QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) Y'all just don't get it. It's not the 2.5 inches of snow. The roads are complete ice. Making fun of Atlanta residents because their cars won't drive on ice is idiotic. You can see it in the picture above. The semi's headlights are reflecting off the street. Asphalt doesn't reflect light.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) Cars abandoned in Atlanta: Compared to cars abandoned in Chicago: Chicago is way, way worse, but there appears to be a pretty good layer of ice on the road in Atlanta. Also, this is nothing compared to zombie outbreaks

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) Chicago never gets tornadoes? Not nearly as often as southern states do. That's not the primary point though. If you don't know how to deal with certain weather conditions, it's not reasonable for you to know how to handle it. This is true for anything. Yeah, I hear about 4 inches of snow and ice on the road and think "well, I have 4 inches of compacted snow on my STREET right now, so that sounds like nothing," but the fact is, it is a big deal for those people.
-
So would Chicago handle a tropical storm well? Or an F1 tornado well? Because Atlanta calls that "summer." If you aren't used to typical weather conditions like that, you are going to be freaked out and unprepared. The s*** was turning to ice immediately and these people have no idea how to handle it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) Then why is he still here? There are still a number of other outfielders available on the free agent market, and it's possible, as was pointed out earlier, that the Sox simply have not gotten an offer they liked yet. There are a few teams that could certainly use him, but there are a lot of teams that probably view him as a 4th outfielder at this point - including the White Sox - with the potential to start. You don't give up a lot for that, and the Sox want to deal him as a starter. Come spring time, injuries will arise or teams will find out their initial options blow and they'll look to trade for him. Teams could also be waiting out the Sox, seeing that they have depth in the outfield, and basically saying to themselves "they'll have to deal him eventually." I'm glad Hahn is showing the patience he has because it will result in a greater return for the Sox.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 05:17 PM) He didn't have any trade value or he would have been gone already. The rest of MLB saw his play last year too. I think you are very wrong on this. Teams deal with flawed players all the time. Regardless of his boneheadedness, De Aza still provides positive value. I think we were spoiled with his 2012. I think he's a .260/.330/.400 kind of player with plus speed. He's not a good base runner, but currently has the speed to make up for those deficiencies. He's an average to above average MLB player. The problem the Sox have with De Aza is the Granderson conundrum. He's nearing 30 and he's providing inferior intrinsic value to the Sox in that he is preventing the Sox from getting an extended view of other players. I mention that no one would miss Danks Jr, but just the same as Phegley, he destroyed AAA pitching during his final go around. They may as well see if any of that can translate to the majors. If it can, they have, well, De Aza-blanc on their hands.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 11:46 PM) Excuse me? I think you mean the Rule-IV draft. I like this post.
-
Well, I think the thought is just that it's not ideal for De Aza to ride the bench because he loses value on the trade market there, which he does. Like I said, I have no problem with keeping him because there'll be room for him next year too. I think he'll end up getting dealt shortly anyways, so I'm not too concerned.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 04:02 PM) As long as Dunn hits fairly well the first few months of the season, and as long as the Sox are not in 1st place in July... Dunn will get traded near the deadline to a contender, in exchange for a lottery ticket prospect at best (org filler at worst). Someone like Andy Wilkins will play the LHH DH role for a few months if he does well at AAA, if not, they'll just rotate other guys through that slot. Then we'll see someone new at DH for 2015, possibly Viciedo if he progresses, possibly someone outside the org. In any case, he isn't going anywhere right now because right now he gets nothing of value. When they deal him, they may take the maximum amount they can too (on July 31st, it would be like everything but about $167K).

