    2011 TV Thread

Tried watching SNL because Zach Galifianakis was hosting. Didn't make it through much. I'm sure there were some good bits, but it's just absolutely awful. In a TV setting, if you have to explain your jokes (or if you explain them anyways even though they are obvious and not funny anyways), it's not funny. I'm no comedian, but subtlety is huge, SNL is about as subtle as a white out blizzard.
  2. Not sure if this was posted, but it's a great read no matter what. Peavy had a hell of an offseason. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2011/n...tory?id=6182437
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 13, 2011 -> 01:04 PM) Simple question; has Brent hit well enough to earn the job? He hit .323 for the full minor league year last year, so the answer to your question is yes. I'm not going to let 21 or 25 or 50 plate appearances in Arizona before stats actually count take precedent over 527 plate appearances in the minor leagues last year. Now, if he is taking his struggles at the plate onto the field with him and it hurts him there, then you have a legitimate reason. Or if he's banged up, or if they do feel as though he needs more seasoning, then those make sense. You can't take anything from numbers in Spring Training.
  4. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 13, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) Could someone point me in the direction of a good beginner workout plan for someone looking to put on weight/muscle? Thanks you. Would something like p90x be good for this? The biggest thing for me has simply been getting into the gym or doing some type of lifting in general (whether that is with actual weights or using your body weight). That isn't in the cards for everybody though, and it becomes especially hard when you have to go to the gym by yourself. From what I have seen of P90X and Insanity, they are very difficult workouts but beginners can handle them. Push yourself but don't push so hard that you hurt yourself. I have been lifting for a little over 8 weeks now, have been eating a little better, and have two whey protein shakes daily, and I have added a ton of muscle already (my shoulders have gotten really big considering where they were). It's relatively easy to add the muscle, it's harder to keep it because you have to keep working out.
  5. I actually think it makes more sense to bring Humber than Infante. If you bring Infante, it puts him into the 6th inning, close game, backup setup guy type of role - not the swingman, not the most important reliever, but he would appear in high leverage situations. That is something he should be eased into. Meanwhile, that would also leave Pena in the long relief role, and that's a spot where he got absolutely hammered last year. Instead, you can put Pena back in that role, where he has had some success before, and you can have Humber throw the low leverage innings. Really, it's basically the proper allocation of resources. The Sox are paying Tony Pena ~$2 mill, so it makes sense to try and maximize that value by putting him into some more important situations rather than letting him throw garbage innings. Meanwhile, they are paying both Infante and Humber ~$400k, so it would make more sense to have them pitch the garbage innings. Humber is better suited for that role than Infante is.
  6. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 13, 2011 -> 01:57 AM) Pushing Morel? Ok, but not if it means he is just overwhelmed with pressure. If you can't handle pressure in Spring Training, then how the f*** are you going to be expected to be a main piece on a contending team? If he can't handle this, he deserves to be sent down.
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 04:07 PM) I have just read the stupidest paragraph written since writing was developed. Literally every sentence in this paragraph is stupid. I don't know where to start. Stupid is one thing, but a lot of this is flat out wrong or impossible. -Do commercials to bring in extra money for yourself? The 1% of the league that CAN do this, DOES do this. Brendon Ayanbadejo isn't going to sell many jerseys. -College degrees? I don't have the exact percentage, but quite a few of these athletes leave school early so they can get their payday right away. And having seen what athletes do just on a D-IAA school, where their odds at making it to the NFL or the UFL or AFL2 is microscopic, quite a few of them still don't do anything scholastically. I mean nothing insensitive by this next comment to anyone, but reading it seriously reminds me of what a white southern person would have said about blacks in about 1840. It's just absurd.
  8. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 02:56 PM) Buddy Bell is on with Farmer. Just said Mitchell is going to Winston-Salem. That's a little faster than I thought they were going to go, but should still be slow enough that he'll be able to succeed. This doesn't surprise me as the Sox have generally been pretty aggressive with their prospects, whether Bell has been there or not.
  9. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 11:24 AM) I woke up this morning and the bottom of my MacBook is warped. Boo. That's what you get for owning a Mac
  10. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 12:09 AM) Don't get the Jimmer love. The guy has short Adam Morrison written all over him if you ask me. I think he's a better player than Morrison, especially a better shooter, but I understand the comparison.
