  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) With women I've seen it in mid-twenties to late 20's. It will happen sometime, then either you amp up the workouts or cut down the diet. I blew up early in my 20's after dedicating myself to the McD's monopoly game, but have leaned down now in my late 20's. Pretty sure I'm still working some of that stuff off and the only time I did it was 2 and a half years ago.
  2. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 02:13 PM) Gross. RACIST
  3. QUOTE (maggliopipe @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 03:36 PM) I'd rather Sale close than Thornton for largely contractual purposes. IIRC, Matty's deal is up after this season. If he excels as closer (as I expect he would), the cost of keeping him is going to skyrocket beyond what will already be the case. Keep him in that setup role and you've got a better chance of keeping him around beyond 2011. I can totally see them being reluctant to pull Sale from the role if he's successful though. Which would be a shame. He's going to cost a lot to retain no matter what. Downs got 3/$15 and Thornton is quite a bit better than Downs. I think Thornton is closer to a $7 million reliever on the open market...3/$20 to retain him. He's 34 this year, so a 3 year deal gets his ages 35-37 season...even if you pay him the same amount as Downs, I'm not sure he's worth that contract. If they could sign an extension with him for a pretty cheap number, that'd be great, but I wouldn't blame Thornton for wanting to cash in and I would be upset if the Sox committed a significant amount of money to him for the next 3 years.
  4. QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 03:26 PM) I can't say why exactly, but I feel entirely the same way. For me, it's because Thornton relies solely upon his fastball. It's arguably the best fastball in the entire game, but managers are generally saving their best fastball hitting bench players for the 9th inning because the closer usually has some pretty nasty stuff as well. If Thornton is faced with that on a consistent basis, I think he will be a bit vulnerable (I was going to say exposed, but if you haven't figured out Thornton's game plan by now, you may as well let me hit against him). I don't have any evidence of this, and the Thome ball is not a valid example (Thornton was in his 3rd inning of work, Thome is normally going to be in the lineup anyways), it's just a gut feeling with some perhaps flawed reasoning behind it. Again, I think he'll be fine, I'd just prefer it to be Sale.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 02:48 PM) Do you have any idea how bad CQ was in RF? Smallz from the Sandlot wouldn't have been any worse. Unless you're prime Manny Ramirez with the bat, you have negative value overall when you're that horrendous defensively. Manny never actually put up a UZR as bad as Quentin did last year.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 03:00 PM) Yeah, I was kinda puzzled by all the people agreeing with the move at the start of this thread. He either should be the closer or he should start the season as a starter. Kinda makes the money on Ohman seem more excessive. I don't think so. Ozzie is going to want 2 lefties aside from his closer, and the odds are very, very good that one of Thornton and Sale is closing - I'd say around 98% that one of those two closes. And, for $1.5 mill this year and $2.5 mill next year, I'd rather have a 2nd (3rd) lefty that actually has pretty good stuff opposed to the s*** they've been throwing out there.
  7. Yeah, OK. The Sox have 5 good starters, even if one is a question mark at this point, and setting a role for Sale is a good thing. If they leave him in the bullpen next year, THEN you have a legitimate beef.
  8. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 02:56 PM) AJ looks like he gained about 40 pounds around the waist. Kinda does. I think his jersey is just unbuttoned though.
  9. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 11:50 AM) Yep. Me too. I don't need role players to be two way stars. Quentin is a run producer and a good one. Whatever he costs the team in RF he likely more than makes up for it at the plate. Both FGs and B-R say that this is not the case.
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 12:55 PM) Maybe, I was thinking if we had a forum we could do workout of the month posts and whatnot, make it more community oriented. No big deal. This would be awesome. Just hit week 5 of 12 of that workout regiment I posted earlier, and it's starting to intensify quite a bit. I mentioned the Spartacus Workout to my bro-in-law and I think we'll probably do that after this is over.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 02:23 PM) The one that amazed me was SI not having the Sox on the cover. There really is nothing more important than Colts-Patriots though.
  12. For some reason, Thornton scares me as the closer. I think he'd do fine, but I also think that Sale would be a better option. Better all around stuff, and it keeps Thornton in the role in which he has been the best.
