression it is. It's not like we're talking about an episode of South Park here. It's not, but a respect their right to not stage the play. This was not a case where someone wanted to stage it and was told no. The same group that looked into it, decided against it.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 05:49 PM) Where's the picture of the sharks and barracudas eating? Best estimates are 1 in 333 live to reproduce, back on the same section of beach. I was thinking as a fundraiser they should have painted numbers on the back and taken bets. There was also concerns about the gulls that were circling.
  3. What does this say about the liberal media?

The northern Mexico coast and southern Texas is the nesting ground for several endangered species of Sea Turtles. Volunteers patrol the beaches looking for nesting females and retrieve the eggs and incubate them. Later they are released. This year they have found over 50 nests, double the previous year's best. What is also very cool is a leatherback nested foir the first time in 70 years just north of here. http://www.seaturtleinc.com/
  5. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 10:49 AM) whoa i think you're way off base this time. as an actor, the POINT of theatre is not just to entertain but to provoke discussion, create change, enlighten, etc. The point of theatre, just like any art, is to SAY something. Fluff musicals do serve a purpose, and that's what Broadway's mostly become these days, but why should governmentally funded projects be limited to this fluff? I'd argue it should be the other way around. The gov't should fund theatre that is educational and teaches us something or at least opens our minds up to looking at something in a different way. I do not believe that every park district that puts on a play needs to follow that same mission statement of enlightening, offending, creating change, etc. I believe there is room for non controversial, family entertainment, and that is what a park district should be involved in. GP rated events that the entire family can enjoy. Believe it or not, there are volumes of plays by Simon, Williams, Shepard, O'Neil, Miller, etc that could be staged. But I've come to accept that around here the consensus is that insulting, offending, is always preferred to something less controversial.
  6. No one was demanding they stage this musical. During the process, they decided it was not right for the venue. So they are being criticized here for being sensitive to people. It wasn't as if someone wanted to stage the play and were told no. The same group that originally thought they would, then decided not to. Are they any worse then groups that never even considered the play? It's a shame when being considerate to citizens feelings is the wrong thing to do. There are thousands of musicals they can show in place of this. Ones that the group performing are more comfortable with.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 2, 2008 -> 07:53 AM) Flaxxing the Dogg?
  8. Shall we also condemn every theater group in the country that has not produced this musical? I believe publicly funded projects like this should stick to entertainment not social education. I think it is reasonable for a family to be able to walk through the park without a government funded musical singing racial insults.
  9. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) Favorite euphemisms for masturbation? Or How Jim Spends His Saturday Afternoons . . .

  11. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 07:22 PM) Yup. Relatives who climb out windows with TV's and threaten neignbors. Nice family. Tex, if you walked out of a friend's house carrying a TV, and there was a man standing in front of you with a shotgun that said "stop or i'll shoot", I'll wager that you stop, and not run at him or away. Would you seriously want your kids playing around that guy's house? I guess it must have been some TV if it was worth killing someone over. Nice values. And stop or run? Interesting debate. Perhaps you would stop and try to reason with Chuckie or Freddie and their shot guns, but running seems like a plausable idea as well. He may be a concerned neighbor, or he may be one of Manson's followers. He may just want to talk to you, or he may want an easy shot.
  12. How sad it would have been if he was saying "I thought they were burglers, how was I to know they had relatives staying there?"
  13. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 07:06 PM) Or to possibly warn people that this is a period piece and contains some strong language? From the article it seems that it is in a park setting, outside, and anyone in the park would be able to hear. I am assuming this is similar to Ravinia.
  14. I'd take Freddy on the road, Javy at home and feel good about either. There have been a lot of pitchers come through Chicago and I'd rate both those guys pretty high for competitiveness.
  15. I think we should honor Bonds' statement and not elect him to the HoF.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) Dumb. And even if they think its a valid concern, fine... just change that one damn word. Generally when you buy the rights to produce works like this, you are not allowed to make a change like that. You have to perform it as written. Some even go so far as to dictate staging, lighting, etc. In this case it seems the venue is the issue. If you bought a ticket to the play, you presumably would be prepared for the language. Since there is a real possibility of someone accidentally, and without knowledge of the play, overhearing the language, it seems prudent to pick another play.
  17. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 1, 2008 -> 05:31 PM) I'm 100% against any lists having to do with music. So a Rap list would be cool . . . I kid because I care™* *Used by permission of FlaSoxxJim
  18. I like SS's idea American Rock Bands, great focus. Although the winner may be on only half or less of the lists. Sox players by position, turn in a list one person per position plus a lefty and righty, middle relief and closer, toss in a manager and owner We've never talked about what makes a fun list to do. I think that most of the top 5 should be on the majority of lists. Having 14/18 and 17/18 type means there is some legitimacy to the ranking. If the winner is on 5/18 and 40-15 are on one or two, not as much. Which is why, in this format, hot chick would not work as well as a single elimination tourny
  19. QUOTE (BobDylan @ Jun 28, 2008 -> 01:15 AM) It was never printed by news outlets that I'm aware of, but I can go digging through their message board to find the post if you'd like. (They're somewhat active posters there.) Let me see if I understand what happened. The OC just snagged one of KoC songs and used it without prior permission? Just out of nowhere? That seems illegal.
  20. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 02:28 PM) The mystery person who left it off was... me. Never have been a fan. I don't like a lot of shows that other people do. Friends, Cheers, Raymond, Arrested Dev, Entourage, Curb Your Enth... I haven't even watched the Simpsons for at least 10 years. I had shows on my list that hardly anyone mentioned. In Living Color Futurama NewsRadio Just Shoot Me WKRP I like all of them on your list. NewsRadio was one of about 15 for 5 spots at the bottom of my list. Too bad the show's run was cut short by Hartmann's murder. And Just Shoot me was on my list too. I am a big David Spade fan.
  21. QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) I should've voted for this to give my props to WKRP in Cincinnati. I love that show. "Travis, with God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly." Arthur Carlson That was a great show. It actually got better with time.
  22. QUOTE (AssHatSoxFan @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 12:31 PM) More surprising is 4 people did not have the simpsons I was one of them. I decided it would be more fun for me to rank my personal favorites, and I just never got into the show. If it was more of a universal what are the Top 20 comedies, I would have had them in second or third. I was surprised after I started to rank them that shows like Happy Days, Coach, 3rd Rock From the Sun, and a couple others did not make my Top 20. There are a lot more quality comedies then I thought. I was surprised that Frasier and M*A*S*H were not in the Top 10.
  23. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 10:19 AM) The Simpsons has run for 20+ years, and was #2. I did not have The Simpsons on my list, but believe it belongs in the top 3. I just never watched. I'm not certain if it was a time slot thing or what but I respect the run they had and their impact on our popular culture.
