Oh, and regarding teams taking other minor leaguers over others? If a team is in a rebuilding phase, do you think they are going to want a lefty reliever with control issues or a prospect with 35 homer potential? Hell, do you think they are going to want a lefty reliever with control issues or a former first round pick hitting .200 at AA but who is still loaded with talent? Because I think the Astros or Marlins would take Jared Mitchell over Santos Rodriguez right now. The jist of the list is that we combine potential, likelihood of reaching the majors, and likelihood of making an impact and sort it from there. If we went based solely on potential, Jared Mitchell would have made the list, but it's quite likely he's going to be a career minor leaguer at this point. Frankly, the same thing can be said for Zapata at this point in time.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...id=castil000phi Signed for $2.2 million in 2010. I'm guessing, even with a decent Mariners system at the time, he could have been considered a top 10 prospect in their organization, right? But since signing, he has struggled mightily. Ynoa also started off the year well, but he's far from a guarantee to make it too. If nothing else, we are staying conservative with guys until we get some results. If Zapata puts up a .700-.750 OPS (or whatever) in the DSL next year, I can pretty much assure you that he'll be a top 5 prospect in the system.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) How about this instead: Ellsbury (CF) Beckham (2B) Morales (1B) Rios (RF) McCann © Phegley (DH) Viciedo (LF) Gillaspie (3B) Ramirez (SS) Uhh, what'd you do with Dunn

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 11:46 AM) You're going to judge Viciedo that harshly based on 2 months of 2013? C'mon, you're better than that. His OPS is 670 now, that's still quite bad, but he's also two good weeks away from being in the same range he was last year. Now, of course, we expected him to get all the way up to the 800 OPS number, and that might not be in the cards, but watching him hit last night, you just can't give up on someone like that at age 24, especially considering how long other more highly rated prospects have taken to come around (in ages 26-28). And, even though Beckham's hitting well this year, it's not like he's is tearing it up with XB hits. Now, sure, we don't want the 15 homer, 50-55 RBI, 625-650 OPS Beckham back either, but it's way too early to likewise count Gordon has a lock for the 2014 team. His OPS was .630 before last night's explosion, which means he's also two ordinary 2013 weeks away from being back to .630-.650. To suggest he's been anything less than a disaster is grasping at straws. He's up over 1000 career plate appearances in the majors, and while it takes some guys longer, you would like to see that OPS higher than it was last year. Maybe he'll figure it out in the 2nd half, and maybe he can start hitting like he did shortly after coming off the DL, but until then, he's really nothing more than Juan Uribe at the plate. Also, not sure where you got the idea I was giving up on him. Just saying he's been a disaster. If you can find a trade worth making then by all means, make it, but there's no point in releasing him or anything at this point. Also, unless he's traded, there's virtually no reason to not have Beckham on the roster. Even at $5 mill, having him play 2B or SS or whatever will be worth it. They need to put someone in the lineup next season.

In the one instance, we have numbers, video, a multitude of scouting reports of those who have seen him practice and play live games. In the other, we have REPORTS from people WHO HAVE TALKED TO SCOUTS who have seen Zapata in batting practice. Which of those is more reputable to you?

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 11:46 AM) Weren't players such as Viciedo, Silverio, Olacio (and possibly others) ranked before coming over to the states? To me, the only difference here is Zapata is more highly regarded, which makes the decision make less sense to me. Johan Cruz is a very highly thought of shortstop prospect who signed for $450k last year. Through his first 33 games and 136 plate appearances, his splits are .105/.172/.121/.293 and he also has 12 errors in 77 attempts. Yes, that is a .293 OPS and a .912 fielding percentage. There have been plenty of others who have signed for $1.5+ million throughout the majors who have so called superstar potential who put up low .700 OPS's before eventually being tried at pitcher or released. When we have no track record and nothing to base our beliefs on but hearsay, it's best to reserve judgment. Some had him ranked in the top 10, others in the top 25, and some didn't have him ranked at all.

QUOTE (beautox @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 09:42 AM) Does Alexei make sense for Detroit for Castellanos? I say this because as it stands Detroit isn't going to get Castellanos' bat in their line up any time soon as well as a few other reasons: 1.) Peralta is going to get a 50 game suspension soon enough and is a FA after this, there is a dearth of SS in the FA market next season 2.) Miggy and Fielder aren't moving off their current positions for the foreseeable future 3.) the platoon of Dirks and Tuiasosopo is providing adequate defense and offensive production, while Castellanos' defense in the outfield leaves a lot to be desired and Avisail Garcia isn't going to learn anything more at AAA and needs to take his lumps at the major league level. I don't think I've ever disagreed with the logic in one of your posts more. #1) I don't see Detroit dealing Castellanos in the division, let alone for a singles hitting shortstop. #2) Fielder and Cabrera have absolutely nothing to do with Castellanos. #3) Dirks and Tuiasosopo are not something you put in LF for the next 5 years and are happy with it. It will suffice for this year, but an upgrade is always welcome. #4) Castellanos is 21 and has plenty of time to improve his defense in the outfield. #5) Avisail Garcia has 69 PAs at AAA. I really think we can forget the idea of Castellanos joining the White Sox any time soon. If he does, I'd almost certainly be just fine with it, but I don't see it happening. I think they are and have been showcasing Garcia because they don't believe in him long term, but perhaps that's just me.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 09:22 AM) lol. Typical Chicago Bulls. lmao. I knew this would be the thinking. What vision! Oh well. I guess we can keep poppin' in the old 90's VHS tapes while LeBron gobbles up every ring in site. So you are saying all the single ladies DID have a ring on it, but LeBron ate them.

