  1. Can you really see the Hancock or Sears Tower from the UD now? I read that you can but I've not been up there to check it out. Are they talking about the very top row where the translucent wall is?
  2. I was thinking about Bush's conference & recent stats I've read about America in general & came to the conclusion that we are fooling ourselves into a false sense of security by referring to terrorists in a different mindset than we do other organized crime orgs. Here are some surprising stats: There are an estimated 100K persons involved in gangs in Chicago alone. This figure came out of a report that was focused on gangs from NYC & LA expanding into Chicago recently. On average 13000 persons in America a year are killed as a result of organized crime activities. Despite billions spent on the War on drugs since the Reagan years, illicit drug use & gang recruitment & activity has not declined. Now those are pretty eye-opening statisitics when you consider that terrorists are considered to be better train & better organized then illegal drug distributors (organized crime). How does organized crime keep from growing large enough to be a concern in America? Competition. Since these organizations are rooted in capitalistic pursuits they seek to work within the system rather than against it. This keeps them below the radar so to speak. The size of any one organization is limited by the fierce competition of another. For all these reasons organized crime pretty much polices & limits itself. Now if we think of terrorists in this manner it changes the perspective of who we are fighting in this war. We are not fighting a military power but rather a close-bound collection of militias trained to use every means necc to enact criminal violence on their enemy. How do you defeat militias? If a country were to occupy America by some means there would be an estimated 25 million in militias to reak havoc on their forces. This is best on estimates of non govt sanctioned militias training & operating in America today. So even if you were able to defeat the US military you would have your hands full to actually occupy it. What has happened in Iraq recently is that the Shiite & Sunni militia's have become organized by leaders loyal to Saddam. No one can put a true estimate on these numbers but considering Iraq's been on a war footing for the better of 30 yrs their numbers are probably on the order of 10's of 1000's if not millions. Now this poll is really asking the question how can you win a war in which the very people you are fighting are also the people you are liberating? You can't unless you are willing to pay a high price in lives & money to win the mental war of changing their ideology. Thinking along the lines of competition for the militias in Iraq one only has to turn to the Kurds. Hundred's of 1000's of Kurds were martyred by Saddam, the Suuni's, & Shiites. Since they have been fighting against these groups for years if we were to leave w/out question they would go after their oppressors. How is that a bad thing for the US? The World think's we should leave, the Dems think we should leave, & the American people are strongly suggesting they want us to leave. So if we leave, how could any one blame deaths at the hands of other Iraqi's on us? From a safety standpoint for the US would a Kurdish controlled Iraq be more or less safe? Perhaps instead of seeking to change the world we should concentrate on our own self-interests first.
  3. Not necc. It's all about implementation. Clearly a national ID system would be broken into classes: citizens & non-ciitzens. Legislation enacting a national ID system can be restricted to insure that data surround citizens can only be accessed by a majority of a grand jury opinion of no less than 9. As for non-citizens being able to track them is the whole idea. Initially I too was against this because what was being discussed was not practical in terms of securing privacy rights. But now there are implementations that can safeguard that. A national id card does not have to be associated with genetic information. It can be implemented by simply a photo & a PIN similar to secure ids. When seeking to use the card the encrypition key would be PIN+secure id that would be generated from a government based network. This makes forging the id card extremely difficult since the card essentially becomes a terminal on this network. On top of this a password can be required that expires annually & can only be changed when filing taxes. All citizens whether they pay taxes or not would be required to file a form to change their passwords. What essentially this system does is changes the idea of an ID being a static thing to something of a dynamic thing associated with a citizen's or non-citizen's life. This solves a lot of INS problems because non-citizens would have expirations tied to their visa's. Once the cards expired they would be very hard pressed to function in the US w/out being detected. This removes all the horror stigma behind retina scans, fingerprints, or pin pricks for DNA matching. Sure it slows down processing some, but a minor slowdown would be beneficial to our lives. Now for those who think it's giving away our privacy I disagree. I read an article recently & confirmed what I read with people living in London. You can't go anywhere in that city without being videotaped at least 100 times in the day. It's that intrusive. Like something out of Minority Report. I'd much rather prefer a national ID system to a National Eye system.
  4. As long as I get bullet proof clothing, my choice of guns & my own armored vehicle then sure I would go. Of course I want to test it all before I leave

  6. I think you give him too much credit. I don't think he lied about anything. I think he is the kind of person who pretty much hates to read & therefore relies extensively on the advice from others. He trusts Chenney emphatically & no doubt Chenney is what led him to believe Saddam had WMD's. Look it's very possible he did & they are still there. Iraq is a HUGE country & Bush's ultimatums gave Saddam plenty of time to move them. I don't think Saddam had any nuclear ones but we know for a fact that he used BIO WMD's against rebel Kurds in the 90's. So we know he had them at one time & there was no measure to force him to give them up. And once again Libya did have WMD's of both a BIO & nuclear flavor & did come forth as a direct result of our actions in Iraq. Some times misdirection can acheive better results as long as you keep the pressure on.
