Sox-Rangers 2/26 spring game thread
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2013 Season in Review
Mercy rule time -
I don't believe Keith Law has anything against the White Sox...I believe he is brutally honest and a lot of times gives overly harsh opinions of prospects. For whatever reason, I do believe that, to some extent, BP does have something out for the White Sox. I mean, for f*** sakes, they moved Arodys Vizcaino UP on this list after he threw exactly 0 innings last year. I think their scouts don't like Hawkins. His numbers speak for themselves.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 01:15 PM) I was not in the clubhouse (not that anyone here was) so I can't say definitively but I don't think it was the fact that Swisher has "personality" that was the problem. The clubhouse seems to have plenty of "personality " now with guys like Peavy, Beckham, Thornton and I'm sure several others who we haven't even heard about their stories. I don't think that Konerko, Dye, A.J. etc, were against having fun and playing practical jokes on teamates, I think that Swisher must have taken the fun in a direction that no one else cared for. I'm thinking along the lines that maybe Swisher made it a little "nastier" or "dirty' (like the blow up doll) that his teamates didn't care for it. Just a hunch. It's all loose conjecture anyways, but this seems most logical. I forgot that team had Toby Hall on that team. God those shaving cream pies got old.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 01:33 PM) So Te'O was having phone sex with Lennay during many of those late night convos, sick. /facepalm This is why I wait before I have sex with a girl before I have phone sex with a girl

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) You might find someone to give you a few bucks for it, but nowadays, without any kind of authentication, people won't shell out big bucks for anything. Maybe if you had a picture of one of the guys signing the actual item, you might get something, but otherwise, keep it yourself. He's likely going to sell them with another car he remodels and go to the Superbowl again next year.

I think thinking about 2008 made me remember this video, and thankfully, it still works. http://www.tmz.com/videos?autoplay=true&am...3;id=0_658ihpm5

Call it a hunch, but I don't think it was just Ozzie. I just don't think Swisher was very popular in the locker room. The whole bat incident seemed to rub a lot of people the wrong way. It seemed that team had a lot of conflicting personalities and egos, yet they won the division.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 09:02 AM) He definitely referred to his pipe. Nice to know JR Smith is posting on the board.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 09:09 AM) Yeah, that's the f*** of it, if he really wants to wait until he feels normal, it's next year. If he really wants to wait until the impossible 110%, it's never! "Even though I'm only 24, I have to retire from the game of basketball because I will never be 110% again."

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 08:52 AM) They have been especially good at this with pitchers, but that shows they have hit on plenty of position players as well. You don't just get players through the draft. The only guy on the team the Sox paid max price for is Adam Dunn. Swisher too, and the Sox are still kicking themselves for that one, but they wouldn't have won the division in 2008 without the miniscule contributions of Nick Swisher. QUOTE (balfanman @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 09:07 AM) I agree, but I'm really talking about a bat that is more than just a contributor. We really need at least one of our younger guys to turn into a real impact, top/middle of the order bat. Ordonez and Lee, even Crede as short as his career was are good mentions. Konerko wasn't really a product of our system, but you're right, we can always trade for pieces. Mike Cameron was though.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 08:43 AM) Also worth pointing out again that the Sox have had success plucking guys out who were undervalued by other teams for whatever reason. 2 guys in our current lineup fit that description: De Aza and Ramirez. It doesn't matter where production comes from if it is production. The Sox have historically made a killing doing that. Pierzynski, Dye, Iguchi, Thome, Quentin, Floyd, Youkilis, Rios, even Peavy - the Sox have generally been very good about buying low and either selling or not bringing back at high value.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 08:26 AM) Magglio Ordonez Carlos Lee, Paul Konerko. They haven't really had many decent prospects in a while though either. They've had Konerko in there for close to 15 years now, and they've done a pretty good job of finding good replacements in those spots for about 8 years now too. You hope Thompson can develop the sort of contact ability to hit .250, because he could hit 30+ homers with that sort of average, and then you hope Hawkins develops really nicely too.
-
QUOTE (balfanman @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 08:12 AM) True, but if none of their current crop of youngster turn into anything special then you're looking at essentially replacing Rios, Dunn & Konerko with free agents of equal or greater offensive value. At the current rate of inflation you are talking a lot more than 40 million. If you don't replace all three, and no younger stars emerge, then you're going to have a struggling offense at best Of course, but assuming that none of them develop into major league hitters is just as naive as assuming all of them do.

