  1. Quintana's stuff is perfectly fine and he has great command of his stuff. Nothing to see here.
  2. This is all assuming Beckham has the range to play SS. I personally do not believe he does and that this will all be a moot point.
  3. That injury throws a kink in a lot of things. Basically, I'm saying you can still get pretty good value for Peavy in the offseason. There are definitely a ton of reasons to trade him now, but you don't want to force the issue. Come the offseason, even if teams believe Alex Rios is an .800 OPS player, they are going more apt to try and acquire a guy (Joe Cheapo, we'll say) for less regarding both assets and finances that they believe can put up a .750 OPS, or play better defense, or whatever. When it comes to making a playoff birth, if you think Rios wins you one more game than Cheapo, you are going to spend the money on Cheapo to try and assure your spot in the playoffs.
  4. QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 03:32 PM) Heard a good 30 minute analysis on MLB Radio on XM on this very subject during spring training. He has no cartilage in his knee and can't push off the mound. IE: He is done. Sounds like Matt Nachreiner, except he never had cartilage to begin with. /NAMEDROP QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 03:39 PM) Not following you on Danks? The guy is coming back off shoulder surgery and hasn't been half bad. It could be next year before we see the improved Danks as it takes a while to come back from shoulder surgery and then reports have been the pitcher is actually better as the shoulder is stronger He should be OK, but he had the same surgery Johan Santana did. Santana had about a 2-3 month stretch of good pitching, was horrid for 5 starts after that, and hasn't pitched since. That was about a year ago. So, if you're keeping track at home, it's been about 2 full years out of the last 2 and a half that he's missed. After this season, Danks still has 3 years left on his deal.
  5. Shoulder injury. This is what can happen Fastball velocity went from 91.5 to 88.5. A 3 MPH drop in velocity is going to do a lot of damage. He might be a guy the Sox look at, but shoulder injuries typically force pitchers to either learn how to pitch again or learn how to live in the real world. EDIT: I was thinking shoulder. May have been his knees. Either way, not someone to count on
  6. The only hypothetical trade I can think of that would make sense in that instance is Sale and Viciedo (or some young hitter) for Stanton and Eovaldi. The Marlins can then atleast hang their hat on bringing in another high upside bat to replace Stanton.
  7. What value do the Marlins have for Chris Sale? This is an organization that, in the last 10 years, has traded for and developed young pitchers like Beckett, Burnett, Willis, Johnson, Sanchez, Nolasco, Dempster, and, sure, Pavano. You can probably find others too. They have a good pitching staff now too that will only get better as players get older and others develop. Now consider that the Marlins are so bad offensively that Juan Pierre is their leadoff hitter and Placido Polanco is getting significant playing time. They have developed two of the best hitters in the game - Stanton and Cabrera - and they have developed good hitters, in the past too. They don't have a lot right now and it's easily the worst offense in the NL. So, why would the Marlins trade Stanton AND Eovaldi for Sale? I don't think it would be a good trade for either team. I wouldn't trade Sale for Stanton, and the Marlins wouldn't trade Stanton for Sale.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 02:08 PM) Are you 100% sure you're being steered too much by this season's results and the 3 homers in the last week...the "full/completely healthy" argument, as well. But yeah, that 700 OPS number doesn't seem completely unreasonable. For a long stretch last season, Flowers was managing it in part-time play. The problem is all these guys with 700 MAX OPS numbers....at least from what we know of them now, maybe Gillaspie can be 750, maybe Phegley can put up 700, maybe Viciedo can put up 800. Carlos Sanchez would be lucky to put up 550-575 right now at the major league level, and 650-675 looks like his ceiling (at the moment). One thing we lack is anyone we can COUNT on putting up an 800 every year. Konerko and Dunn were supposed to be that, along with Dayan. I'm not trying to convince anybody, it's merely my opinion. I do believe that Phegley is for real. There are times you will see it. Take Magglio Ordonez for example. He was 2 years young, but he went from a .260/.330/.460 line to a .330/.365/.475 line. The Sox AAA team at that point was in Nashville, so I have no idea how that stadium played, but it's an example of a guy who busted out. No, I don't believe Phegley's max OPS is .700. I believe he can be anywhere from a .650 OPS guy to a .900 OPS guy; a guy who hits for average, a guy who hits for power, a guy who does both, or a guy who really doesn't do a lot of either. He might just be seeing the ball really well this year - I don't know. But when you consider all the other prospects in the system, and consider that Phegley was thought of as a good hitter coming out of college, it is entirely possible that he just needed to get healthy and into the swing of things to start producing. He was pushed through the system quickly even with those health problems, and he looks like a good player right now. Also consider that catchers do take a little while longer to develop into hitters. I can keep going on, but I really like Phegley moving forward, and I think I would have rated him 2nd behind Johnson if I could do it over.
