To use a very cliche'd phrase, this is what happens when you put a lot of good players together but you don't put a good team together. It just seems that all 3 of those guys want their minutes and want to run the team, and they simply can't handle it. These guys need specific roles on the team and late in games they look like chickens with their heads cut off. At some point, you really have to look at the coach and wonder if he is a strong enough voice and respected enough to command that team to a deep playoff run.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 3, 2011 -> 07:44 PM) Disagree. Viciedo makes this 2011 team better, therefor, we should mortgage the future. But by how much? And at what cost? In the perfect world, Viciedo is probably worth 1-1.5 WAR to the club through adequate defense and a good bat, but with limited plate appearances. In the same perfect world, Chris Sale is worth 1.5-2 WAR and contributes a ton towards WPA. Meanwhile, the replacement for Viciedo can still add 0.5-1.5 WAR off the bench, perhaps through defense or equal offensive output, while the replacement for Chris Sale is worth 0-0.5 WAR (because who in the organization can even compare to Sale?) The different in the replacement value results in it making a ton of sense for Chris Sale to be in the bullpen while Viciedo refines his game in the minors while remaining the first called up if one of the big boys goes down for an extended period of time. I know you won't agree nor take this into consideration, but it's worth mentioning anyways.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 3, 2011 -> 05:40 PM) Damn, Dayan is really pushing to make the team as the 4th OF, although I think I'd rather have him playing full time in AAA. Then again, if we are "ALL IN" and willing to stunt Sale's growth to benefit 2011, then we may as well bring Viciedo as our 4th OF. Glad you were able to bring this up again. I think you realize how absurd the comparison is. Chris Sale is ready to contribute a significant amount to the major league club. Dayan Viciedo is not. Viciedo is also much more unrefined compared to Sale, and thus letting him play full time will be much better for him than coming off the bench.

QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Mar 3, 2011 -> 01:18 PM) -Plenty of people love the notion that it is about who you know and not exactly what you know to get the job. This is more true than you may want to believe. This is the reason for scholastic organizations, job fairs, and networking sessions. To get to a high level within the real world, no matter your profession, you really need to know people and to have their trust. Sure, some of it will be proving what you know, but when you get to a certain level of the professional world, when comparing two equal candidates, the one who is more well known within the company by anybody - whether it through a connection of another company or within the company itself - is going to get that job. I can tell you one thing, I am dealing with it right now. I am more than qualified for an entry level job in the business world, but because I really don't have any good connections, I have struggled getting a job to the point where I am just looking for any job because I need money. If I planned on being in Bismarck for longer than 6 months, there would be several professional organizations I would try to get involved in. However, I don't plan on being in Bismarck long, so at this point it's getting a job that has some intrinsic value (looking at being a server at a restaurant, where I will at least be able to get some type of customer service experience on my resume, though I have several other outstanding applications to businesses around the area) so I can have at least some money when I do eventually move away.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 3, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) I know quite a few people who picked up hitting lefty because it helped with their mechanics. They were able to teach their body the correct way to swing from the left side and it would either be a fresh break from the wrong mechanics from the right side or would help them get over bad mechanics. Yeah there are lots of reasons someone would be hitting left handed. Considering his hand-eye coordination, it really shouldn't surprise anyone that Alexei is hitting left handed, and considering his overall talent level, it shouldn't surprise you that he's hitting well (I would assume that is relative to what one would expect). Hitting in a manner in which you are not comfortable like that forces you to slow down and think about every step of the process. You do it a few times until he becomes a bit of a habit, and then you take it to the other side of the plate. -
Farley: Hey Joe, y-you remember that t-time when y-you hit that home run? Against Cleveland? Joe: Yeah Farley: That was awesome

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 3, 2011 -> 01:22 AM) So.....can I Sox add Millledge to the 25-man roster (to fulfill the signing), and then immediately send him down to AAA? Or can they just give him the contract, but have him start in AAA anyway? It's a minor league contract. He will be assigned to the minors if he doesn't make the roster. For him to be added to the 25-man roster, he also had to be added to the 40-man. I have no idea what his option situation is right now, but I imagine he is out of options, so if the Sox were to add him and then drop him, he'd have to be exposed to waivers to be sent down. There may be an out-clause in his contract that if he isn't on the 25-man by some point in the season he can ask for his release, but with someone that young and unproven, I really tend to doubt it.

QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Mar 2, 2011 -> 11:40 PM) I don't see the appeal with "Hot Fire". Seems cliched. I do like demorelizer the best out of my drunk creations. But I'm drunk again so let's see what I can conjure up. I still think too much emphasis is put on the name though. I've noticed Morel looks like he's about 45 years old. I suggest the name "Old Balls" because he looks old and baseball is played with a ball. It just makes sense to me. Or maybe even "Gold Balls" because he could win a gold glove someday Stop while you're ahead

They avoid the $10 million hit and then (reportedly) resign him to a 5 year deal. Win-win for both sides I suppose.

I actually think quite a few people really dislike Tom Brady.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 2, 2011 -> 06:40 PM) is there some kind of roster bonus or something to justify that? He was due like $10 mill this year, and he has never been much a rush linebacker. In a 3-4 defense, those types of players can be found pretty easily.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Mar 2, 2011 -> 03:56 PM) AJ yelling a loud f*** on his RBI groundout.. AJ got a speeding ticket on the way to the game, officer said: Too bad Im a Cubs fan I knew about the speeding ticket, but the officer was a Cubs fan? Then Pierzynski should have said "You should let me go so I can take out some Reds players considering the Cubs are going to be playing them a hell of a lot more than us"

I would guess that if McPherson were hypothetically able to play a full season, he would hit about .200 with 25 home runs and an OPS around .700, and that's a pretty big "if," as I recall him having several back problems throughout his career. I have no idea how his defense is, but I can't imagine that it's very good. He doesn't have good contact skills whatsoever and has struggled mightily when he has played in the majors. He has legitimate power and can draw a walk every now and then, but counting on him to be anything more than the backup to the backup is asking for trouble.

Uribe gunning out Orlando Palmeiro is it. Everything considered - my interest in it, the storylines behind it, the sheer brilliance of it, and whatever else you can think of - it is almost certainly going to go down as the top sports moment in my life. (until the White Sox sign me in 3 years after they see me playing a pickup game of baseball and realize how amazing my skills are, and I then go on to win 3 MVPs and hit 2 walk off World Series winning home runs)

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 2, 2011 -> 08:06 AM) We (FS) had Rienzo in a tie at 11th, just outside the top 10. I really like what I have seen of him thus far - which is numbers and I think a scouting report that said he had pretty good velocity - so I am a little excited to see how he throws this year.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 2, 2011 -> 10:56 AM) How did I not figure that out? Because subconsciously you forgot that Peavy's first name was Jake since nobody refers to him by his first name anywhere (even though it is in the thread title...I read it as "Peavy Thread"). It's almost always Peavy and every now and then it's JFP. Atleast, that is why I didn't get it.

I'm just kind of doing it as a supplemental workout right now because doing the entire P90X along with our other workout would be absolute murder. Still, I don't think my abs have been that sore since freshman year of high school, and that was an hour long ab workout.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Mar 1, 2011 -> 10:32 PM) Great thread, some interesting names on the list. There are some people/publications super high on Addison Reed. I noticed the same thing about Jacob Petricka. SSS was the only one with Andre Rienzo.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 1, 2011 -> 06:00 PM) Didn't they do a Major League 3 already? It was awful, but I'm pretty sure they did. Yes, Major League 3: Back to the Minors. It was absolutely awful and anybody who forgets about it and/or doesn't count it amongst the Major League series is doing the right thing. It involved the Twins and the Buzz and the minor league team eventually beats the MLB team. It was just absolutely f***ing awful. And yes, I did know that they were thinking of Major League 3, as qwerty posted about it a while back. I was more referencing that I wish he would channel Rick Vaughn, who I believe is actually less crazy than Charlie Sheen is currently.
