QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 05:16 PM) If you sharpen it, doesn't it become an axe? It becomes a mace, because it will have sharp spikes on it. Close though, you'll be spared through this round of eliminations -

Good lord no, unless I have a creepy, rich, hairy uncle who's a wanted felon but turns out to actually be a really good guy who wants to buy it for me after discovering my new found talent, I'm f***ed -

QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 03:26 PM) His receivers are Welker, Reggie Wayne and Desean jackson. His QB is Joe flacco. His Rbs are CJ2k, Martin, and Mendenhall. I personally couldn't justify that trade if I were him (unless it's PPR, in which case it's a bit different). Elite QBs like Brady, Brees, and Rodgers (and a few others here and there can be argued too) are the best way to get consistent points on a weekly basis (which is why I will always do what I can to get one), but, assuming it's a RB, RB, WR, WR, R/W flex as in standard leagues, he's going to be playing a flex option every week in Jackson/Mendenhall/waiver pickup. Not my team though, and like I said, if he makes it, you're looking great.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 03:39 PM) That would indeed be controlling for quality of pitcher, by using the pitcher's average. I understand now. You should make it happen It makes sense in theory, but there are holes in it as well - some pitchers will pitch better against teams than others (ala sometimes teams hit finesse or power better), there will be different offenses, they will pitch in different ballparks, and there will be sample size issues as well. I think the best way to try to control for this is to see how catchers call pitches (and subsequently how often and when they get shaken off). From there you can attempt to match pitcher to catcher with their strengths, but even that is going to be rather clunky.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 03:29 PM) Well yeah. I can't even count how many times I've seen people who oppose WAR (or pretty much all advanced statistics) say "ZOMG BEN ZOBRIST SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE MVP THEN. HE HAD THE HIGHEST WAR IN 2011!!!" And then when I remind them for the umpteenth time that no one uses bWAR, and fWAR is where it's at, they use that as a reason why WAR is stupid, because 2 different publications calculate it differently. It's a headache. Explain it as the difference between Pendleton and Grande Canadian, or Grey Goose and Karkov, or Guinness and Old Milwaukee Light (or whatever). One has a good interpretation, one has a poor interpretation, but at the end of the day, they will both generally get the job done - one just gives a far worse headache than the other.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 03:16 PM) I'm pretty sure if the MVP were voted based entirely on sabermetrics, Frank Thomas would have won zero MVPs. Led the AL in WAR in 1994 (7.3), 75.4 batting runs created.

QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 03:12 PM) My team has no shot at the playoffs so im working on a blockbuster to send to a team thats right on the edge of the playoffs. Im sending: Tom Brady (Not keepable) Adrian Peterson (Not keepable) Hoping to get: Doug Martin (5th round keeper) Randal Cobb (14th round keeper) and Demarco Murray (7th round keeper) Depending on his depth elsewhere, I can't even imagine why he'd make this deal. Even if we say that Peterson is a slight upgrade over Martin, Cobb has still been one of the most productive receivers in the NFL over the past 4-6 weeks. His QB has to be pretty bad and he has to have depth at WR. If it goes through, it's fantastic for you and maybe him, depending on how the rest of his team looks.

QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 02:07 PM) When people pitch around you to get to Prince Fielder, you're having a pretty special year. Or you just assume that if you throw meatballs to Prince Fielder, he'll let them pass and wait for the tofu

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 02:38 PM) It's easy to feel bad for him. He got f***ed by the Marlins. They screwed him over. He's a total class act and he got hosed. If Ozzie had pulled this crap of reneging on a verbal agreement to not trade him he'd be buried on this site. Ozzie Guillen has absolutely nothing to do with this situation, there was no need to bring him up. As my first order as mod (in the wrong forum!) I ask that we refrain from discussing Ozzie Guillen in this thread. He has been talked about ad nauseum this season and his tenure (both with the White Sox and Marlins) has proven to be a hot button issue. Beyond that, there are several other threads where he can be discussed. This trade and the after effects of it have literally nothing to do with Ozzie Guillen. Keep him out. -
I have no problem with people's thoughts on the MVP race - as I said earlier, there's no wrong answer - but as a general rule, the word "pesky" is not often used to describe a player with a .963 OPS.

