QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 04:08 PM) And that is why coaches are paid millions of dollars. They have to figure out a way to balance it and make it work. Against 90-99% of the teams the Bulls can just out defense them and win. Against the Heat/Thunder, they are going to be nights where they have to score points too. To get to the next level the Bulls are going to have to find a way against those teams to score 90-100 points because you cant shut them down every night. You need better rotations in games like that. Deng going 42 minutes or whatever against a team like the Knicks who don't play defense is one thing, but the Heat/Thunder/Spurs are going to take increased defensive intensity plus they will play better defense, requiring even great energy expenditure.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 03:57 PM) You really think a coach would take that task? I don't. That's most likely someone else on staff. Whose staff is it? Who do you think made that call to begin with? This type of thing reminds me of life in the fraternity. The President acted as the delegate of the officer board to make sure all officers got their work done. The officers delegated smaller tasks to the members of the fraternity. At the end of the day, anything that happens in that fraternity comes back to the President, and while he can have his own punishment on his officers and/or his players, if enough people start screwing up, it's ultimately his head that rolls. You are blowing smoke up my ass if you think Meyer is innocent or he didn't know anything was happening.

Just yesterday, the Suns got Eric Bledsoe and the expiring contract of Caron Butler, and all they gave up was Jared Dudley. Dudley's a solid player, but jesus, come on. The Clippers were happy to get Dudley and Reddick back for their valuable assets. Milwaukee just wanted to get something for Reddick, and they got 2 draft picks. Each team gave up drastically different amounts, and while the Bucks end up with the short end of the stick, it's better to wind up with something rather than nothing.

I don't think anyone is saying Urban Meyer put the gun in Aaron Hernandez's hand and forced him to shoot Odin Lloyd. I think people are saying when Aaron Hernandez, as a 17 year old, broke a dude's f***ing eardrums, Urban Meyer talked to the sheriff (who just so happened to be a UF donor) and said "make these go away." I'm sure it happens a lot, especially in SEC land. College football, more than probably any other sport, is corrupt. If you have a coach with that kind of sway, more f***ing power to you.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 03:27 PM) It seems to me like this is the format they've been trying to follow the last year+. They have not had #2 with Rose. #1 has never really been a problem though. You hope Jimmy Buckets can at least resemble that guy, but Hinrich, Snell, and Teague don't inspire a lot of confidence in that regard.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) Well said! Hahn is not new to the organization. Who knows what his philosophy is. There is nothing wrong with this rant. They didn't hire an outside and he was also the highest paid asst. GM in baseball because J.R. didn't want to lose him. It's his time to shine. The draft class they brought in as well as the signing of Zapata have shown that he is going to do his best to re-establish the minor league system. If he doesn't make any trades in the next month, then you can probably start questioning, but the odds of that are slim to none.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 12:20 PM) Irony. I thought that was a good quote. It sounded like he taking ownership in saying that he's part of the problem. I agree. I have actually grown fond of Rios. A better than league average right fielder and I don't think, statistically speaking, Hunter Pence comparisons are too far off base. I also think that, especially with the level of outfielders available and the general direction of the franchise that the Sox absolutely must trade Rios this deadline.

The Heat won, what, 66 games this year? How many games would they win next year without LeBron? I mean, argue what you will about Thibs overusing his players, but arguing for regression is absolutely ridiculous. You are talking 62 wins, 62 win pace, and 45 wins without a top 3 player in the league.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) Injuries, and the fact that's just not ever going to be a true power hitter, really derailed his prospect status. That, and his .714 OPS in AA.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 10:59 AM) So you agree that in 3 years they went from 62 to 45, you just are semantically arguing that year 2 technically isnt a regression, but then you dont even talk about the fact that the "62 win team" in year 2 was bounced in the first round... Guess if you consider going from EC Finals to out in round 1 staying the same, well you sir have me. BECAUSE THEIR f***ING BEST PLAYER TORE HIS ACL

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 08:45 AM) Watch the video of that catch and tell me how many yards or feet you think he covered from start to finish... It's a joke dude, just giving you s***

