  1. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 11:58 AM) The NBAs constitution says you can take the franchise from him if there is a 3/4ths vote by the owners. How NBA could deliver knockout blow to Clippers owner Donald Sterling Until the team is sold. Who do you think is going to get that money?
  2. Sweet, I like being wrong in instances like that. Further proof to not pay attention to the standings until Memorial Day.
  3. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) If I'm Silver, I dont want Sterling to be able to sell the team. He'll make 100s of millions of dollars by selling it. Leave him with nothing. The guy is a scumbag POS, but you can't take his property from him (which sounds awful in context, but I am obviously talking about the Clippers franchise).
  4. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) We have second dibs here correct? No. Currently 11th, but whatever the standings were the day he was placed on waivers.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 10:17 AM) Any predictions on Silvers action today? I think "indefinite suspension while investigation is done" Required to be naked at games, required to sit handcuffed to a chair at the main entrance, require Clippers to host "Maple Syrup Night" when the Grizzlies are in town, require Grizzlies to have a trio of real live bears as mascots.
  6. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) Sox 5-3 since the ace went down. CSINAA
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:44 PM) Cashman would be fired. No
  8. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:30 PM) Yeah, because we wouldn't be hypocrites. Red Sox fans yelling at the Yankees fans for cheating is hypocritical. Any fan yelling at any other fan for cheating is hypocritical. It was trendy and on topic. It fit.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:30 AM) What are you talking about? That quote doesn't settle the bet. I said we could contend (win the division, OK) if we had Reed. That would bolster the bullpen and we could win the mediocre to lousy to pathetic division. What are you guys talking about?? Eat your words. "It shouldn't be. Not in this pathetic division. It was winnable with Reed IMO." You know damn well what you said and what you meant, and trying to Johnny Cochrane it right now is flat out wrong.
  10. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) Ryan Howard got 15, 19 in what would have been years 2 and 3 of arbitration. Only one that comes to mind. If Abreu opts out I would certainly think the Sox would try to avoid arb and sign him to a nice extension. The thing that really sucks about Abreu is that when he's arbitration eligible, he'll be 30 and very possible be in the process of trending downwards already.
  11. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) @RapSheet With his new deal, Earl Thomas is the game’s first $10M per year safety & highest-paid DB on a multi-year deal. Contract up when he’s 29. Jairus Byrd was only the highest paid safety in the league for a month and a half. Suck it.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 04:45 PM) Any players gotten bigger numbers than that outside of arbitration, pre-free agency? Trout is scheduled to make $15.25 million in year 4, though he likely would have qualified as a Super 2 player, and he "only" makes $5.25 mill next year.
  13. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 04:46 PM) https://twitter.com/JKeppinger/status/460895465379086336 Oh, really? Probably starts a rehab assignment at that point. Then they figure out whatever it is they want to do with him.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 04:33 PM) It would be interesting to find comps for him in relation to his pre-free agent status, especially his 4th year. It might not be worth it at that point, but I guess we will see. Ryan Howard is probably the best comparison at this second, but we've only seen (less than) a month of Abreu, so who knows exactly how he ends up as a hitter overall.
  15. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) Still not what he said, but the fact that it's even close enough to be implied is so disheartening to see. Damnit Greg, I was trying to stick up the poor guy. First he gets egg on his face when Quin finds a quote, and now you trying to take his money and rob him blind. Guy just can't catch a break.
  16. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) Based on the way baseball operates, I'm sure you are correct. But it seems dumb. You'd think the league would want to protect it's organizations by having all players take physicals. Like the NFL and NBA do. The MLBPA is also a lot stronger than both of those two. Nothing that will improve value can be found, but all sorts of bad can happen. Plus, because players can be drafted and then choose not to sign, it can be damaging to the person. If a team gives a high schooler a physical and it turns out that he has a torn labrum, why would Long Beach State (or whoever) leave their scholarship on the table? Same goes for a college junior or draft eligible sophomore too. I'm reminded of the Barret Loux situation where he was drafted 6th overall and then that exact situation came up, and the DBacks no longer wanted to sign him to his allocated value.