Do APBTs show aggression toward siblings too? I know my sister's labs wrestle around with each other, but never with intent to injure. Primarily just curious.

I don't know their exact methodology, but they do have what appear to be roughly calculated statistics for fielding runs from that era. I'm not sure if they just use the same amount of runs or if they use rough scouting reports from the time, but that's where they get those numbers from. Still, I would use those numbers with confidence. Everything is compared to replacement level, so it's safe to assume that DiMaggio was worth more in 1941 than Mike Trout was from May through September, even if just by a small amount. It's hard to put into context how good Mike Trout was, but that's a pretty good start.
-
I actually think this could be a really good game. Keeping everything in context, I think these are two of the absolute best backup QBs in the league and they could both easily be starting somewhere.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 08:25 AM) CERA may help with that, since it focuses purely on the ERA of pitchers they are catching. And since most of the time, catchers don't come in with runners on base, ERA should be a pretty good metric. In 2012... AJ CERA: 4.08 TF CERA: 4.07 Of course, Flowers' numbers are a problem somewhat due to small sample size. But in general, it appears that the results during games they caught from their pitchers were very similar. Another question to ask with this may be, which pitchers did they tend to catch? Did one of them catch Sale and Peavy more often (relatively)? Did another one have to catch 1st half Humber or 2nd half Quintana more often? This is the biggest flaw with CERA, because it doesn't hold anything constant. If someone had time, the thing to do would be to compare the performances of common pitchers and compare the results, and even that isn't fail safe (due to strength of offenses and park factors). And even then, there's nothing objective about one being a better game caller than the other because some will prefer throwing to AJ, others to Flowers. What could be tracked would be the amount and types of pitches thrown to each catcher, which would give a basic idea of what type of pitches each catcher calls for.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 09:25 AM) I'm not so concerned about his running ability...it's more his willingness to try and make plays, whereas Smith is Mr Checkdown. When people have tried to make plays against the Bears this season, the Bears defense has scored touchdowns

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 09:46 AM) That's dumb because you shouldn't be comparing WAR that far apart in years. WAR is relative to what is considered a replacement level player in that current season. What was considered replacement level then is not what is considered replacement level now. I'm not 100% certain on this, but I don't think WAR transcends different eras like that. That is the entire point of WAR is so you can compare different eras and have some semblance of relativity. The problems will lie in the lack of defensive numbers (B-R uses hard statistics that tend to mislead while FanGraphs are determined by placement of batted balls which they have no data for from DiMaggio's era). I also don't know where that friend got the 8.6 number. From what I see, he's at 7.8 bWAR and 10.6 fWAR

10-1, 110 points this week, and not a single one of my skill players scored a touchdown this week (though Brees threw for a few). Difference this week? I had the Giants D on a bye, so I went for the best matchup D I could find - Rams D, because the Jets are terrible. With the lowest waiver priority in the league, I didn't get them. Next best matchup - a Redkins D against a rookie QB. 17 points

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 17, 2012 -> 09:57 AM) Lol, what the hell does any of that have to do with sabermetrics? QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 17, 2012 -> 12:19 PM) I think you just proved his point. I'd like to see the posts in question to see what exactly was being deemed sabermetrics. It's entirely possible, but there's no sabermetric stat that tracks "bad sliders" (though there are statistics that track pitch-type usage, which suggest that either Floyd doesn't throw a slider, or that his slider and cutter have been confused for 4 years now).

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 05:25 PM) Gmafb with your "he was worth 20 million last year" equation for WAR. Last year far exceeded any season he ever played in the majors and he didn't even play the position you want him to play because he was so bad and Lawrie isn't. EE isn't worth that paper. Bottom line. And I would be pissed if the Sox were the one buying high because of last year This was said about Bautista too. It's not an entirely impossible FB/HR to repeat or maintain, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up 30+ homers again next year. I don't think it's that bad of a contract.
