DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 02:51 PM) Winning Mississippi is not the same as winning Ohio, and shouldn't be portrayed as such. The whole Obama 11 state winning streak was stupid, because none of the states had any BIG delegate pull to them. The number of states each candidate has won, does not matter. All of the state sizes are not equal, and just giving total numbers of state wins is shortsighted. Hell just think back to the 2004 election when Bush used the same strategy to declare a mandate, and everyone freaked out. Oh how the times have changed... Using a sports analogy, isn't this like counting wins during the season? Of course there are big and small wins. But unlike say, college football, strength of schedule will not come into play. So I think there is some value in those comparisons. As far as Bush, I think the general is like the championship game. Sometimes the best team in the regular season doesn't win. Sometimes a bad call changes the results. And then we have the debates as to what the victory actually means. There can be valid and invalid inferences drawn from the same information. So I think it could be fair, in a primary, which occures in series, to make inferences that would not be valid if everyone voted at the same time. Still, great points, states won is not as big a factor as which states which will be a better predictor of success in November. But it really doesn't matter which Dem won Texas, they will lose in November and the opposite for California.

SOX CUT 12
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) With Haeger and Broadway out, I think that means there is a 99% chance that Masset is in the pen. He's the only pen arm left that can go a few innings. I'm a little surprised they want to just release Vasquez - he seemed to do well last year. I wonder if something came up in camp we haven't heard about, or if he's got some sort of mechanical issue. Or just doing right by him. Maybe he can catch on a 25 somewhere.

If Pot Was Legal . . .
QUOTE(Soxy @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 01:33 PM) Well, that certainly is your opinion. BTW, I agree pot is probably less harmful then alcohol, I just don't think the comparison is necessary.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:08 PM) Its not a big in depth thing. Player fails GM has to take action to cover failing player If Anderson could play CF like a major leaguer in 2006, we wouldn't be talking about Erstad, Owens, Quinten, Swisher, and the rest of them. Brian Anderson's failure as a major league CF forced Kenny Williams into action. If you can't understand the logic there, there isn't much point in continuing. And every GM in baseball knew the 8-ball K-Dubya was behind and would make it tougher for him to get fair for fair trades. If he keeps his head out of his ass, he could be truly great in this league.

Riiiiight...
QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:51 PM) Just make sure the car isn't made in Mexico then. You have to define what you mean by "made in". No one "makes" a car from the ground up anymore, They all are buying components from around the world. In Reynosa, Mexico, across the river from me, are companies that make seats, wiper blades, stereos, batteries, key chain remotes, various lift motors, wiper motors, wires, cables, and a few more I am forgetting. But no cars are "made in" Reynosa.

If Pot Was Legal . . .
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) You can't argue for legality because some is less bad than something else? I mean, if everything had to be good for you, cigarettes, cigars, TVs, and alcohol would be thrown right out the window and banned instantly, wouldn't they? Then you would have to accept an argument that alcohol is worse then pot so alcohol should also be banned. The comparisons are dangerous.

If Pot Was Legal . . .
QUOTE(Soxy @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:31 PM) Come on, look at the pharmacological effects of weed versus booze--no contest that pot is less harmful. None. Less harmful then say carrots? Less harmful then water? Unless you are going to argue that pot is beneficial, these comparisons are meaningless.

North v South
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:40 PM) I think the population in Texas and Florida is very mobile, and very different from the rest of the south (especially in Florida). But in places like Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, etc.......it's like a different world from the north. The north has been moving south for decades. http://www.usnews.com/usnews/images/blogs/barone_flow.htm For some recent numbers. The rust belt continues to decline and the sun belt continues to increase.
-
North v South
With a more mobile population there is very little difference between the people living in the north and south. I can tell immediately if someone was raised in the north or south. The southern raised person will have more formal manners. They will address elders with a Mr. or Mrs. and say yes sir or yes man, hold doors and push in chairs.

Gov. Spitzer (NY - Dem) netted in prostitution ring
QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) Sheldon Silver, the Assembly Speaker of NY, was just giving a speech lauding Spitszer's accomplishments while he was governor. One of the things he mentioned? An ethics reform bill. Not surprising. I was watching a report on these sorts of scandals and according to the experts the individual usually hates that part of themselves and goes overboard trying to kill it. Kind of like making some cosmic amends.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 11:01 AM) He resigned with his loving wife by his side. I think the man should have stood there himself and not put his poor wife through any more humiliation. Even if it was totally her choice to be there, he should not have let her. And the same goes for any one who has used their wife as crutch when facing a scandal ... from either party.- Rove taunted at University of Iowa