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 03:48 PM) There are basically saying, we made you famous and you can't profiteer off of it. Seriously, I bet very few people knew Manziel before coming to A&M. That's still a load of crap. It's exactly like the record industry taking like 93% of the cut from it's artists. -
I see it done a lot - even by the professional media - so I mean not to call anybody out, but I just so happened to see Joe do it which brought it to mind... It's actually the Rule 5 draft, not Rule V. Semantics I know, but it's better to be correct than incorrect. The Rule 4 draft is the First Year Player Draft. I'm also sure it won't be the last time I do this too.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) Again, Mark Reynolds just signed a minor league deal with a chance at $2 million. Adam Dunn is pretty much worthless right now. I am more than aware. That opportunity will never come. If it did, it would be a similar feeling to hitting the lottery. Honestly, I think Dunn is going to go out like Billy Koch did. Sox will eat a bit of the salary come July to get him out of town, and then he'll fade into oblivion.
-
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) Can they seriously compete with Detroit as they're built right now? I can't see how management would think so. If Dunn could bring a solid prospect in return for a year of his services then I'd be up for it. Yeah, I should say, if someone eats the whole $15 mill, they wouldn't even need anything back. They can just rotate guys in and out and keep De Aza in that situation. That's not going to happen though.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 02:10 PM) UZR actually has him as a slightly negative value LF over his career as well. At best he's a small upgrade over Viciedo but even in LF he's not a huge upgrade, and in RF his arm would be even more exposed than it is in LF. You can put him there and get adequate results but it's just not the best way to use either him or the backup OF spot. If I'm taking Viciedo out in the 8th inning, I want a serious defensive upgrade, and that's not De Aza. That was just an observation, otherwise there is no disagreement on this topic whatsoever.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 01:58 PM) Key point...the word "illegal" there...none of those kids were charged with or committed a crime, only NCAA violations. That's what I meant, under NCAA rules. They shouldn't even be slapped on the wrist. It shouldn't be illegal. They see an absolutely absurd amount of profit and the players see nothing. They're the biggest hypocrites in the world. -
From watching and deducing using stats, De Aza is a wreck in CF. It's passable in short stints, but he is not comfortable. On the other hand, I have no problem with him in the corners.

Northwestern Wildcat Players Attempt to Unionize
witesoxfan replied to StrangeSox's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 01:24 PM) Presumably something like this would be argued for by the players' union rep with the NCAA, whereas currently they don't really have a voice. That's my biggest issue with the NCAA. I like the idea of protections for the players in the event of injury and extending scholarships to players based on certain conditions (staying at the program 4 years or whatever), but at the end of the day, they still receive a lot of benefits from the college that normal students do not. But why is it illegal for Johnny Manziel to sell his autograph for money or the Ohio State players to sell their Rose Bowl rings for tattoos? They earned that status/reward and it's their own property, why can't they sell it? -
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) Sorry, I was mostly kidding. Nobody will really care if Jordan Danks is gone to any appreciable degree. It might make John very slightly sad is all. Like Tulsa said too, I want to keep Danks because I think he can be a valuable player for the Sox, but I'm not going to lose sleep if he ends up with the Tigers.

Where does the right to sell your own likeness play into this? -
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 01:17 PM) I don't think anybody is going to cry themselves to sleep if the Sox lose Jordan Danks, but the thing I wonder is do the Sox really want to pay a fourth outfielder over $4 million when they could keep Jordan Danks around at less than 25% of the cost. Danks proved to me last year that he has enough to stick as a fourth outfielder. He is a good defender and has good speed. That's really what you're looking for in a fourth outfielder. I certainly would not just give De Aza away as he has at least a little value, but I would certainly try to move him. I agree with absolutely everything in this post.
-
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 01:08 PM) Maybe John Danks? Last year was the first year they actually played on the same team. They were in the same dugout in 2012, but John was obviously on the DL. They're big boys and realize this is a business. If John can't handle not being around his brother, than the Sox need to get him off the team. This is all likely a moot point as the Sox will almost assuredly find a taker for De Aza by that time.
-
I've alluded to this before too, but the Sox don't HAVE to move De Aza. It'd be a waste of a valuable resource, but there are ways of making things work in the outfield where all of the players get their fair share of ABs. In that situation, Jordan Danks has to clear waivers before being sent back to the minors. Is anyone that concerned with losing Jordan Danks?