  7. Again it won't stop home grown terrorists. You simply can't do that & insure both privacy & civil liberties for the majority of Americans. The only way to stop home grown terrorists is to essentially give the FBI KGB like powers & I refuse to do that. That price for safety & security is simply too high a cost. But it would severely hamper the efforts of terrorists that enter this country carrying visas. What I am about to tell you is no lie. When I was in school we laughed about it. I never imagined they might attack the USA but now it's pretty weird thinking about. When I went to school at a prominent engineering school I had classmates from the middle east that proclaimed they were terrorists & going to school in the US to learn how to more effectively wage war against Israel. I would say there were about 1/2 a dozen I knew in my classes. I don't know whatever happened to them but I do know they were pretty serious in their convictions. Now I believe they never should have been admitted into the school without a thorough background check on themselves & their families abroad. The arguments against an offensive strategy are too weak & too idealic. There is no diplomatic solution with terrorists. That seek to kill you for what you believe in. I've given you the latest example of this & I can find 1000's more. You either cave in to their demands or they will sacrifice their lives to harm you. I read recent articles particularly from Saudia Arabia that Mc World is invading their turf & they are not happy about it. Their are protests in the street against shows like "Big Brother" reaching homes via satellite (You just have to love News Corp's Sky TV). Likewise Mc Donalds is an ever influential presence in the region. In other words as long as you are going to support the spread of capitalism in their regions the hate they feel for you will intensify. We are a world unified in the global economy so nothing is going to deter the spread of Mc World. Because of this we must be realistic in our efforts to fight terrorism. The rest of this debate as I see it is how to effectively bring about a national id system that would be very difficult for a terrorist to forge but at the same time insure rights of privacy & civil liberties for citizens. The goal should be to make it nearly impossible for a terrorist to commit a crime in the US w/out some help coming from the citizenry. If they get that kind of help, then that is the price we must pay for our Republic. We don't want the inception of thought police coming about & I'm afraid that's the direction wide sweeping Patriot Act's are leaning in.
  8. I'm sick of Ridge, Ashcroft & all the other paranoid power seekers in both parties who desire nothing more than to take away our civil liberties. They say it's required to protect me but I think they're both incompetent & full of s***. I do not want the Patriot Act renewed. I do not want the fed stepping on my civil liberties any more. I do not want the Miranda rights to be a blanket for law enforcement to use force & coercion in getting confessions. What I want is a reasonable policy that accepts the premise that you can effectively protect against terrorism by foreigners but it is next to impossible to protect against terrorism by citizens. There was nothing in McVeigh's record other than some missed tax filings that would have painted him as a terrorist before the bombing in OK. He had a service record, a college record, & family record of a solid American. It's pointless to enact legislation to stop the McVeigh's in the world. All of the other terrorism attacts from Atlanta to 9/11 could have been prevented by profiling foreigners. What it means is establishing checkpoints, license requirements, & background checks for those entering the country on vias. Transportation: A valid id should be required to board, rent, school, or license any vehicle in America. Those who are not American citizens should be subject to background checks. Most terrorists arrested in America have been found to have violated the terms of their visas. Background checks would pick this up quickly. A valid id should be required to rent, own, or train in any weapon in America. Those who are not American citizens should be subject to background checks. This applies to guns, tools, knives, or anything else deemed a weapon. Non citizens should be subject to more stringest departure & arrival checks at all ports (air, bus & sea). Locator bracelets should be required for any non citizens or citizens with estranged reseidency from regions know to be support or harbor citizens. This includes Saudi Arabia. Technology exists to confine them to city regions & visas could be redefined to limit travel within the USA. It's not difficult to do really. CDMA technology can be used to both insure periodic updates, check visa boundary range, & track location of high risk persons. If the bracelet fails to transmit authorities will know & be able to track the last known location. This coupled with the other restrictions on travel would make it difficult for a terrorist to get away without help from citizens. A valid id should be required to rent, purchase, or inquire on any communications related equipment. This includes cell phones, R/C, short wave, long wave, etc. Again non citizens are subject to background checks & high risks subject to inquiry. A valid id should be required to obtain any chemically related goods or services. Again the same stipulations supply. In other words, any good or service that could be deemed useful to terrorists should require a vaild id. Non citizens should be subject to background checks & high risk visas should be subjected to inquiry & locator devices. This is a lot better use of the ever growing budget for the Dept of homeland security. It's pretty simple. They can't plant a bomb on a train track without first getting access to the bomb & the train track. Which makes more sense spending a billion dollars to check the tracks or put preventive measures in place to stop the terrorists from getting to the tracks? We need to move in the direction of curtailing the civil liberties of non-citizens in order to insure such liberties for citizens. It's time.
