  1. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 01:28 PM) Coop will fix him WWDCD?
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 01:46 PM) Whatever happened to that page anyway? Last I saw, B Thompson had started it back up at WithLeather
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 08:22 AM) I can't see Humber back for $1million. They couldn't even use him in garbage time last year. You suppose he's going to follow Ozzie to the Royals...?
  4. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 09:43 AM) ISU/NDSU with a Valley championship on the line on Saturday....Go Birds! (No one cares). Really hard to move the ball on the NDSU defense, they are solid all around. The primary key is stopping the run because they have a couple of really good backs. If you can do that and get them in obvious pass downs, then you need to get a good pass rush on Jensen. He has a tendency to lock onto receivers and, while he's accurate and pretty conservative throwing the ball, he will make mistakes if you can force them. Also have to look out for the play action too. For what it's worth, I see NDSU winning it all again this year, but they are certainly a beatable team.
  5. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 07:27 AM) I don't think this applies to sports where most of our admiration applies to the athletes' merit, but FWIW in the field of media studies it is a pretty well regarded theory that years of movies and TV with the absence of non-whites was an alienating phenomenon for minorities. The idea isn't so much that minorities need their own "heroes" or genres (BET), but when people that look and act like you aren't given the treatment of the normal person, it is harder to drink the kool-aid of pop culture. I forget the name of the film, but because the black maid in the movie was given a somewhat developed character, the film really took off as far as black viewership -- most people look back and see that as confirmation of that theory. But...I don't think this applies to the Minnesota Timberwolves. I like Kirk Hinrich. Is it because he's white? Maybe. I love Derrick Rose. Is it in spite of his blackness? No...he's a great player and I actually think there's something really cool about him and part of it is the cultural blackness he has: the way he talks, etc. I think that's quite a bit different. In the entertainment industry, you may follow a person and enjoy the acting of a person, and their views and place in the world may be reflected based upon their race. In sports, you cheer for the jersey on the back. I wouldn't care if a guy on the White Sox had teal colored skin, I'm going to root for him to succeed, and if said teal colored player signs with the Tigers in the offseason, I'm going to root for him to fail. I also think, in sports, color of skin has less to do with players being idolized compared to their performance on the field due to the unscripted nature of it. Why is LeBron James more popular than Smush Parker? Why is LeBron James more popular than Jimmer Fredette? Because he's a superstar talent. Now, where the judgment of talent is far more subjective, you can say "why is Denzel Washington more popular than Brad Pitt?" and you may get arguments the other way. I'm sure there are people who like Denzel Washington because he is black. Honest to god, one of the reasons I like Donald Faison is because he is black, but a lot of the characters he plays are the "white black guy." And, as a general rule, I tend to watch shows geared toward a white audience as opposed to watching shows geared toward an African-American audience. But does that come into play during sports? I don't believe so.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2012 -> 02:32 PM) Something that hasn't happened in over 45 years is hard to overrate. If someone hit 25 triples next year, would we think twice about it?
  7. If you're going to keep digging, you might want a bigger shovel
  8. I had no idea Frank Thomas was black, otherwise I would have never cheered for him.
  9. Not that I suddenly think he's going to fall off the face of the planet, but it's worth pointing out... 2011 - 9.6% BB%, 19.3% K%, .297 BABIP 2012 - 6.5% BB%, 22.8% K%, .389 BABIP
  10. QUOTE (KG#1 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 02:08 PM) Yea, and you would've said the same thing last year if someone had said, "Lets trade Lillibridge and Stewart for Youkilis". Sometimes ridiculous trades happen. If someone posts a trade you don't think has a chance to happen, why don't you *gasp* ignore it. I would have said the same thing if it were suggested in the offseason. In season, given the situation the Red Sox were in, no, I wasn't surprised at all. I'm merely minding my own business over here. The idea of Chase Headley, Josh Hamilton, and Justin Upton in the same lineup is cool to think about but it's simply not realistic. I may have gone over the line stating it's a waste of space, but the odds of it happening are about the same as me winning the lottery. If you guys want to, keep proposing ridiculous trades. But, it's my right as an American and as a poster on this message board to shoot down an idea I think is ridiculous and absurd so long as I do it in a non-degrading manner, and I have done that.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 11:48 AM) it is. But you also lose most of the top 10 taker states in terms of federal aid. Absolutely. I don't think anything will come of it anyways. I think, regardless of Democrats, Republican, or potential 3rd party winners in future Presidential elections, that people signing petitions for secession will become perpetual and nothing will ever come of it (at least in our lifetime).
