QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 12:31 PM) At this point, I can't fathom why any team would believe there's a simple flaw in his swing that can be corrected. He's tried a hundred corrections...to the point where I can't believe he'd have any confidence in what he was doing. But if you want to make the comparison...yeah, the Joe Borchard for Matt Thornton trade would be a comp. The most anyone would give up for Beckham is a struggling failed prospect on the verge of being non-tendered. Even if a team wants Beckham for that reason, they're not giving you anything but their own scrap heap in order to get him. Well that's exactly it, and that's never going to be worth it to the White Sox unless they seem the same thing. A Carlos Quentin in waiting or something like that.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 01:19 PM) Kenny tried to trade for him in 2010 and Berkman said no. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 01:25 PM) He had the Yankees interested then... He probably doesn't have that now. That's it. He didn't say no, per se, he just said that the Yankees offer a better chance at the postseason. He wasn't wrong either. Had the Yankees not come calling, he would have been a member of the White Sox. However, I recall reading that he's been doing some coaching for the Rice baseball team. He seems to enjoy it and hadn't decided one way or the other what he was going to do. Considering the coaching narrative of it, I would say it's Houston or bust.

I think Berkman either goes back to Houston or retires. I would be surprised if he's considering anything else at this point.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 12:25 PM) Beckham has effectively zero trade value right now. He's not negative like Floyd would be to some teams because he doesn't have a huge salary, but he's a first-year arb player, so he won't be underpaid any more, and if he puts up another year like 2011-2012, he's going to be non-tendered at the end of this year. Basically, if I'm a team that might like to try him out, I might as well wait until the end of the year when I can get him off the scrap heap, rather than trade something for him now. Unless of course you see the flaw in his swing and want to guarantee that you can acquire him.

Those are pretty good. Disappointing top 10 - I thought 30-50 was much better.

What's wrong with letting girlfriends on the charter? If guys getting some helps them hit better, then bring hookers with too.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 10:06 AM) What is backing into the playoffs and getting clobbered in the first round really worth? Does that really make you feel that much better about the Bears? It does nothing for me. Because you still have to play the game. Even considering what they did in 2006-07, I don't think anybody saw the Giants beating the Packers or 49ers (especially considering both teams beat them in the regular season) last year, yet that's exactly what they did. If you get to the playoffs, you have a chance.

QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 08:33 AM) I'm "citing" them as an indicator of how some members of the national sports media perceive the Sox and their off season "improvements". Because, as we've learned over the last 10 years, experts opinions of where teams stand in the offseason is incredibly important and predictive in nature.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 04:19 PM) If Adam Dunn can just bring that batting average up to like .260 or so he will be a monster in 2013 That's a bit like asking Konerko to hit .340. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 04:22 PM) Why on Earth would the Padres want either of those guys? To spend extra money on people who won't be with them a year from now? Floyd in particular is worth less than nothing to the Padres. They'd probably take him in exchange for nothing if the ChiSox paid 2/3 of his contract. If you want to get Headley back for Floyd and Beckham, you need to add in Sale. And the Sox won't deal Sale, as they shouldn't. Any Headley talk is effectively pointless.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 02:33 PM) More like unrealistic expectations for a roster with sub-par talent just because they are in Brooklyn and have a crazy owner. When your second-best player is a toss-up between Joe Johnson, Brook Lopez, and Gerald Wallace, and Deron is playing gimpy, you have a problem. Needs more CJ Watson

Yeah, this is a crock. I'm sure similar things were said when the first video game game out, and the TV, and the radio. People will continue to find faults with "stuff" and will continue trying to improve the experience. I'm sure in some examples it will be perfectly true - just as it's been true with the hardcore gamer who does nothing but play video games, just as it did with the couch potato who did nothing but watch TV.

QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 09:41 AM) I didn't say that...I said I'd wait and see if/how the $7.5 million is re-allocated. The Sox of 12/27/2012 have some holes to fill; let's see if/how they're filled. BTW, on ESPN.COM baseball "power rankings", the Sox are currently ranked 23rd in MLB, 1 slot ahead of the Cubzzz. I guess I'm not the only one who hasn't seen much improvement on the South Side this off season. It's certainly possible they won't spend it on the MLB team. There's still some offseason left and some solid players still available. It's also possible they allocate it towards the draft and the international free agent scene. I'd be OK with that too. They might save it for moves come midseason. And I'm glad you're checking the power rankings on December 27th. Must be weird seeing the 23rd ranked team have the same record as the 1st and 30th ranked teams.

So Andruw Jones got drunk, beat his wife, grabbed her by the ankle, dragged her down the stairs, threatened to kill her, and then passed out. Merry Christmas! -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 08:41 AM) Haven't changed my tone at all. I will defend AJ vs. all the haters. I believe he will be missed far more than his numbers would indicate. I understand not paying a 36 year old catcher a ton of money. If it were my decision, I would have brought him back on a one year if he would have taken it. Maybe they have other moves in mind. I do think most of the Tyler Flowers love will be gone this time next year. I think there's one "hater," and even he has merely said that AJ is overrated. I think you're blowing this a little out of proportion. I could see Flowers busting, but I've liked what I've seen out of him. I think he's going to be a valuable member of the team next year. I think his style of play will frustrate some who will still want him gone even with a .750+ OPS. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 08:43 AM) My guess is that they are waiting to see how Flowers does before looking for a replacement/platoon partner. Other than Salty (via trade) or Olivo, who could they go after and not spend a lot of money? See what Fisk is doing. He's only 65.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 08:35 AM) You are taking this wrong. Losing AJ is fine, as long as he's replaced adaquately. It could be a disaster if they think Flowers/Gimenez is the answer. Flowers started 41 games last year. He had to be lifted for a pinch hitter 10 times. I know he was great in Birmingham several years ago. That doesn't make him a star. If they aren't looking for a catcher now, there's a good chance they will be in May or June. You'll never know until you give him a chance. You also changed your tone quite a bit in that post from most of the others in the thread. On top of that, I doubt they go into the season with merely Gimenez. I don't believe he is an adequate backup. You want someone who has started in the past so, at the very least, you have an insurance policy.

Jason Grilli is going to be just fine, and the Pirates got a pretty good deal of value out of a player they weren't going to keep. I like this deal for them.
