  1. And nothing in politics is 100% good or bad. I believe the benefits outweigh the potantial disadvantages. Of course if you already dislike Obama, then that wiull frame opinions.

QUOTE (The Critic @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 10:37 AM) Math is hard. Hmm, maybe it isn't a math test. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 10:48 AM) 7 is 5 Tex. And you got the 15 correct as well. Have you heard this one before?
  3. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 10:13 AM) McCain doesn't have to, because he's been there, done that. That's exactly why Obama DOES have to, because he has to show everyone he can. I'll just leave it at that. Great point. What makes this a fairer race is we have Senator vs. Senator. Their experiences can be more readily compared. And again, in fairness, not compared subjectively, but objectively. In the past we've had Senator v. Governor or v. President and it is tough to find a common yardstick.
  4. And by many accounts, The October Surprise was Reagan and his group negotiating with the Iranians as he ran for office against Carter. If true, it was far more of a breach than giving speeches.
  5. Seeing a job candidate in a situation similar to which you would be hiring that person for is a good thing. Hell, the perfect situation would be that each candidate gets to be President for a week, then we decide. Since that would never happen, simulations, are as good as it gets. I like it and hope that McCain does the same thing.
  6. I've been using Google earth to track and right now the eye is 8 miles from camp. It's weird because I know this area so well, I'm picturing different homes and stuff and imagining what is happening. I wish I had installed a web camp at camp to monitor stuff. The rain has been steadily increasing here at my house.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 08:42 AM) Is this an actual brain teaser? I'm confused...haha Yes it is. Another hint or two 0 is 4, 8 is 5.

I think we would both agree that an overseas mission, especially to a country where we are not wanted, often has a bigger impact on the missionary then the population at large that is witnessed to. I do see a huge positive affect in that. And perhaps I am overgeneralizing. Your trip was much different then the typical trip I see down here. I see these youth groups who are more interested in picking up pirated movies in Mexico then witnessing or helping. For them, the mission is the penance they pay for their overseas vacation.

Kap, That is one of the best ways I've heard that phrased.

    I'll offer a couple hints 10 is 3 and 9 is 4
  13. So McCain has an opportunity to either write a piece with some new information or opinion and get it published, or recycle something and have it rejected. Which is better for his campaign? I believe getting rejected was far better. And this is one reason he will be the next President. He is a proven campaigner, has won many times, and knows when what looks like a defeat is a huge win. Nothing whips up Republicans quite like getting snubbed by the evil, leftist, media. He could have been published, his advisers, and McCain himself, understood how. They wanted to get rejected and they did. Brilliant. This is now a world where if an article either adds the ® or eliminates a (d), it proves how evil the media is and exonerates Republicans from anything and everything.
  14. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 05:51 AM) I don't consider the Drudge Report to be either liberal or conservative. Drudge is far more likely to link to articles with a conservative slant, and well, if you listened to his radio show, you would know why. I still believe it is a far more useful strategy for the Republicans to attack the messenger every time a negative article appears then having supporters in the media. Far easier to divert attention by screaming media bias. IMHO this is the greatest political strategy of all time, and on a huge scale. It is amazing.

    If 1 is 3 and 3 is 5 and 5 is 4 and 4 is cosmic. What is 7?
  16. I't seems that landfall will be about 8 miles south of the camp I run. I'm about 90 miles away and feeling pretty good. There are chances for tornadoes and lots of rain today. We're gathering the usual supplies, we will definitely not be singing "wine bottle's low . . ."* *tip of the lyric hat for the first person to pick up that reference.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 07:10 PM) Definitely, and there are plenty of people who can't think for themselves, and prefer to have someone do it for them. But there is also still a large segment of society who prefers clean reporting, and the ability to make judgements for themselves. I believe a certain amount of analysis is important. The world is not as easy to understand as it was 50 years ago. The problem becomes when those lines are blurred and people believe they understand the news by mimicking Rush, Colbert, etc.