So Epstein's plan is still "throw money at the problem."

Jackson is more appealing than Kozma, but I don't think it's a necessity. More than anything, it's about getting talent in the organization. Wong is definitely a name that fits the bill though.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 11:33 PM) The point is when you're 17 games below .500 you pretty much suck. There's no riddles or anything that need to be decoded here. This is a bad baseball team and organization overall. 1 playoff appearance in 8 years at a time when making the playoffs is easier than it's ever been? Pathetic. Well it's 0 for 1 since the new system went in, so there's that. And they have had 4 legitimately good teams in the last 8 years, and 5 in the last 9. The pitching broke down in the second half of 2006, they made it in 2008 (against all odds), they won 88 games in 2010 and missed by like 4 games thanks in large part to petty differences between the GM and the manager, and the entire team broke down due to fatigue and mild injuries the last two weeks of the season last year. Acting as if this team has been garbage over the last 8 years is absolutely wrong and you know it. Now, acting as if this team is good is also wrong. Father time appears to have finally met Konerko, the shortstop's once dwindling power has finally become non-existent, third base has nothing but mediocrity or worse set up, they've been running with a catcher who can't hit a fastball without cheating, the young left field prospect has been a colossal disaster, the centerfielder who got on base last year is, for whatever reason, trying to hit home runs now and striking out like crazy. Add on to it injuries and an older team in general with no real good answers on the way, and yes, it is time to rebuild. To what extent I think only the front office and Hahn know, but it's absolutely time.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 07:55 AM) Dunn is now 58th highest OPS in MLB for the moment. Rios at 68th, 10th out of 20 qualified RFer's. RF, interestingly, has stronger numbers than LF, especially the bottom quintile. Just a theory, but I'm guessing you will typically play more more inexperienced guys in LF, and because you don't need a good arm to play LF, you will also see a lot of speedy, tablesetter types up there too who don't have a good arm, whereas right fielders will have more established players with good arms. Also, there can always be outliers too - guys with particularly low or high numbers in either spot while the rest even out.

I just saw a couple pitches, but it looked like Castro had good movement, though, yeah, velocity was down. If you keep him in the bullpen and work on building up arm strength, he could be an effective reliever at 92-93 MPH with all that movement.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 09:01 PM) In news that surprises exactly nobody, one of Hernandez friends rolled on him http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=9464868 Kind of weird though, Ortiz said that Wallace told him that Hernandez did it. Wasn't he in the car when it happened? Could have been looking out while Wallace and Hernandez took care of him, and Wallace said "he did it." Bunch of fun stuff came out about that today, including Hernandez both closing the door on the police when they asked him about the death and him telling police he didn't answer the door when they came because he saw who it was. What a winner.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:30 PM) Hechavaria on the Marlins (from Jays) would be another example at the SS position. I'll do the opposite and take the potential (higher ceiling) on Moustakas, simply knowing that we've got to find guys with the potential to hit 25-35 homers at the corners, and can't be satisfied with average or slightly above average if we legitimately want to compete with DET. (Not to mention Buxton/Sano arriving in MN, Kyle Gibson....and the Indians and Royals being ahead of us in many respects...Hahn has his work cut out for him. It almost seems like it will be a miracle now to compete again before 2015 or 2016.) I have no problem with the White Sox taking a chance on a Mike Moustakas (and again, I'm using real names but assuming they're generic terms). I'm not trading Santiago or Quintana for that. And the Twins do scare me the most with Sano and Buxton (this time it is actual names), but I think, if anything, we've seen that the pitching talent at the MLB level is just supremely talented. There was a time when you saw technically sound, mediocre talent come up and hit right away, but you just don't see that. Really, if you have a guy putting up an .825 OPS in the minors, you have to expect him to put up a .675 OPS or worse in the majors. It's just absurd.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:03 PM) My problem with this is the word "a". Given that these guys have really started to establish themselves as above average starters who will keep getting better, yes I'd consider it if there was a top flight guy coming back, but with their contract status I hope that they've set themselves up as guys who should bring back multiple pieces in addition to the headline guy. **As a quick aside, these trades wouldn't happen, but merely hypotheticals for example's sake** I would trade Quintana or Santiago for Kyle Seager. I would not trade Quintana or Santiago for Mike Moustakas. It fills a gaping hole (that's what she said) and is absolutely someone that can be a centerpiece of the team for years and has already shown good success at the MLB level. There are others that are harder to judge - Andrelton Simmons is one of those. Valuable young SS, but has struggled with the bat and never had eye popping numbers in the minors.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 04:31 PM) I like Santiago quite a bit. However, if they got a cost controlled offensive player/offensive players that would be starters for years to come, you'd have to consider it. Trading one of Quintana or Santiago for a cost controlled, high upside offensive player really is a good idea. Keeping them is a good idea too. Trading them because you're "rebuilding" is a Marlins-esque bad idea.
