  1. QUOTE (Steff @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 04:56 PM) IMO, It's easy to teach them... it's reinforcing it that's the hard part. "Sex ed" isn't a one time "the birds and the bees" talk as I know a lot of parents who think it is. These days most teens grow up in 2 parent working households and a lot of parents just don't have time to keep track of what their kids are doing. And when you have kids learning about sex from eachother, tv, the internet, or the movies this is what happens. As for making girls watch an unedited (I do believe an edited version is shown in elective sex ed classes), undrugged birth.. that wont do anything. They are smart enough to know that all they have to do is ask for drugs. Besides, the birth is the easy part of the big picture. Forcing them to take care of a newborn for 48 hours with no help would be a better, IMO. And society does not help much, in fact when parents try to discourage their children from engaging in sex, they are called out of touch, old fashioned, relgious nuts, etc. Meanwhile, as Steff points out, the entertainment industry is promoting and encouraging that behavior.
  2. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 11:09 AM) I love how these clueless assholes consider radio play piracy and not advertising. Then why do they "advertise" songs for free and charge to advertise a car dealer? Would they give entertaining car ads lower rates then the boring, annoying ones? They are using the music to draw an audience to the advertising they can sell.
  3. I wasn't trying to excuse Imus, I guess what I should have said is as soon as an old white guy says, there is a difference in the races, he gets labeled a racist for noticing. Today we just do not talk about any differences, which IMHO means the pendulum has swung too far to the side.
  4. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 01:12 PM) I think M*A*S*H was wayyyyyy funnier than frasier, and I don't even consider the graduate a comedy at all... I completely dropped the ball on making a list, but The Wayans Bros. would have been in my top 10. If you look at most critics lists of the top 10 comedy films, The Graduate is almost always there. It really isn't a drama, horror, etc. I have M*A*S*H at the top of my list as well, up until a couple years ago it would have been #1.
  5. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 08:56 AM) Don't let the companies fool you, Tex. The music companies will get those royalties, the artists will get pennies. Even less, when their crap doesn't get forced on us because the stations will fill more airtime with DJ talk. The music industry as it is needs to die. I don't have the solution, but it isn't working right now. I agree about the companies getting more, but when are we going to figure out how to be fair to the artists? Should their stuff be free once it is recorded and the only way they can make money is by touring? That just doesn't seem fair to me either.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 07:26 AM) I thought most stations paid royalites already? I know we did when I was in college. That's what I was thinking when I read the article. It does seem fair to me. Jim's post makes a lot of sense until you start to think about people making millions off your work and you getting zero, that just doesn't make sense to me either. If the industry allows the free broadcast ~and~ the free downloading and sharing, how are the artist making a living?
  7. I probably should start a different thread, but it kind of fits here. Actually in today's environment any mention of race, becomes racist if said by an aging white man. We have swung the pendulum too far on one direction and have stifled any constructive dialog. IF Imus truly had wanted to point out that minorities are picked on more, he would still have been labeled a racist. We just do not seem to acknowledge that there are different races in this country and their American experience is different based on the color of their skin and the language they speak.
  8. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 09:25 AM) Scrubs is still running. The final season will be on ABC this fall I believe. I put both new and old and just went with what I enjoyed. As a kid growing up, Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore were great, so they got honorable nod. The Lucy Show got nod from me for just being a pioneer (and still rather damn funny). But trust me, some currently running shows most definitely got up there, and one within the last 5 years got #1 for me. I thought Scrubs was done with this last episode? There were more great comedies then I thought when I started the list. My top three were easy, after that it was a mix of about 30 more. Then I would remember shows and have to look over the list again. Coach is the one I wondered about. Being a sports web site, it seemed the #1 sports comedy, but finished around 21 or 22 on my list.