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 16, 2011 -> 11:20 PM) Wow, I'm surprised. Didn't think he'd get that many years. Yeah that's a guy I think you wait to extend big. So much of his value was due to a ridiculously high HR/FB that some regression is due. I mean, I genuinely believe that Jose Bautista is a 30+ homer hitter, but I think you want to see him do it again before extending him. I also don't understand the projections for his average being as high as they are. They are projecting 15 fewer HR, the same amount of XBH, and roughly the same amount of K's, and he's going to hit for a similar average? I don't see it. I see him putting up lines similar to Dunn - .240/.350/.500. Great power, good ability to get on base, not so much with regards to the average. Perhaps I'm the one wrong here.
  14. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 01:26 AM) We were all psyched that Beckham would rake in 2010 and start to really develop, although I do remember some mentioning a possible sophmore slump. GO SOX!!! Beckham through his first 260 PAs: .199/.270/.251/.521 Beckham in his final 238 PAs: .310/.369/.516/.885 There's reason for optimism.
  15. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 16, 2011 -> 07:57 PM) To be fair, outside of May, Rios was pretty ordinary. I expect more from him considering his skill-set. You are correct in this, but pretty ordinary offensively and good defensively was a big upgrade for the White Sox in CF and, really, is still pretty valuable overall, and then you do have to factor in that monstrosity of a May. Nobody is b****ing about Rios this winter. Several people have even indicated that they want him hitting 3rd. I think that's wrong, but to suggest that Rios is in anything but good graces is wrong.
  16. QUOTE (G&T @ Feb 16, 2011 -> 09:11 PM) This is a big deal in my home. My wife freaks about expirations and I dont care. If it doesn't smell or look funky it's fine. This is generally true, although with most fresh meats, I will only let it go for a week unthawed before I toss it. I heard that the best test for that is to actually give some to a cat and if the cat doesn't eat it, it's long past gone. Cats are apparently capable of smelling rotting bacteria. I have definitely eaten eggs that were like a month and a half past the sell-by date (which I know isn't an expiration, but you only have like 2 weeks after that to eat them, or so they say), and I was just fine. With food, it's all a matter of knowing what to look for with regards to expired food.
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 16, 2011 -> 01:44 PM) Google "Spartacus Workout PDF" That looks awesome. Another pet peeve of mine is that we don't have the workout forum anymore. It's like, just when I start working out, it shuts down (and yes, I realize it's been shutdown for a while now).
  18. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 16, 2011 -> 12:32 PM) Yeah, that .684 OPS he posted in 2010 post All-Star Break really silenced all the critics. The .878 OPS in the first half sure did. And considering he's an .807 career hitter in the first half, and a .740 in the second half, it didn't exactly come out of left field (it came out of center field!)
  19. Last I saw, he was sitting around 88-91 with his velocity, which is obviously good less than a year removed from Tommy John, but that's only velocity. We have no idea what kind of movement he can get on pitches yet, nor do we know how his command is yet. It's probably going to take a while for those to come back too. I realize there's a month and a half before the season starts, but I'm not sure the Twins should really be counting on anything from Nathan this year.
  20. That is definitely a situation Williams and company should be monitoring. Joba seems to quickly be wearing thin on Yankees management with the struggles last year as well as the weight this year. And if there is one organization who can help fix talented, overweight relievers with drinking problems, it's the White Sox.
  21. If the latest information is even close to true, and the Cards were only offering $19-21 million, Pujols should break off negotiations. That is an absolute bush league offer, relatively speaking of course. You are talking about one of the very best hitters we've ever seen, he should be, at the very least, among the top 2-3 highest paid players in the game.
  22. Alex Rios was a huge, huge POS last offseason. OMG he has had a bad month in September, why would they give so much money to such an awful player. Looks kind of silly now.
  23. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 16, 2011 -> 08:47 AM) Then he's already made the roster... Well, if you believe that, then so have Humber, Infante, Marquez, Flowers, Lillibridge, De Aza, and Gartrell.
  24. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 09:33 PM) Will win 105 games if all this comes to fruition. Oh, and being skeptical about PK is more than fair. Look at his 2007-2009 numbers and it's easy to doubt if he can repeat his '10 at age 35. You just don't see many 35-year old non-DHs sport .900+ OPSs. You don't see many 35 year olds putting up .900+ OPSs whether or not they are DHing.