  9. In the 90's some bad physics equations averted what would have been a death toll in the 10's of 1000's not to mention property damage. With no warning at all bombs exploded in the basement of one WTC. The intent was to cause one tower to fall into the other & thereby topple the 2nd. Estimated death toll was huge. But the terrorists got the math wrong, parked the vans in the wrong spots & the damage was minimized. Of course we all know how successful Mc Veigh was in OK, & Bin Laden was in NYC. But neither of these guys have even begun to exploit what is offered by technology today. It scares the s*** out of me when I think about it. If you knows someone's address you can find out their GPS positioning & program a mini-missile for seek & destroy? Science-fiction? No. Take a visit to your local hobby store & you will see how much technology has changed in the RC air-borne world. Do you think Robot Wars is cool? Just imagine programming coordinates into an RC min helicopter & watch it fly with GPS tracking from pt A to pt B without you having to do a thing! Now consider how easy it would be to rig such a device with an explosive (either plastic or home grown) & detonate by the vibration of a beeper. This is not science-fiction any more. These are things you can build at home. If you can do this on a budget of say $500.00 what do you think a smart tech savy terrorist can do on a budget 1000 times that size? It doesn't matter any more who's elected there is no one who can safeguard the country from all attacks. We've heard the stories of servicemen themselves being terrorists. They can infiltrate any where. Since there group association is rooted in religion they can recruit any where. I'm sure you've heard the stories about the Moonies over the years. Well I'm sure Bin Ladens got some expert psychos in the field of cult-washing as well. That's why when you add it all up the best strategy is an offensive one. There is no better way to disrupt their plans then to make it uncomfortable for them. Keep them moving. On top of that as much as it distates most Americans profiling is the best way to secure civil liberties for the majority of Americans & target suspicious individuals. Taking a page out of the KGB if America had simply instituted a policy of profiling all individuals with Saudi passports 9/11 would have been prevented. The common denominator in most terrorist attacks in the G7 nations by militant Muslims is that the MAJORITY in the group have Saudi passports. For profiling to be effective it must not be publicly known. This is why the KGB was so effective for so many years in maintaining order & control in the USSR. Essentially America would have to pass legislation allowing the NSA to work with the CIA & FBI to profile foreigners. Period. No specifics beyond that. Yes it does place a LOT of power in their hands, but we are combating very powerful forces. Without question if this profiling directive was in place prior to 9/11 that particular attack would never have occured. The pilots would have been under surveilance as soon as they entered the country. Eventually it would be discovered that they signed up for flying lessons & at that time it would have been discovered that they had been in the country past their visa limitations. What the investigation proofs is that some diligent people in the FBI & CIA picked up on these guys in Florida & elsewhere. But their hands were tied both legally & adminstratively to act. A legislative profiling directive would have changed that. As I see access to the USA for tourists from suspect nations should be severely restricted. For each privledge they seek beyond the restrictions they should be required to undergoe a background check. The Patriot Act is just an overbearing mandate on the American people as an over-reaction of a dumbfounded legislature. The attack on 9/11 was committed by foreigners & not American citizens. Until proven otherwise it should be them & not us who face the hardships as a result of the attack. You probably can not stop a McVeigh in the future. Once a citizen chooses to break the law it becomes very difficult to prevent him from reaking havoc. They've created a reasonable background while living here so it's nearly impossible to weed them out before hand. But foreigners are a different matter altogether. If they want to take flying lessons, truck lessons, or anything else the government should know about it & check them out first. No exceptions. If that ever passes then I'll feel a LOT more safer than I do today.
  10. The SOX should be 5-1. Vazquez was the only real challenge this team faced in it's first road trip. Two of the losses fall DIRECTLY on 2 players shoulders. One of them defies the odds. No one expects Marte to blow a 3 run lead by giving up 5 runs in the 9th. But then again, Ozzie had no business doubting Koch after the strike out. But the other is like a try out & that's what pisses me off. For years this team goes into EVERY season virtually throwing away wins with the 5th starting position. For about 5 MIL more the SOX can by a reasonable F A every year for this spot in the rotation. That's worth about 5-7 wins & if you look at the standings the past couple of years that's worth a division crown. Danny Wright looked horrible. Bouncing balls 5 ft in front of the plate & throwing wild pitches beyond Olivo's range. Lack of control is an understatement.