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 10:29 AM) They are 21 and 23 years old and are the Rays number 2 and 3 rated prospects. Also saved the Rays some money which is what they needed. You think that trade will help the cubs when they need talent in two years? The rays have not missed Garza and have two highly rated prospects to boot. The cubs are almost 50 games under .500 with Garza. And I still don't think they pantsed the Cubs. Getting pantsed is like the Erik Bedard to Seattle trade, or the Pierzynski to San Francisco trade. They may also be 50 games under .500 with Garza, but, #1, how much of that is from losing 101 games last year, and #2, how much did Garza contribute to the offense scoring the 3rd fewest runs in the NL last year? I feel like I've had this conversation before. I won't say it was the Cubs best use of resources, but considering the value, I still see nothing wrong with it. Lee has not put up very good numbers in the Rays' system, though he's apparently a super defender. I remember hearing similar things about Chin-lung Hu too. And Archer is merely a reliever at this point, and not nearly as cool as his super agent brother. I'm not faulting Tampa for making the trade either, because it was something they really had to do. You can argue value any way you'd like, but saying the Cubs got pantsed, as in taken to the house...that's just wrong.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 08:55 AM) For comparisons sake Mark Reynolds, who the year before being traded never had a month like Adam is having right now, got a return of 2 major league relievers. Now I know Reynolds wasn't making the money Dunn is but if I'm a team like the Yankees I would certainly take on that contract. This past month has been great for Adam, I think he could really help a team out. I think you underestimate the value of good relief pitching. Every year a reliever gets dealt for a good return. Mike Adams a few years ago got the Padres Joe Wieland who at the time had an era under 2 in 20 starts split between A+/AA and Robbie Erlin who was also a damn good starter between A-AA to the tune of a 2.50 era, a whip below 1 and 279 ks in his last 261 innings. Both players have made starts in the big leagues since. The Orioles traded Koji Uehara to the Rangers too. Got some dude named Chris Davis in return. Those guys all had an additional year, but teams will give up good prospects for good relievers.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 10:12 AM) There's a reason the offseason slogan wasn't "we're giving the injured John Danks a $13.75 million raise, keeping underachieving Gavin Floyd and giving him an extra $2.5 million, and boosting the salaries of Adam by $1 million, an aging Paulie by $1.5 million and an aging Alexei by $2 million." Yes, because it's long and not very catchy If they would go with something like "GIVING MONEY TO s***TY PLAYERS," you would have seen far better results.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 09:53 AM) That was a mod responding to a slightly hammered post requesting ideas for a new screen name. I mentioned I was a Konerko fan, orginally from Pittsburgh, and my last name is Hogan. The new name just stuck...or I was too afraid to ask for another one. Who knows what they'd give me. From now on, your fraternity name is.....Flounder. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 08:53 AM) Yeah, I think Adam Schefter tweeted that last night. Polian got a lot of crap for gloating about that. Guess what, most teams passed on Hernandez 3 times before the Patriots took him, so it isnt as if Polian was some genius I plan on writing about this soon, but EVERY team picks up s***heads. It's the NFL. Generally speaking, these guys aren't smart and they haven't always been surrounded by the best people. Hell, Marvin Harrison was considered to be one of the good guys, a quiet type, a hard worker, and like 2 months after he retired he was involved with a shooting. Who in the hell would have ever guessed that?

I think all this year has verified for us is that Johnson can hang. Next year is going to be far more important. He's put up better numbers at an older age and a lower level than Brandon Short. Short has become a non-prospect.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 08:26 AM) Since this thing's basically over, there's no reason they shouldn't give Rienzo and Simon Castro some spot stats in July/August, and Erik Johnson in September, unless they decide his workload's been increased too much and shut him down. Castro has been absolutely brutal as a starting pitcher. He deserves zero spots starts. He's been much better in relief, so I have no problem if they give him a chance to do that.

Buddy just texted me this: "Bill Polian is talking about how he is the man because he passed on drafting Aaron Hernandez, but he drafted Rae Carruth in the first round in 1997" That's awesome

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 08:29 PM) 3/5, single, double, homer, #8....6 of them to the right side of the field, 17 RBI's, 2 K's 47/106=.443 Also had an excellent running catch where he must have covered 60 yards to snag it all the way in front of the 1B stands, sprinting in full stride. Second game in a row he's going to have a shot at the cycle in his final AB. Last time, he K'ed, fishing for a FB high and inside out of the zone. Isn't left field a little more than 60 yards away from the 1B stands?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 08:31 AM) Garza has been injured for a good portion of his time with the Cubs Still better than what the Rays have gotten from that deal to this point.