  17. I think the only way they will be buyers in the traditional sense is if it's with 2015 in mind. Perhaps a guy is available that they can trade for and keep away from someone in the Central. But yeah, any other moves I think would be akin to Youkilis and Liriano from 2012.
  18. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:28 AM) We signed him to hit, not to be a good baserunner. His batting war should be somewhat weighted because that's what he's here to do. WAR is weighted to value a player's entire contributions on the field. If you bring in a guy to primarily steal bases and he does that very well but doesn't play good defense or hit very well, then you will see that he's a good base runner but not a good all around player. Jose Abreu is a good player, but his WAR properly depicts his value compared to the rest of the players in the majors. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:35 AM) Doesn't matter what we signed him to do, base running and defense are still part of the game. You rock. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:57 AM) Agree with all but the bold. -1.9 defensive value on Fangraphs is obviously including the positional adjustment. UZR is at 0.1. Based on what I've seen I think his range is solid, he's just made some silly errors. Could be better than average at the position with some work, and has already shown some progression since the start of the year. You're right, poor was a poor choice (hehe). He hasn't been good, but not bad either, and most 1B do grade poorly overall largely because they are typically large and slower bodied players.
  19. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) That should tell you that WAR isn't the most reliable stat. No, it tells me that he plays 1B. He's tied for 27th at 0.9 WAR. He's been phenomenal offensively, but his defense has been poor, he's a mediocre base runner (in other words, he's slow), he's hitting .260, and his OBP is .330. WAR is an incredibly reliable statistic and he's still currently on pace for a 5.5-6 WAR season, which is very, very good.
  20. Bought tickets to see Sir Paul in July. Not cheap, but that could easily be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 10:16 AM) Please don't patronize me. You were happy the Sox bought corn in somebody's stool when they signed Paulino. It isn't pointless. I just want to know why the 2nd round pick was considered so valuable before, but now it's "the Sox will be lucky if higher picks work out, but it's not just them it is everyone". I'm not trolling, just wanting to know why people changed their minds. I have no problem with my belief and thoughts regarding Paulino. I was wrong, or at least have been thus far. I've never shied away from that. You are ALWAYS lucky if a draft pick works out the way it should. No one has EVER denied that. It doesn't mean that it doesn't have value and is something that should be held in high regard by a team in the Sox position.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) The position the Sox are in is they need pitching. It was the point that was made then and the point being made now. They will always need pitching. If you are going to sign a free agent that requires compensation, and compensation freaks people out, wouldn't it be better when it's about as low as can be rather than waiting until it is about as high as can be? If you are planting corn, do you buy cooked and frozen corn or do you buy seeds? You buy seeds. If some of those seeds don't germinate, you get rid of them. I'm not going to patronize you anymore. You're trolling, bringing up old arguments that got threads locked which have long been buried and are moot and/or pointless anyways. If you forget about it, I'm sure the greater majority will too.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 09:42 AM) Good one. Nice selfie. But it pretty much was the argument. Rebuilding teams don't need capable pitchers, they need draft picks which apparently aren't expected to pan out. Just f***ing drop it dude. The Braves signed Santana, the Orioles signed Jimenez.
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) So we should expect supplemental draft picks to fail. We should expect #3 draft picks to fail since less than half of the #2 picks had solid careers, but in no circumstance should the White Sox have signed a player this offseason which would have caused them to surrender their second round pick. That pick is way too valuable. It doesn't add up. I have never heard this argument. Will you please explain it in full and bring up any threads that have discussed this as a possibility?
  25. QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 06:46 AM) with all due respect, I don't buy it. let's called it what it is without soft-soaping with excuses.... it was horrible drafting and scouting if that is where the blame goes. when was the last first rounder amounted to anything between the late 90's - 2009? and where should the blame falls on? There have been 49 #2 picks in the history of the game. 20 of those guys have decent careers, unless you want to include guys like Ben Grieve or Darren Dreifort. That's 40% of #2 picks. And you are complaining about late 1st and supplemental draft picks. That kind of stuff happens based on dumb luck.