  9. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 02:36 PM) This. Out of the tier of possible young STUD hitters...Stanton has to be the most obtainable you would think? Stanton/Eovaldi combo is a good start to a good package for Sale. Eovaldi has top of the rotation type stuff, & I have seen him live in the 98-99 mph range at times this season. No, not for Sale. If they actually trade him, they are trading him for prospects. If they hypothetically traded him for Sale, it would be Sale for Stanton straight up. You are not getting Eovaldi too.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) Why would you say that? Because it's easier to replace a RF than a SS of Alexei's caliber? Contracts/dollars? The decent season he's having so far, vs. Alexei's missing power and errors (somewhat mitigated by steals, TC/range and doubles). This is Peavy vs Rios. Peavy is a great starting pitcher, so he's always going to have good value, plus it's a relatively weak pitchers market. Rios is maybe a top 12 right fielder, but he's one of the best bats on the market right now. His value now versus where it will be in 5 months is drastically different. Alexei is going to have enough value right now simply because it's a position of weakness for many teams, but we can't act like Alexei is irreplaceable either. If the Sox can get solid value for him, especially if they get a shortstop prospect in a return trade, then they absolutely should do so.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 01:57 PM) I'm talking a 1:1 deal, like Stanton/Sale. Yes, a deep/quality rotation is always a must, but we're discussing young superstar for superstar trades... Sale/Harvey/Kershaw vs. Posey/Trout/Harper/Machado/Puig/Stanton/Cabrera, etc. Ehhh, maybe. Even if starters only go once every five games, if you can essentially pencil in 25 wins from their starts, you are a quarter of the way there. That's given that you have a capable offense too. It's not a black and white area here, there's plenty of gray when it would come to a hypothetical trade like that. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 01:57 PM) It's definitely risky. I'd rather sign good free agents to go with our own homegrown guys. But great free agents, not guys like Keppinger. I wish the White Sox had the Oakland A's ability to compete despite not being big spenders. Our talent evaluators must suck compared to teams like the A's and Rays. Building a team through free agency is one of the most expensive and cost inefficient ways to build a team. You don't build your team through free agency, you supplement it. Teams that go into free agency looking for an ace or a cleanup hitter usually have to shell out 5-9 years at extreme costs ($20+ million a year) and they watch those players decline rather quickly.
  12. Looking back, if I could do it over, I'd rate Phegley #2. I'm buying into his success over half a season because he's finally been healthy for more than a year now and able to really go at it, but, at least in the early going, it's carried up to the majors. It's just hard to project what he can actually do, because, given his history, even including all that's gone on, it's hard to project his min/mean/max and what he can actually bring to the table. Honestly, considering his numbers this year and the way he's swung the bat at the majors, I don't think maxing out at .280/.350/.500 is unreasonable, nor do I think .230/.300/.400 is unreasonable. We just don't know. That, and the fact that he's a bit older, (I think) pushed him down this list.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 10:55 AM) That and Arkham City remain this Bat-Geek's favorites. It reminded me of playing video games when I grew up. You didn't just progress throughout the story as if it were nothing. It legitimately got a lot harder as the game went on, and that final fight(s) with Joker are insane.
  14. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 01:31 PM) If they include Owings and/or Davidson I would be all over that deal. If Hahn doesn't turn one of our SPs into a ML ready hitter I'd be very disappointed. The Sox are dealing from a position of strength here with a sought after commodity. If you don't get the package you desire, then move on. The one player who really does need to be traded is Rios.
  15. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 11:54 AM) Who has that much cardboard lying around? Sacramento Kings probably do
  16. Anyone have a cardboard cutout of Rachel Phelps hanging around? Better yet, get one of Reinsdorf!
  17. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 10:57 AM) That is very true. I put that tweet first in the Rios thread and I don't know why but, I was thinking what if we package Peavy and Alexei to the DBacks for Didi, Delgado, Davidson and 2 lower tier prospects? Thoughts? Never going to get that much, and I don't know why Arizona would trade Didi for Alexei. All things considered, he's been really good for the DBacks and Alexei would be a downgrade. They want Peavy, and I'd be surprised if they want more than that...maybe a reliever. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see them ask for Chris Owings too.
  18. QUOTE (beautox @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 10:27 AM) Sox shouldn't be looking at Delgado they've got enough pitching and Erik Johnson is nearly ready. They should be looking at Adam Eaton or Pollock, 3B Matt Davidson and SS Chris Owings. Sox need near ML ready bats. You can never have enough pitching. It's cliche, but it's also true.
  19. Erik Johnson is definitely the clear cut #1 prospect in the system, but the rest of the top 5 is a bit convoluted after that. Top of the system has an incredible deal of talent, which is different than in years' past, but a lot of it has struggled badly. As was mentioned, Thompson and Anderson were tied at #2, and we decided to go with Anderson.
  20. I bought Arkham's Asylum in like November of 2011 (along with like 5 other games) and didn't pick it up until like a week and a half ago (still haven't picked up most of the other 5 games). Anyways, just beat it last night on normal. What a fun game.
  21. I think Ortiz is right on the edge on a lot of our lists. I had him at 26, and overall I'd say his ranking is probably in the top 30. He keeps putting up numbers, he'll move on up.
  22. July 17th or 18th. Let whoever it may be head to his new team and city rather than coming back for 1 or 2 games.
  23. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 05:51 PM) Jesus, you couldn't hit that with a javelin
  24. Clayton Kershaw has an ERA of 2.28 over his last 600 innings and is set to win his 2nd Cy Young and 3rd straight top 2 finish, but no, you're right, Juan Uribe.
  25. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 06:52 PM) Would I rather have the Cubs farm system? Of course. I just hate the hype machine that gets built up, predicting WS titles solely based on prospects, especially with the high bust rate in baseball. We have been hearing about the Royals incredible farm system for years, and what has that gotten them? To be fair, here were the Sox on the 2002 Top 100 list: 12. Joe Borchard, of, White Sox 23. Jon Rauch, rhp, White Sox 32. Corwin Malone, lhp, White Sox 94. Joe Crede, 3b, White Sox Corwin Malone. That's a blast from the past.