  9. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 09:10 AM) Fair point. I'm not saying Frasier wasn't a good show, I just didn't think it was super funny. My top 3 were all laugh out loud at least once each episode kind of funny. Another way would be the guilty pleasure kind of comedy (South Park, etc.) versus more (any word here sounds snobbish) shows like Frasier and perhaps Dennis Miller. I also realized in my addled mind I mixed together two shows. I voted for Mary Tyler Moore, but was mixing it with Dick Van Dyke. I probably would have added Dick and dropped my #20 pick. And yes, Jim, looking over my list, none are currently running. Although Scrubs is pretty fresh.
  10. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 08:48 AM) 37 Emmys can hardly buy you a cheeseburger from Burger King. Great analogy. Most comedies on TV are very analogous to fast food. I think Fraser and possibly shows like M*A*S*H are similar to movies like The Graduate. Not quit dramas, but not quite common denominator comedy either.
  11. Obviously this has hit the Scouting community hard with four Scouts killed. There was also a lot of great coverage of Scouts helping. I have a group from Ames here this week, ironic they are out surfing.
  12. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 06:42 AM) Frasier wasn't funny. That's probably why it's so low. 37 Emmys for Comedy Series just doesn't buy you any respect anymore.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 07:14 AM) Well yeah, the Dick Van Dyke show only showed up on two lists (mine was one of them). However, what can ya do? I would have swore it was on my list as well. Which would have made three.
  14. I'm kinda surprised Fraser was so low. I also see a trend for current, which always happens with these.
  15. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 08:17 AM) How can you say that? Crede's glove is better (despite his throws this year) and his bat is better, when healthy. But Fields is cheaper and we could use the money saved to plug some holes . . .
  16. Why is it pandering to some groups and not pandering to others? It seems if we do not agree with a population segment, we use the label "pandering", and if we agree, it's just good strategy. Perhaps he has to "pander" to the middle?
  17. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 08:05 AM) Luckily I didnt say anything that was too vulgar so it just made for an awkward moment, she got the paperwork she needed from me and walked away. My face turned extremely red so that was the dead give away that I was talking about her.I felt like a pervert because I was explaining her with such excitement. You should have asked her out. Shipps turns slowly and says "I was just getting to the part where she approaches the desk and I ask her out, so would you like to catch a movie as soon as they remove that 6" spike from your lower GI, the puss stops draining from your ear, and the infection clears up? It must suck trying to pick up girls at an ER.
  18. I was just thinking it must be tough to be the parents of a Major League player. Riding their ups and downs, listening to fans heap praise, then ranting a raving. The trades, injuries, and what not. And remembering the other kids, who they love just as much, but who aren't on sports center. I guess it is also tough on the brothers and sisters. Soi here's to you family members who never get a cheer!
  19. Texas has two Senators® and a President® who hails from the Lone Star State. Plus a VP who was a Texan until the Constitution and not allowing a Pres and VP from the same state crept up.
  20. 5 months before the election and I am already tired of the whole thing. Can I just vote now and get it over?
  21. When gas was $2.00 per gallon a 2% increase would be .04, that same percentage is now .08 and much more noticeable. But generally speaking, companies have a better opportunity to gouge when prices are falling and they can keep some of the falling price for themselves. When prices are rising, people gauge prices much more carefully and there is more pressure on the retailers to keep the increase as small as possible. Also the taxes that are percentage based increase with the wholesale price, adding to the increase.
  22. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 11:17 AM) Aww, cr@p. . . I left Odd Couple off my list. Well, I guess when you are in your golden years, that's bound to happen.
  23. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 10:41 AM) Don't forget me! Oh sure, campaigning for votes Cheers! And well, just shoot me if I enter spin city and start campaigning. I prefer to allow the voter's will and grace of God to guide the selections. I was thinking with all my friends here, we make kind of an odd couple, but it's all in the family. But being a family guy, and may I say, king of the hill, I believe we could welcome back our old friend from night court. Now enough of this non sense, I need to catch a taxi but first, I need to scrub with crystal soap.