  11. It's just an average used in comparison to other countries averages. In no way should you take this to mean that most Americans earn that much per year. Visit the site for the office of budget & accounting for better distribution numbers. I think the Bell curve is around 21-23000 last I look. Sideshow I'm glad you weighed in. The reason why neo-conservatives support it in Iraq but protest against it in America is because of the distribution of $ in education in America. We can assume that administrators are practically non-existent in Iraq so most of the $ spent is going toward books, schools, & educating Iraqi's. But in America or if you prefer IL the average pay for administrators last year was between 80-90K. The average pay for teachers was between 50-60K. This includes suburbs. The peak compensation for a principal was 1.3MIL. The average per principal was 230K. When did competing for principals become like competing for CEO's? This is just outright wrong & that's why some states are now seeking to dissolve their school boards entirely . Philadelphia was the first by privatizing their school system. They cut the cost in 1/2 & so far post higher test scores than before privatization. There is no question that taking control of the education of a predominantly Muslim country where militants have been in power for decades will improve the safety of the region. It won't happen overnight as all revolutions are followed with turmoil but if our commitment is there then it will happen. That bill has no chance of winning but I too am appauled by the introduction of it. It's almost as if some in Congress are saying soldiers cost less than technology so do it. It would be better to regulate defense contractors to where they are forced to work harder for less than to do this. The future is an unmaned air force, so this should be the direction of other armed forces as well. No one is advocating that Bush is a good choice. In America voting always has been & always will be choosing the lesser of 2 evils. If someone really believes America will be safer under Kerry than Bush than let's debate why. Otherwise the choice is obvious. I often think it doesn't matter any more who gets elected because special interest groups weild the greatest power. It's getting harder all the time to exercise one's right to vote.
  12. Quote: I find your response to filled with straw arguments that are inconsistent with the reality of what others have argued and what others believe, as well as not aligned with the reality of the subjects you discuss. This is very typical of your side. When you have no factual basis to debate your argument resort to useless, general, & utterly hollow responses. I'm surprised you take yourself serious. Quote: Sorry that people disagreeing with you is upsetting. Dude, I love it when people disagree. It gives me a chance to BURY them with facts & statistics! It doesn't matter what the subject. I do think it upsets you though. Quote: The comment about go read history - well, you might try it. It as an amazing thing, the historical record. It sure is. Especially when you read from MORE THAN ONE SOURCE! ================================================= To reply to a hollow response with yet another hollow response is just not part of my character. Here are some more facts for you to digest: The media has not really demonstrated to the American people why militant Muslims hate them. A story in the NY Times covered a modern day martyr in Russia. Seven years ago in Checzna(sp?) a 19 yr old Russian soldier was captured by militant Muslims as a POW. They gave him an ultimatum: either renounce your faith & remove the cross about your neck or die. He refused & they beheaded him. It really is that cut & dry & it doesn't matter whether you are Russian, American, or French. They hate you & seek your death simply because of what you believe in. Now I'm not suggesting ALL of them do, but certainly enough to cause harm to Christians & Jews alike. This story exemplifies as well the rebirth of Catholicism in Russia. This boy was an Orthodox Catholic which is more strict than the Church of Rome. In St. Petersburg they now honor him annually & consider him a modern day saint. The main Church has yet to cannonize him as one. ================================================= Another reason why we should plan to turn over Iraq to the Kurds: Because the Sunni & Shiites are causing all the F'g trouble! We are reluctant to create seek & destroy missions because we are trying to befriend all groups in Iraq. When we depart the Kurds will be more than happy to do this for us.

  16. Ozzie promised E-LO the home opener. So it's all Wright on Sun.
  17. Actually I like Koch's style. Make those stats look worse in games like this to lower his cost as a free agent. As long as he saves the 1 run games it's all good!
  18. I think we might see Marte still Dang it all Willie! (Patton ref)
  19. BOCHY ball strikes again! This guy just isn't happy unless he let's a guy on. C'mon BILLY! WAKE UP!
  20. Damn! There making this look EAAAASYYYYYYYY! There could be some NY All Stars looking for new homes after this year
  21. SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEED KILLS! Ain't it a BIETCH All Stars from NY? 7-2 SOX! It's getting to be Marte time again! Get him some work.
  22. Yankee fans are SO MAD right now they're on their cell phones yelling at Steinbrenner to trade for Maggs 3 outs & the split's assured! ESPN has Wright vs Mussina on Sun It was fun while it lasted
  23. Ok let's see a show of hands for who thought we would split or win the Yankees home opener series?
  24. 3 MIL+ season tickets sold already! How do we compete with that? Way to go Carlos! Squash dem Yankees!