  12. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 11:00 AM) While I doubt it would be good if it happened (and let's be real, there's zero chance of that. The POTUS would have to go around and personally rape every wife in the land to stir up that much hate at this point), there couldn't be better states to lose, right? Texas would hurt the most, they actually contribute value to the country, even if none of it is cultural You lose your #1 and #2 oil producers in Texas and North Dakota. That's a pretty big hit.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) I really hope this is a lesson for other cities not to publicly fund these stadiums There have been multiple studies done that these stadiums never produce anything of value for the community itself and that they are a giganitic waste of taxpayer money.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 11:18 AM) That is pretty big dollars. Hopefully it stops them from getting any more pitching Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale Hunter gets 26 million over 2 years from #Tigers Good for him. Apparently winning is important to him, because I can't imagine any other reason why you'd want to play in Detroit.
  15. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 06:59 PM) It was a joke, because 3 straight people all said the same thing. I was following suit. And mine was a joke too
  16. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 10:28 PM) you mean like suggesting Reyes, Buerhle, Johnson, Buck + getting traded in the same deal. Sorry, that's actual news. It doesn't make it any more intelligent, but that actually happened. But Brent Morel, Leyson Septimo, and Dylan Axelrod for David Wright (or other ridiculous trade ideas) waste space.
  17. QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 07:28 PM) Holy crap it's a fan message board. The message board nazi is here to take away any fun! It's also meant for productive discussion. I see nothing unproductive about what he said. The trade proposals on this board ARE ridiculous.
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) Arizona wants Simmons for Upton. The Rangers were trying to trade for Simmons to get Upton, but Atlanta said no. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 02:03 PM) They tried to get Simmons so they could send him to Arizona for Upton. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 02:09 PM) I'm hearing rumors now that they may have been trying to get Simmons to flip for Upton. What a scoop
  19. QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 12:55 AM) You wonder if bringing in more super star types if it brings more fans out which allows us to go a little higher on pay roll They tried that in 2011. Reinsdorf and the board won't take that risk for a while.
  20. QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 12:42 AM) How about we also trade Beckham, de aza, quintana, and a minor leaguer for justin upton C flowers 1B konerko/dunn 2B sanchez 3B headley SS ramirez LF upton CF hamilton RF rios 1. Sale 2. Peavy 3. Danks 4. Liriano 5. Castro LHP veal, thorton, septimo RHP crain, axelrod, jones CP reed $79.75 million between Konerko, Dunn, Rios, Peavy, Crain, Ramirez, Thornton, and Danks. $89.5 million with Upton added. Add even say $6 million with Headley and that's up to $95+. You're going to add even $20 million a year with Hamilton and you're up to $115 million minus any other amenities and other re-signings. It's fun to dream and all, but that's just not realistic.
  21. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 12, 2012 -> 04:17 PM) You think the Bills will draft a new QB this year? I think they will draft A quarterback, I don't know if he will be the NEW quarterback. My money is actually on Vick, which is a band aid on a broken leg, but I think the Eagles will start over, they'll let go of Vick, and the Bills will bring him in (as they were interested in him when he was a free agent). He'll be his terrible, unaware, gunslinging self and they'll work their way to an 8-8 record, but at least they'd have a QB with an arm. I do think they'll draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round...someone like EJ Manuel or Landry Jones. I don't see Fitzpatrick as the biggest problem though. The receivers are OK, Spiller looks like a monster, and the OLine is solid, even if it continually breaks down. The biggest problem is the ineptitude of the defense. They're allowing the most points per game, 2nd most yards (behind the otherwise historically bad Saints defense), and the most rushing yards per game. With no rush defense, they can't defend the pass, and teams just gash them all the time. They really need an enforcer in the middle or an amendment to let them have 12 defenders on the field (or they need to quit switching between a 3-4 and a 4-3 and just stick with one and build within that).
  22. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 12, 2012 -> 08:26 PM) I lied in the last post, I'm done addressing his off the field issues though. My views on him are out there. I don't buy Rios as worthless and wouldnt net the Sox SOMETHING. His contract is not that bad. Also wheres the money AJ, Myers, and Youk going? The Sox can take on some salary. His contract wasn't that bad after 2010 either. Then 2011 happened, and he was immovable. Then 2012 happened and his contract wasn't that bad. I think he's going to be fine this year, but if the Sox can get value for him, they absolutely should.
