If Alpha's "flag art" story disgusted you...
Does anyone even still care about the abortion debate? The Pro-Life extremists have not killed a Doctor in years, no bombings, etc. No thousand cross displays marking each death. The pro-choice extremists haven't tried to convince us that third trimester, partial birth abortions are fine and the baby doesn't feel any pain. Actually a certain time it's a dead issue, no candidate is pandering for votes on the issue.

I don't get hung up on what they call it. What is interesting is many of the people that will get that pissed off, will not vote, have never mailed their congressman, will just parrot whatever some talking head says on TV. They will stick a dozen magnets on their car, but not mail $5 to one of the causes.

4/17 Gamethread: Sox (9-5) at Orioles (8-7); 6:05; CSN
For soem reason I'm just not that upset about this loss. Every team has nights like this. As Oz would say, go get drunk and forget it. Allowing it to fester and cling like s*** would be worse than a loss

CBS Power Rankings
So many ways to rank teams. I like wins and loses best. For most of the off season, most of the board, would have laughed at the moron that had us as high as 14. So that's pretty decent. IIRC we were going to lose every game against Detroit and Cleveland.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 05:38 PM) I like that. For you guys that used to pitch...did ya ever have a catcher that for some reason his glove never popped. Whether it was the glove or how he caught it. I threw fairly hard...and it used to piss me off when I knew I was throwing hard and the glove didn't pop. It's the style of mitt. I had one that was kind of dead sounding, no matter what was thrown. I never liked it, but I never had a pitcher complain. It seemed I would catch the ball higher in the webbing most of the time. I think I loved catching so much for the equipment, the jawing with the umpire and batter, and being able to see everyone.

Interesting issue at play here. Find an expert on a subject that does not have an opinion. By the time you have that much invested in learning and understanding, you have opinions, often strong ones.

This disgusts me
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) First, I don't think displays like the one I linked are meant to show national pride, and if they are, they are not meant to show it in a positive light. "Oh look at the knee-jerk conservatives genuflecting to a piece of cloth!" . I am very disgusted when it is abused in order to piss someone off. We've seen it before, it is nothing new. Then I have different levels of distaste for the others. People who display them at their homes and don't take care of them the right way started off with good intentions and just got lazy or something. That should be OK with liberals, though, since it is all about intention and feeling good. As for the businesses, I think to some extent, depending on the business, it IS a display of American Pride. I have flag decals on my front doors, which I have to change every few months when they start to peel. Yeah, some of the HUGE flags seem like overkill, like the one by Berlins House of Tools that you can see from I-80. Is it about what it shows or the emotion that the viewer feels? I saw people showing national pride when viewing that display. Did you see that display elicit any anti-American hatred? It reminds me in a small way of watching the towers come down. Stores sold out of American flags within hours of that happening. Seems to me that most people who saw it were puffing up their chests and talking about pride in the country. People were walking around it and thinking about the flag and how to properly show respect. Viewing art is about the emotions that one feels. This one sparked your pride in America. Would you have felt that same adrenalin rush of American pride if it was a beautiful pastoral scene with an American flag on a green, grassy, hill? So if liberals just want to feel good about their display of the flag, I guess conservatives really like this one.

Jimmy Carter = Hanoi Jane Fonda
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 03:17 PM) Ug. getting kinda like a 'who's on first' now. Getting confused! Must find lost brain cells! LOL Anyway, I really don't think "liking" them or "caring" are very big factors, as I posted, economics plays a huge role in all immigration issues and I also believe there is a concern that, much like happened with Israel, someone is going to lose land to a Palestinian homeland, and the areas with the most Palestinians would seem a natural choice. I think it is dangerous to use the immigration policies as a factor in the legitimacy or validity of a Palestinian state. No country wants to give up land, and that is what it will take. We would not do it for our best allies, so I do not expect anyone else to. So based on the economic angle, I suggested we compare the proposed Mexico wall. Economics is playing the biggest role.

That depends, there are some people around here with 5,000 posts and if 900 were worth reading, that would say a lot.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) I think that if there were a reasonable number of "Silly fluff" pieces in a campaign, but the media and the debates spent a reasonable amount of time actually working on issues, policy, things that might actually matter, then a.) I wouldn't be so annoyed about the silly fluff pieces when they do show up, but also b.) we wouldn't have a debate where 2/3 of the time is spent on silly fluff pieces. You've got 2 of the 3 people campaigning for the most powerful position in the free world on a stage in front of you, and you spend that time talking about flag lapel pins, whether or not Obama's pastor loves America as much as him, and whether or not they'll be on the same ticket for the 4th time. We could be at a stage where we know the differenes between these two, which is the matter at hand. I'm guessing there isn't much to do but wait and see the next two we will be trying to differentiate.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 11:51 AM) I think that, outside of a couple of messed up art students, everyone agrees on that. I'm really trying to understand what is artistic about this. NOT IN DEFENSE OF THIS IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM! I think non artists have a very narrow definition of art. We probably need a term that describes stuff like this. Perhaps "visual editorials" "Live Editorial Cartoons". I don't know. I do worry about the effects on her body. It is interesting how this does spark some dialogs and in a unique way. And if you are thinking of quoting and and debating that I said this is art, please reread the first line.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 10:10 AM) There are probably a few dozen issues out there though that haven't been covered more than in a cursory way. I can come up with about 5 right off the top of my head that either deal with recent events or could at least provoke thoughtful responses. 1. Global warming (thanks to the coal industry's sponsorship of about 1/2 of the debates this term, I think that there's been basically 1 question asked of any candidate by a professional reporter, and 1 other asked by a snowman. In probably 30 some debates between the 2 sides) 2. China. How do you respond to the crackdown on Tibetan monks, and how can the U.S. put pressure on China to improve its human rights while at the same time needing China to support its currency and support its negotiating position on North Korea? 3. Torture. Not the "Are you in favor of it" question, but "I=What can be done with the American government to prevent another administration from authorizing the use of torture as a national policy in the future"? 4. Hamas. Mr. Obama recently said that while he was willing to negotiate with other leaders, he was unwilling to do the same with Hamas. If that is the case, how do you expect the middle east peace process to be moved forwards? 5. What are your reactions to the current mess in the aviation industry, and what steps will your administration take to prevent them in the future? Conversely, how will these steps be paid for and who will foot the bill? Yes, a lot of questions have been covered in a lot of detail, like Iraq, etc. But if we're going to have this many debates, let's actually hit some creative policy minutia questions. It's not like in a 3 trillion dollar government running 2 poorly executed wars there's not more than a few of them. I guess that is what I was thinking of when I said let's hget off these topics and on to others. I understand ABC did not pull this off, but I even appreciate the "silly fluff" pieces.

This disgusts me
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 01:48 PM) I agree that more people need to take better and proper care of their flags. I have brought bad flag etiquette to the attention of several people around my previous residence. Most people looked puzzled. There are not many people with flags at my current place, but the few that are there seem to be in good shape and displayed correctly. So which disgusts you more. a flag display designed to provoke emotions of national pride, outrage, get people talking about the flag or a display designed to get you to pull in and buy gas there? BTW, I fly a huge flag, so I'm a better American then anyone with a smaller flag And I'm going to add flag smilies to every post to prove what a great American I am.

Jimmy Carter = Hanoi Jane Fonda
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 01:41 PM) eh, not really a good analogy IMO. i would say the circumstances are vastly different. and i'm not arguing this, as I do not feel it is relevant to the thread. So you agree the reason is the Arabs don't care about the Palistinians and do not like them?