  11. QUOTE (joeynach @ Mar 12, 2011 -> 02:03 AM) Just think how good the White Sox pen would be if they actually added an all star closer to this pen. If they actually got Rafael Soriano or traded for a Health Bell. Wow that would have made the best bullpen I have ever seen. Then they would be down several resources that they either don't have or will need. And had that happened, Sale wouldn't be in the bullpen (which wouldn't have been bad, but is beside the point), so the bullpen would be about the same going into the season anyways.
  12. From what I have seen from the Illini this year, it might almost be better for them to somehow miss the tournament. That team needs some kind of shake up. There were like 4-5 games I watched this year where it was close at the end and they blew every single one of them, and I don't watch a lot of college basketball, so I'm sure there were more of them too. If they make it, what are they gonna do, blow it in the 1st or 2nd round? You pretty much have to move on from Weber at this point.
  13. The Rangers also have the pitching depth to make a move like that. The White Sox don't and are also facing two expiring contracts in the rotation.
  14. Hmm, didn't know that Erik Spoelstra coached the Illinois offense too.
  15. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Mar 11, 2011 -> 09:58 AM) I am rooting for Morel but forgive me, this situation sadly reminds me of the BA debacle and I hope it turns out differently but.... Just like BA, he's got the job basically locked in ST (we have no other real everyday options), he's a rookie batting ninth and Ozzie will tell the press he doesn't need to do anything but play good defense and not worry about his bat...sound familiar? Sorry just bringing back bad memories Brent Morel has hit much better than Brian Anderson did in the minors and has a much better work ethic. I can eat an orange, and it may remind me of an apple, but it's still an orange.
  16. QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 10, 2011 -> 09:34 PM) Me too...I've been going back and listening to each album for a week or so at a time...just absolute brilliance. Oh I agree. I think Yield is probably my favorite but really it's hard to say any of them are your favorite. Ten is amazing too. Wasn't a huge fan of their self-titled, but it's OK. Love Backspacer. (hasn't listened to Pearl Jam in a while)
  17. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Mar 10, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) What exactly does an XLR file open in. Looks like Microsoft Works
  18. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 10, 2011 -> 04:47 PM) I like Humber and Lindsay so far, although Humber probably needs to be starting in AAA. I could certainly see him making the team as the long-man out of the pen considering Cooper apparently likes him, he can spot start, has the durability to pitch multiple innings, and has come out of the bullpen before. But that's more of a testament to his versatility as a pitcher than it is about his talent level. Humber really doesn't NEED to do anything in the sense that you are talking about. He's a 28 year old pitcher who has thrown 51.1 innings in the majors, put up a 5.26 ERA in those 51.1 innings, and has a career ERA of 4.48 in the minor leagues. Pitchers like Phillip Humber are the reason the term "just some guy" was created. In the absolute best case scenario for the 2011 season, he is DJ Carrasco - a great pitcher in low leverage spots who can save the bullpen and maybe give a starter a day off here or there. In the worst case scenario for Humber, he's released at some point during the year.
  19. Or maybe you can just have Beckham lead off.
  20. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Mar 10, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) I'd have to agree that baseball is most likely what is best for him. When you are having problems the way that he seems to be, having a ton of free time is the absolute worst possible thing. People who are receiving a ton of counseling, including some sort of rehab, aren't going to have a lot of free time.
  21. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Mar 10, 2011 -> 12:13 AM) With that being said, maybe baseball isn't where he needs to be right now. I would say it is definitely not. He is not right in the head at the moment.
  22. I lied, it was his shoulder last year, but it was just stiffness. It seems he's throwing well enough, so he could have just as easily slept on it wrong and at that point in the year there's no point in throwing him out there. He did have hip soreness at the end of 2009 and they let it heal on its own. Here's his motion for anyone who can't remember or who hasn't seen it from the front...
  23. Flowers will have to hit to have any trade value whatsoever. My guess would be that Flowers plays out the year in Charlotte and acts as the 3rd catcher in case of injury, becomes the backup next year, playing a bit more progressively throughout the year (assuming he's performing at all), and then taking over the full-time job in 2013 or with the Sox finding a different catcher in the offseason and simply getting rid of Flowers.