I think the best thing would be to take the hot tub treatment. Feet and lower legs in first, then up to the waist, then all the way in. You want him to start his first game back just so he can get the ovation, but you really don't want him playing any more than 16-20 his first few back. Then you can up that to 22-26, and then kick it up above 30+ mins from there. By postseason time, he'd be playing full games again.

QUOTE (Cali @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 11:43 PM) For another team. The Sox have invested too much in him to do that now. If they were gonna do it 2010 would have been the time. That would be the worst idea. I mean, unless you want Brent Morel, Conor Gillaspie, or Carlos Sanchez (an extremely young, though promising, singles hitter) starting for your team. This is either going to be Beckham's last year in a Sox uniform, or he's going to be productive. He's going to get paid around $4-5 mill next year and team-controlled time is running thin. They can only invest so much in him. Beyond ANY of that, it's not even March, and he has a completely different stance and grip. Give it a little time. If it doesn't work, it won't work, and the Sox can look for a replacement come midseason if they're in contention.
-
QUOTE (TomSeaverFan @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 06:18 PM) If Sox pitching staff is truly "great" as you say, the team will win the division. I'm not convinced it's great. I hope you are right. I think it is. Between the Sox and Tigers, the biggest point of contention is going to be the #3 and #4 spot. The top two are a virtual wash depending on health (where thr Tigers have the edge in durability if for Peavy alone). I think the Sox pen is quite a bit deeper and it should be better too. Danks/Floyd vs Fister/Sanchez is an edge for Detroit but I think it could just as easily favor the Sox by year's end.
-
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 09:05 PM) Interesting fact: the Sox are now 0-0-2 in zero-run games Like QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 09:15 PM) 2 batters, 2 k's for Lindstrom in the game today. Viciedo hbp and was taken out at the time. Septimo hurt his lower leg and was taken out. Viciedo was apparently precautionary. Didn't see or read anything on Septimo but hopefully it's not serious.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 04:20 PM) I'm not sure what he will play. His hands arent very good and he's too small to be a RB. Hands can be worked on, even if they never become awesome, so he could be a formidable receiver or atleast a decent player out of the backfield. I also think he could add a little bulk to make it as a running back, and I think he'd be explosive out of the backfield. He'd also be an incredible Wildcat or read-option QB (though not a full-time read option...basically just as a wrinkle in the offense). I could see him returning kicks too, and others see him playing QB. I think he's the closest thing there's been to Kordell Stewart in a while.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 03:53 PM) Denard Robinson said that. His 40 time was not as fast as I expected. He didnt even test as good as Pryor did. Honestly, I think 4.43 is about in line with what I expected. He's going to be a fun NFL player.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 03:24 PM) Eh, I played it, someone wanted to gamble and won out. But it was still fun. And I knew where my money went, or at least a portion of it. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Glad to hear you had a good time

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 03:11 PM) I don't see any reason for the Sox to field a team this year. More afraid of Cleveland. They're 4-0 to starting Spring Training. They are for real dog. -

QUOTE (southside_hitman @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 02:57 PM) 4.) The Tigers have much more talent than the Sox and it is unlikely that we can compete with them this season. I just watched Castellanos, their LF blast an opposite filed home run off the Phillies Papelbon like he was hitting a hitting practice pitcher. Casteallanos, Austin Jackson and Tori Hunter in the outfield, Prince and Miguel Cabrera at first and third, VMart at DH , etc, gives them a frmidable line-up. Then of course their rotation is stronger than the Sox. There will be more Detroit fans at our home games vs. Detroit this season than Sox fans. Nick Castellanos is not going to be their LFer this year. On top of that, he put up an incredible .678 OPS last year in AA after being promoted from A+ (where he absolutely destroyed the pitching). Also not sure how this has anything to do with why you don't enjoy Spring Training, but seems to have more to do with why you aren't going to enjoy the season, even though not a single game has been played yet. (Oh, and the Sox lineup is just fine and, in fact, scored more runs than the Tigers did last year even though they had the Triple Crown winner in the middle of their lineup. The pitching staff is just fine too, considering they allowed 6 more runs than the Tigers all year, lost Brett Myers and Francisco Liriano (not concerned), and bring back Danks this season) ((I will never stop loving people who freak out about the season during the first few games of Spring Training though. That just might be my favorite part))