PA, allow me to put this into a little perspective, because my thoughts are shaped by this area. Many groups use this as a point of entry to working in Mexico with the poor people. And I agree, there are many poor people in Mexico. But, while they stay here and wait to enter, this is one of the poorest regions in America. But IMHO not enough Churches will offer a mission trip to a poor US community. They want to sell "exotic" and "challenging" trips. IMHO, we fail in many ways when we are selling the trip location to the youth and not the mission. If you truly want to witness to poor, Spanish speaking people, you do not have to leave the US, they are here. But instead, we want to kick them out and then we will witness. The plane tickets to some of these locations will feed someone for months, possibly a year. And again, I have confidence in your sincerity of purpose and do not wish to show any disrespect. Just offering a log for the campfire.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 09:17 AM) Funny, every July or August, he suddenly becomes "conservative". Kind of like.... oh nevermind... I've been a McCain supporter for about 8 years now. Been pretty damn consistent for a couple years now on which candidates I wanted. Seriously, Republicans have cried liberal bias in the media for two decades now. Every time something negative is printed, the first words are liberal media bias. We all know there are successful Republican business owners who could buy media outlets. There obviously is a huge market waiting for biased conservative coverage like Rush. Yet somehow, that market is never filled. I believe Republicans understand it is far better to be able to duck behind media bias then to actually solve it. Nothing like having communists, homosexuals, feminazis, wacko environmentalist tree huggers, and the media as enemies.
  20. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 04:44 PM) Obama didn't really say anything new, but he did say things the Times agrees with, therefore they printed it. McCain didn't write what they wanted to hear, so they didn't print. Who cares though? It's a liberal paper and they can print whatever they want. But we can laugh at them when they claim to be unbiased news source. That certainly is simple enough. So why don't conservatives ever buy a newspaper and just print what they want?
  21. One strange sight, all the shrimpers, dozens and dozens, heading into port and a lone, large, bulk cargo ship heading out of port into the gulf. Crazy.
  22. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 04:34 PM) There's a joke in here somewhere... Seriously, stay safe, get the hell off that island if you can... and let us know how you're fairing. We took off, I just got home. I had a few friends pick up the boats and one small equipment trailer. We pulled everything down and stored it in our two storage containers. Lots of work. I had one small 19' sailboat that we had to dig a few dead men and we're hoping they hold. We also just added a special roof that fit between the two buildings. That sucker will be in the bay and we have not even paid for it yet They are predicting a 5-6' surge, which will push against the buildings. I am dead tired and going to bed. I was awake since 3:00 am checking the forecasts.
  23. The bias seems to be they didn't want to reprint the same thing McCain has already been saying and has been printed. Obama plowed some new ground and was printed. It seems like they made the same offer to McCain, plow some new ground and we'll run it, and he refused. I think McCain calculated the impact of both courses and went with the media bias angle, which plays so well to his base. How many time should a newspaper print the same statements from the same candidate?
  24. Strange feeling as I watched the computer models gradually tighten and form right over my coordinates. I knew around 3:30 am that I would have to close camp and evacuate everyone. As I was leaving, storm clouds and rain began. The Gulf was very strange, confused seas, times when the wurf would pull waaaay back, then come screaming in. We were considering surfing, but backoff. The tops were getting blown off and too tightly spaced for good surfing. Also strange is all the emergency equipment and media moving into the area.

QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 08:26 AM) I know you're dialoguing, so I'll bite. A) I understand your argument, but I never said I wasn't doing anything stateside: Church Plant starting Fall '08 B) Going overseas, especially a closed country like Cuba, allows us to do practical things as well as evanglistic things, i.e. I brought in 10 changes of clothes (socks, underwear, shirts, pants, shoes) in a huge suitcase and left them there, also we brought in literature (seminary books in spanish) and money. Anyway, I'm much more of a service oriented person anyway: in June I worked on a habitat house and last year I was in mississippi for a week building homes in the Katrina wake. good thoughts, Tex. I understand, and there is a certain synergistic effect of these types of mission trips. It fills both people with the Spirit. And I hope I was not downplaying the impact you have had. I just wonder at times how much good we could do state side if we held off overseas missions for one year.
